    INTRODUCTION

Chi Alpha Campus Ministries believes the best way to impact a campus is to

establish a community of students on campus who love God, one another, and arecommitted to the task of sharing Christ with other students and faculty. Following thebiblical pattern in the Book of Acts, we strive to build communities of worship, fellowship, discipleship, witness and prayer. By community we mean that a gatheredpeople on campus is more visible and effective than a few isolated individuals.

By community of worship we mean that as a gathered people of God oncampus, we must establish ministry to God as the highest call of Christians. Weseek to embody the following principles:

    A. We recognize we were created by and are now reconciled to God to

    bring glory to Him (Isaiah 43:7; Ephesians 1:11-12);

    B. As Christs family gathered, we become the dwelling place of God for thevery purposes of ministry to Him as His priests, and for proclamation ofHis greatness to the world (Ephesians 1:10-22; 1 Peter 2:4-10);

    C. We believe the presence of God is made more real among people whenbelievers worship (Psalm 22:3).

Secondly, Chi Alpha expresses ministry to God by:

    A. Directing adoration to His person in giving thanks for His acts of lovingkindness toward us (Psalm 100; 150);

    B. Learning to sit at His feet like Mary and respond to Him (Luke 10:39;John 10:4-5);

    C. Allowing the spiritual gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12-14 to flow through usto the Lord;

    D. Learning to worship Him with our actions (1 Corinthians 10:31; Hebrews13:15-16).

As a community of worship, we expect other ministries to grow best whennurtured in an atmosphere of ministry to the Lord.

It is our desire and vision to see God raise up teams of students that can worktogether in leading His people into His presence through praise and worship. We areexcited about coming together to worship our Lord Jesus Christ and we are excitedabout YOU being a part of this ministry.

Come with a song in your heart.

Have your mind and heart SET to minister tothe Lord.

    order to minister to God.

    1) Work at it.

    2) Personalize your worship.

    3) Ask God to help you.

    D. Participate! See 1 Corinthians 14:26 and note theprinciple: All should participate! BUT . . .

    problems arise sometimes because

    1) some people come to the meetingenergized.

    2) some come neutralized - they need to gettheir attention back on the Lord.

    3) some come vandalized - we may need togive them time to repent and confess beforeGod. We may need to encourage those whoare downtrodden or discouraged.

    E. Continue to be Filled with the Holy Spirit! See Ephesians 5:18-20.

Worship Training Guide - page 3

When we assemble in the name of the Lord, He is with us. Our objective is tomove to the point at which every believer will have seen the Lord, ministered to Him,and have been transformed upon seeing God. The least effective way to arrive at this

point is to have a poorly led, insincere, flippant, sing your favorite song type ofmeeting.

The key is to prayerfully develop leadership with some Scripture songs, choruses, Scripture readings, etc., already chosen, but with a willingness to changedirections, allow for spontaneous worship after a song or periods of silence, to becreative in leading the people into different forms of worship (standing, clapping, shouting, etc.) or know when it is time to hear from the Lord in the ministry of spiritualgifts.

Worship leaders need to be sensitive to special things God may want to do

among the gathered believers. He might want one worship service to be a time ofcelebration, and another to be an emphasis on His Holiness. The Holy Spirit may alsodirect the leader to guide the meeting in a particular direction during the worship time.

Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God! Be encouraged that as youminister to God and call others to do the same, He will make His presence more realamong us.

    VII. HOW DO WE WORSHIP?

It is expected that the group will structure a significant part of the large group

meeting for interaction with God in worship, including such elements as music, public reading of Scripture, and time for spontaneous worship and/or prayer.

Instruction should be given regarding the nature of God; biblical principles and

models of worship; and the role and significance of spiritual gifts. Both

orchestrated and spontaneous worship should occur under the oversight of theleadership. Worship will be experimental and innovative as the group finds itscomfortable norm. Finally, the leadership will expose the group to known andproven leaders (and even rookies who are learning to lead) who are gifted andable to direct meaningful worship in keeping with biblical norms.

    A. John 4:23-24 states we must worship God in spirit and in truth.

    1. In spirit means genuinely, from our hearts (and not just anoutward form), with the help of the Holy Spirit.

    2. In truth means worship from a pure heart on the basis of whoGod is as revealed in His Word.

    3. Remember that worship involves seeing and responding.

    4. We need to look to the Bible, not just our culture, tradition, andhistory for appropriate models and expressions of worship.

    VIII.HOW TO LEAD IN WORSHIP

    A. The best worship leader is a good worshiper. Set an example.

    B. Remember your purpose - to direct peoples attention away from

    themselves and toward the Lord.

    1. Be a teacher...what significance can be drawn from worship?

    2. How does Scripture call us to worship?

    3. Model brokenness, transparency, victory, and authenticity.

    4. Call the students to actively participate

    C. Be prepared to lead , but allow for the Holy Spirit to interrupt.

    1. Be focused...lead clearly and effectively

Worship Training Guide - page 14

    2. Know the difference between leading songs and leading worship.

    3. You and the team will initially set the pace.

    4. Explain what we do and why in worship. Call people forward.

    D. Reduce noise

    1. Distractions in the meeting area?

    2. Its ok to be silent between songs, but nurture the believers indifferent worship experiences...and you must lead.

    3. Be attentive to the flow of worship. Is there someone drawing

attention to themselves by singing too loudly?

