Greetings from Madison! Thank you EUM for your very
generous scholarship this year to help me in my tuition
payments! Your financial support allows me to continue
in my studies at this great university. I am a junior this
year studying finance in the UW-Business School. The
more a progress in college, the more I see the importance
in having a church family that supports you. Therefore, I
am very grateful I have EUM! My faith at school has
grown a lot the past few years, and I can attribute that to
the solid foundation that was instilled in me at EUM.
Thank you again!
In Him,
Alex

Mission News
The Impact of
One Righteous Father There is a deep-seated hatred among many of the ethnic mi-
nority people and the Burman people who make up the larg-
est ethnic group in Myanmar. In the northern most state, the
Kachin people are no different, even during their 17 years of
relative peace with the Burmese government, and in spite of
being Christian. For most of two decades they farmed their
lands and prospered in comparison to the other groups in
Myanmar, but they have not forgotten the crimes committed
against them by their own government. Being Christian, and
also being filled with hatred toward your Burmese country-
men is not only normal, it is expected.
Last week I (Kara) met a young Kachin woman from
Myanmar, named Charis (not her real name) working in
Chiang Mai, Thailand. She is part of a task-force working
against human trafficking, especially children from Myanmar
held captive in brothels. She is young, intelligent, beautiful,
multi-lingual and committed to helping children escape a hell-
ish existence. She is involved in raids. She listens to the hor-
rors these children have experienced as she attempts to prep
them for court (some as young as 4 years-old). She lives un-
der guard in a secure compound, hidden from perpetrators.
The Thai government respects her and refers to her–a for-
eigner from a despised neighboring country–as “top expert.”
An unexpected invitation came to Charis last month. The
Burmese government invited the Thai government’s “experts
on trafficking” to come and address them regarding the trans-
port of Burmese children across international borders to be
used in Thailand’s sex trade industry. The Burmese officials
were shocked to discover this “Kachin enemy” from their own
country being introduced as an expert by the Thai constitu-
ency.
After a long, disheartening but informative report, the
Burmese authorities apparently held Charis in awe. A couple
of them braved to say, “We can’t believe what you are doing
on behalf of Burman children.” (They must have been think-
ing of the Kachin women and children who were being
abused by the Burma Army).
“I can’t believe it either,” she replied. “It is because of the
God who lives within me. He makes it possible for me to do
this work.”
It is difficult to relay just how strategic Charis has been in
the fight against the trafficking and prostitution of Burmese
children here in Thailand. One friend likened her position to
that of Daniel, who advised kings who held his people captive.
Whenever someone shares an incredible story like this
with me, I am amazed, but not satisfied. I need to dig deeper.
“I want to ask you something more (continued on Page 9)
MISSION UPDATE
Garrison Family Myanmar Project
Dear Friends,
Greetings from our home to yours. We hope this letter
finds you in good spirits and enjoying the beautiful fall foli-
age. It is the time of year we miss most in the US.
The rainy season is coming to an end in Chiang Mai
and has left us with orchids, flowering trees and lush
greenery. We have settled into a new house that we’re
renting and we are trying to adjust to the dynamics of be-
ing a family of four.
These past few months we have been evaluating how
we are doing ministry, and how we could be doing it bet-
ter. We have been consulting with nationals from Myan-
mar to expand our perspective. The following story arose
from one of our many interviews. It’s a powerful reminder
that one average person can make a difference in the lives
of many others.
Thank you for your generous emotional, spiritual and
financial support. As always, we write with grateful hearts,
The Garrison Family [email protected]
Last month: displaced Kachin lighting candles as a prayer for peace. After a 17 year cease fire, the Burmese Army has again
invaded Kachin territory, violated women and children, and disrupted the peaceful lives of rice farmers.

Featured Teachers We want to honor and thank a few of our teachers each month. We appreciate them as they share their
gifts and talents with God’s kids at EUM – and we want to share their thoughts with you! These were our
August teachers.
Peg Thornton - Babies Bible Teacher How did you come to EUM? I have always been a Methodist and when our family was looking for a new church
home in Racine, EUM became our selection.
How do you see God working in your ministry? Having served as an elementary teacher, I am able to use my God
given talents in the Forever Friends Program. I have enjoyed teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and
presently Babies Bible. It is very satisfying seeing children grow in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ.
Jim Vass & Marion Dow-Vass - M&M’s Teachers How did you come to EUM? We came to EUM seven years ago looking for a more robust children's ministry for
our then 3 and 5 year old (now 10 and 13).
How do you see God working in your ministry? We are always moved as we see the confidence these children
gain as they transform and grow into amazing young people.
Sandy Dunker - FaithWeaver Friends How did you come to EUM? We moved to Wisconsin/Kenosha in 1999. Looking for a church, we attended several
different ones in the area, but none seemed to feel like home, or was such a joy, to attend as EUM.
How do you see God working in your ministry? As a Bible Blast coach for the past several years and now a Faith
Weaver Friends coach, I see the kids so inspired and with so much enthusiasm to learn about God. To hear what
they know about God's word is truly awesome.