    4. Avoid center stage...reduce attention getters on the team.

    5. Make sure the songs are picked out beforehand; the personworking the overhead machine knows what to do; the songs arereadable; the instruments are tuned;

    6. Develop signs to communicate to the worship team members - becautious in leading worship just with verbal commands.

    7. Be aware of who your neighbors are.

    E. Determine a worship theme that is pertinent to what God is doing (orwants to do) in the large group meeting.

    1. One aspect of Gods nature (e.g., His love, His holiness, Hispower) is often an appropriate theme for worship.

    2. Many times a particular Scripture verse in the call to worship willserve to focus peoples attention on the theme for the meeting.Read Scripture with that thought in mind.

    3. Its better to have a theme and let the Holy Spirit change it than tohave no theme and just float through the service.

    4. Train the worship team to pray together and ascertain the themetogether. Where do you need to lead the students? How can youtie worship and the teaching of the Bible together?

  • 7/29/2019 Worship Seminar

    17/27

Worship Training Guide - page 15

    F. Decide which elements of worship you will include in your order ofservice. Choose those which are in keeping with your theme.

    1. Elements you should always include:

    a. Call to worship

    b. Corporate prayer

    c. Scripture reading

    d. Direct adoration of God

    e. Benediction

    2. Optional elements:

    a. Testimony

    b. Small group interaction and/or prayer

    c. Offering

    d. Special presentations, e.g., music, drama

    e. Announcements

    f. Introduction of visitors

    G. Write out your worship plan (see samples at end of the Guide)

    1. Avoid fill in the blank services, but dont be afraid of patterns.

    2. Order the songs in such a way that they flow naturally from one toanother and have a uniform direction.

    3. Be very aware of Who the songs are addressed to.

    4. Be aware of the keys in which the songs will be sung - learn to linksongs in the same key and of the same theme. Also, realize thatupward key modulations can direct people upward and further in.

    H. Pray like crazy.

  • 7/29/2019 Worship Seminar

    18/27

Worship Training Guide - page 16

    1. Be open to changes that God may direct you in before the servicebegins (or even during).

    2. Meet early with the worship team to go over the worship plan andto wait on God together. Pray with the worship team. Pray forGods blessing on the meeting.

    I. Lead the time of worship with one eye focused on God and one eye

    focused on the people.

    1. Your purpose is to help people be good worshipers, so preparethem to be involved. Watch how theyre doing. Call them toparticipate. Call them to break out of the fear of what people thinkand flow with what God is doing. Encourage them to be open to be

used in a gift of the Holy Spirit. Sound a clear call to battle.

    2. Remember, effective leading consists of a balance betweentalking and remaining quiet - whichever is necessary to helppeople focus on the Lord.

    3. Speak with confidence when you have something to say...as onespeaking the very words of God.

    4. Listen carefully to what God is saying. Ask God to make all of yousensitive to what He wants to do. Let His creativity flow.

    5. Enjoy His presence just as much as everyone else. Sing heartily, concentrating on the meaning of the words.

    6. Remember you are only the donkey, not the King!

    IX. BUILDING A TEAM

    A. Choosing a Team

    1. Look for faithful servants, not just people who want to be up front.

    2. Dont just look for musical talent...its needed, but youre lookingfor people who want to part of a team that will minister to God. Prayfor worshipers to be raised up.

  • 7/29/2019 Worship Seminar

    19/27

Worship Training Guide - page 17

    3. Set discipleship goals for students who want to be a part of theworship team. Basic priorities for a man or woman of worship:

    (a) A life of prayer - Proverbs 15:8;

    (b) Stay in the Word - John 6:68;

    (c) A life of integrity - Psalm 15:1-2.

    4. Announce to the students your desire to recruit and train a team.

    B. Equipping a Team

    1. Use the small group format. This is a great place to model and

train future worship leaders. There is freedom to exercise the giftsof the Spirit in a non-threatening environment.

    2. Work yourself out of a job by modeling, training, and releasing.

    3. Meet with your team for prayer and ministry to the Lord before yourscheduled worship time. Use this devotion time to begin to selectsongs, Scriptures, etc. with the team members.

    4. Have consistent practice times that focus on a balance of spiritual, technical, and practical preparation.

    5. Train more than 1 worship leader and more than 1 team. Theworship leader(s) have a priestly ministry of leading the peopleinto the presence of God and discerning His purpose for the publicgathering. Realize they will be a target for the enemy.

    C. Preparation

    1. Pass out a copy of the Worship Training Guide to each studentand ask them to go through the material with you in a day longseminar. Then set a date for the training.

    2. Develop a master list of transparencies and a song list that you willbe proficient in leading. Make a copy of the song list for each teammember.

    3. Consecrate the meeting to the Lord. Pray over and rebuke anydemons hanging around or in the sound system.

  • 7/29/2019 Worship Seminar

    20/27

Worship Training Guide - page 18

    4. Maintain a balance between planning and spontaneity.

    5. Sing a new song to the Lord. Consider teaching a new song at the

beginning of a meeting. Go over it a few times to learn it...then itcan come from the heart when you get to it in the meeting.

    X. SAMPLE CALLS TO WORSHIP

    B i b l i c a l Reas on s f o r Wo r s h i p

    A. We are commanded to worship God. The first two of the TenCommandments reflect Gods desire for us to worship Him and Him only. Inaddition, many psalms and other Scripture passages call us to worship Him.

Need we think, therefore, that God is dependent on our worship--that His senseof self-worth is increased when we adore Him? Not at all! When He is glorified, itis for our good.

    B. God is worthy of al l the adoration we can give Him. He existseternally one God in three Persons--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is theCreator uncreated--Creator of all that is and ruler over all creation. He, in Hisinfinite majesty, is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. He, in His perfectcharacter, is absolutely holy, good, loving, faithful, merciful, and just. He is pureSpirit--the Source of all light, life, and love. He, though pure Spirit, in the realityof His personality makes possible the self-conscious person hood of men

(Because He thinks, reasons, speaks, chooses, feels, plans, loves, hates, creates, and destroys, so can we). He became flesh and dwelt among us, to live, die, and rise for us, and to give us eternal life.

What response other than awed worship is possible to such a God! It is best forHis creation that He be exalted above all else. When He is not, chaos andanarchy result.

    C. God created us to be worshipers. The sin of Adam, however, manifested itself immediately by making him afraid of God. Moreover, the firstproblem God had with man after the expulsion from the Garden dealt with

worship: Abels worship was acceptable to God, Cains was not; so, Cainmurdered Abel. When we realize that God searched for and worked to create apeople of true praise (Israel) for the ages, but to no avail because of manshardness of heart, what Jesus said to the Samaritan woman takes on a certainpoignancy: God still seeks true worshipers. And because we were created to beworshipers, we will never be fulfilled until we truly worship.

    D. God saved us to be worshipers. Far from giving up the search, Goddid create a people to be true worshipers. Jesus declared to the woman thetime . . . has now come. Jesus himself was the first absolutely true worshiper--

the first of a race of new people characterized by worship in spirit and truth.Through His death, He reconciled us to His Father so that those who once couldnever be made perfect so as to freely draw near to God in worship, are nowcommanded to draw near with confidence (Hebrews 10:1-25). By being in Him,they come to Him in spirit and truth. These are they who have been chosen, redeemed, and sealed with the Spirit to the praise of His glory (Ephesians 1:3-14). They have become a dwelling place for God (Ephesians 2:22), to be ahousehold of priests to offer up the sacrifice of praise (1 Peter 2:5,9; Hebrews12:15). Thus, God has created a kind of new Eden--the Church-- a place ofpraise to Him and fellowship with Him.

    E. Proper worship is the foundation of all other ministry. Worshipis the highest, the ultimate call of the Church. When we adore God in trueworship, all other ministries will grow. When we praise in Spirit and in truth, wewill be obedient disciples in everything. When we love Him with heartsoverflowing with praise, we will love one another deeply. As we learn to worshipthe Lord of the harvest, we will soon be begging Him to make us evangelists. And as unbelievers come among us, they will want to know the God we love somuch.

    F. True worshipers are continually renewed in the Lord. Psalm22:3 tells us that God inhabits the praises of His people, Israel (we are spiritual

Israel). This does not mean that God magically appears on the scene when webegin to praise Him--like the genie appeared when Aladdin rubbed his lamp!God is already with us anyway. It means that when we worship God, ourattention is turned to Him. We become aware of His presence. He revealshimself to us. He is exalted among us and takes His proper place in hearts andminds. When God is so revealed to us, we are renewed! Revived! Continuedworship is a key to continued renewal.

    G. Other Sample Calls:

    1. Use Scripture Readings to Announce the theme of worship (you

could use the worship team members to read along with you, or, you couldinvolve the people in the audience to read Scripture, or even have a responsivereading).

    2. Use stories from Scripture (or other sources) to illustrate the needand importance of worship, i.e. Exodus 19:18-23; the theater analogy.

    3. A hymn or prayer may be utilized to help people prepare forministry.

    4. A Scripture reading, prayer, or hymn done in unison.

    5. The first song may be used to draw the crowd together, get peoplefocused, and then a call to worship could be used to declare the focus of theworship gathering.

    6. Tying in the worship with the message may also give you directionto lead the people in (i.e. if the message is on forgiveness, use that as the themeand lead the believers in singing about the forgiveness of God).

    7. Focus on the character and/or attributes of God.

    8. Testimony is good and commanded in Scripture, but directministry to God is so vital that it can justifiably be said that until we have adoredGod, we have not begun to worship - Herschel Rosser

    9. Mans sole purpose is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever -Westminister Confession

    10. My ministry was being changed by society around me more thanthe revelation of God - Jack Hayford

    11. Each day every person is subjected to forces that want to crushand oppress him or her. Worship breaks the bands of oppression and brings usinto partnership with God - Jack Hayford