• What Bible-reading habits and attitudes do you have? Which of
them would you like to pass on to
your own kids?
• How might you set aside more time
to delve into God’s Word?
• What are some ways that Scripture has helped you? What are some
ways it has challenged you?
SET A BIBLE ‘TRAP’ FOR KIDS
National Bible Week, observed in November, probably isn’t on your teens’ radar. But is the Bible? Surveys
show that Americans of all ages revere God’s Word yet don’t really read it. As longtime youth pastor Leneita Fix points out, “For many kids, the Bible is a boring, confusing, contradictory, and complicated collection of pronouncements, truisms, and even incantations.” The solution, she says, is to set a redemptive “trap” that gets young people magnetized to Scripture. Parents can adapt her strategy with these steps:
• Begin with yourself. Admit when your
relationship with God seems dry, and use Scripture as a path out of that desert.
• Equip kids with the “how.” Use a teen-
friendly Bible (and version), as well as a journal. Choose a good starting point and read in small chunks.
• Create opportunities to explore “what.” Discuss how words and concepts tie into the bigger story God is telling.
• Help teenagers find time to read. Begin with a commitment to read every day for five minutes. It takes about 21 days to start a habit.
• Help kids learn how to use study helps.
Dig deeper with resources such as Devour: Consuming the Word of God and Totally Infatuated (Simply Youth Ministry).
• Raise the bar. Give teenagers an epic challenge, such as reading the Bible in one year. Never underestimate the power of high expectations!

The SAGES do a lot of work at
EUM.
Recently we had a funeral. A
group of SAGES did a funeral
luncheon. As always, they did great work. It will soon
be time to decorate the church for Christmas. SAGES
will lead that effort. They also work in youth and chil-
dren’s ministries, choir, and more.
This is all great! The SAGES bring wisdom, experi-
ence, passion, and talent to every area they touch. (I
truly do love our SAGES.) However, some day, they
are not going to want to do these jobs anymore.
Someday, the church will need others to carry these
good works on. The time to prepare for that is now.
In I. Kings 19:16, Elijah is preparing to end his
ministry to Israel. He is told by God to anoint Elisha
to replace him. In II. Kings 2, Elisha does inherit
Elijah’s ministry. He asks one thing: to have a double
portion of Elijah’s spirit. He is given this spirit and
Elijah’s cloak, or ‘mantel’.
I have two challenges I wish to lay out today:
1. SAGES: look for a person who could re-
ceive your mantel.
2. Younger people: Seek to have the spirit to
carry on the good ministry SAGES have
done for so long at EUM.
There are so many areas to serve in at EUM. In
truth, this applies to people of any age. When we
meet people who have the skills and talents to serve
at EUM, we should attempt to engage them in minis-
try. Does someone like to cook? Invite them to help
on a luncheon or special occasion. Does someone
like to decorate? Invite them to help in seasonal
changes. Is someone honest and good with num-
bers? Encourage them to help the counters.
Do you have skills in these areas? Then meet the
people who do these ministries and find out how to
get involved.
Who do you know who could carry your mantle?
Ask God to show you the right people. Ask him to
bring new people for these ministries to EUM. Then,
share your spirit boldly and seek to pass your mantle
on to the next generation. You will benefit, they will
benefit, and EUM’s ministry will be strong well into
the future. It’s good for everyone.

Review:
One of my +2 EUM ministries has been to have the privi-
lege of being on the prayer-team or chain. The concerns in
our church family as well as a number of thing going on in
my personal life have been serious and heavy issues. I
found myself making excuses for my attitude in my prayer
life that had become rather grumbling and complaining to
God. I went searching my bookshelves to find something
that would turn my attitude around. Here are a couple of
books that I grabbed:
The Relentless Tenderness of Jesus, by Brennan Manning.
My personal copy is titled Lion & Lamb – This book is a
great reminder of who God is, I so enjoyed rereading it re-
cently.
The Bible, the Book of Colossians. I personally chose to
note Paul’s obsession with Jesus and not his own circum-
stances.
The personal effect of these two books have reminded me
to pray differently, not like: "Father, please deliver me (or
fill in the blank) from these painful circumstances" but
rather: "Father, please show me Jesus."

MISSION UPDATE
Corinne Haase Thirsty Land
I am excited to introduce you to
Sedat and Guzin Selamet, a Na-
tional couple whom the Lord has
chosen to carry His name in their
own country! They have an in-
credible ministry to young adults
in this Thirsty Land through
sports and counseling.
Sedat came to the Lord in 1994 through the influence of a
Christian group of young adults. He has served the Lord at
his church, as a DJ for a Christian radio, and on a JESUS
film team travelling throughout the country showing the
film and sharing the Gospel.
Guzin put her faith in Jesus in 1999 through a team just
like what I served on last year. As she asked the Lord for
guidance after college, she was led to study counseling
further.
Soon after they got married, they went to Denver, CO for
Guzin’s master’s degree in Counseling Ministries. God led
them to serve Him in full-time minsistry with Cru, reaching
out to young adults through sports and counseling in their
own country.
Sedat started a Christian soccer league in 2009 and 12
people have since come to the Lord through their ministry!
While many young men are influenced by Sedat through
sports, prayer before games and conversations about Je-
sus, Guzin has had an incredible influence on the young
women that come to watch the games through conversa-
tions and counseling.
Their mission is to reach out to lost souls and young be-
lievers through sports events, meetings, and one-on-one
converstations and counseling. Sedat and Guzin are eager
to disciple believers who are young in their faith and see
them grow in Christ.
How you can pray:
• Praise the Lord for calling Sedat and Guzin, for re-
deeming them, and for choosing them to be laborers
in their own country.
• Pray that the Lord’s hand and blessing would be upon
their ministry this year, that God would pour out his
Spirit on them and those they interact with. Pray that
many would come to know Jesus this year.
• Pray for the protection of their son Sezgin and daugh-
ter Sevgi from all evil and for their further growth in
the Lord as they start a new school year.
• Pray for guidance and wisdom for Guzin as she strives
to keep her priorities right before the Lord while get-
ting more involved in counseling.
In Christ, Corinne
More from Missions (continued from Page 3) personal,” I began. “Of all the peo-
ple in your country, wanting to do good works, how is it that
you have arrived at this strategic place of influence?” Charis
was already smiling, and I was still trying to figure out what I
really was looking for.
“My father...” the tears started to leak out of her eyes
and down her cheeks faster than she could wipe them. “My
father is a pastor in Kachin State, and from the earliest mem-
ory of my childhood, he said to us, ‘we will think differently’.”
Charis explained that her father’s posture of forgiving and
loving his enemies led to painful rejection. “Even now, my
extended family says to me, “You are not Kachin!” “Don’t you
know what the Burma Army is doing to our children?!” “Why
are you rescuing their children?!”
We waited. She wept.
“But my father said we were to live differently,” she
stated again, “he is the reason I am here today.”
I could not help but contrast this man to King Solomon
whom I have studied repeatedly over the past year. Solomon
sought after justice and wisdom, but failed to live righteously
before his sons. Writing down wise instruction for them did
not suffice. As a result, Solomon’s son fails his first on-the-
job-assignment as new king, destroying the nation.
In contrast, Charis’ father demonstrated righteous living
before his children, accepting rejection of his peers and his
relatives. Now his daughter advises the government officials
of two nations.
We ask that you pray for Charis. We cannot write her real
name nor provide a more realistic photo. She is a target for
those who pursue evil.
We realize the statistics regarding human trafficking are
almost paralyzing. But look at this statistic 1:1:1000s. One
father, impacts one daughter, who impacts thousands, for
what is impossible with man is possible with God. (Luke 18:27)
“All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.” Edmund Burke, political philosopher, 1729-1797
Let us unite in prayer that righteous men and women in Myanmar will rise to places of influence, and will remain
there with integrity... as well as in our own country... and let us faithfully hold them up in prayer, that they may
not succumb to moral compromise...intentionally, or unintentionally. Additionally, and arguably more impor-
tantly, pray that fathers and mothers will be righteous leaders within their families.

Jesus - that it is “more blessed to give than to receive”.
Initially, we may resent being asked to make a financial
commitment to the Church. It’s very normal to feel that
“What I earn belongs to me.” For that reason it’s impor-
tant for us to reflect and pray before we respond. As
Christians, we remember to celebrate what God has al-
ready done for us! It is out of gratitude that we desire to
say, “Thank you, God!” That’s when commitment becomes
a joy! Say thank you in 2013 as you generously commit a
portion of all you’ve received as a “thank you” gift to God.
In His service,
Steve Palmer
Finance Committee Chairperson
