Lenten Joy Many, if not most of us see the season of
Lent as a time to give up something, a time
for self-sacrifice and long faces all the way
until Easter. Lent is a time for self-denial
and giving to others. But this is not an end
in itself; it is a means to an end.
The goal toward which we aim ourselves
during Lent is a closer relationship with our
Crucified God. During the forty days of
Lent*, we as individuals and as a community
enter into a desert time much as J esus did
when the Spirit drove him into the
wilderness to be tested for his upcoming
ministry. When we voluntarily make a
Lenten sacrifice, we give ourselves the
opportunity to focus more completely on
unity with Christ, which is our truest hearts
desire. It is also part of our calling as
Christians, and is part of the ongoing
process of becoming holy.
* If you ve counted, and come up with 46 days in Lent, leave out the Sundays. Sundays for the Church are always little Easter , the day Our Lord rose from the dead, and therefore are never fast days! They are not included in the tallying of Lent.
While I don t plan a formal sermon series,
during Lenten services at New Hempstead
Presbyterian Church, we will think together
about holiness. What does holiness mean?
How does the Bible talk about holiness?
What does the Christian tradition say about
holiness? How are we made holy? Does
being holy
mean never
having any
fun again?
As we enter
this season of
reflection,
repentance,
and renewal
called Lent,
may God s Spirit bless each of us and our
congregation. May our Lent be one, not of
guilt and sorrow, but of gratitude and joy.
Blessings to you all,

Fellowship News From Joe Bermudez
The Game Night fellowship activity was a huge success. Sylvia L. Pridgen and her son helped set up and she lead the Dumb Bunny Bridge game. There were 23 people and 5 tables of 4 people each. There was plenty of food, refreshments and prizes. Most of all we had lots of fun. Many said, "Let s do it again."
Upcoming events include the Annual Palm Sunday Lunch on April 9. There will be a sign up sheet for anyone who wants to bring a covered dish. More details will follow.
This event will be followed by a full breakfast after 8 AM Morning Sunrise Service on April 16, Easter Sunday at Murchison Hall.
Confirmation Class Coming! From Pastor Lori
This is to invite all young people ages 12 15 who have not been confirmed to attend New Hempstead Presbyterian Church s Confirmation class 2006. Pastor Lori will meet with these young people for several weeks, beginning April 23. We as a congregation will celebrate their confirmation on Pentecost Sunday, June 4. Folks 12 and older who have not been confirmed watch you mailboxes in March for a letter of invitation with more details. Parents, there will be a letter for you as well!
Correction In the January/February 2006 edition, a table thanking lay leaders and ushers was incomplete. The following four people were not given proper credit:
The Carriage Stone regrets the error and thanks these members for their service.

Spring Clean up From Pam Charbonneau, Buildings & Grounds
Spring is just around the corner, and that means it is time for the annual spring cleaning event! On Saturday, March 25, we will be getting the buildings and grounds ready for the Easter season. We have lots of polishing, window washing, painting, and some small repairs to do in the buildings, and raking and litter pickup on the grounds.
The clean up will start at about 9:30 and refreshments will be provided for all of our volunteers. Please mark the date on your calendars and join us at the church. Let s make our home shine!
This issue marks the end of my fifth year of putting together The Carriage Stone. I greatly appreciate all the support I have received over the years by your
writing articles, sharing information, sending in filler material and offering kind words.
It is not well recognized, however, how much work Shirley Martignetti puts into the newsletter as well. I just print one copy of the text; Shirley adds the calendar page, corrects my errors, duplicates, collates, addresses and mails the newsletter.
In addition, Denise Farro maintains the online edition of The Carriage Stone on our church web site, nhpchurch.org. Last issue, we put in extra color photos of Lori s installation in the on-line edition. This month, color photos of Howard s figurines will be featured online. Next month, perhaps you will provide color photos of something related to NHPC that we could share in this way.

What Does Howard Whitehouse Do, Anyway?
From Howard Whitehouse
I thought I'd send a few pictures and explain a little of what I do with my odd little business, known as Brushes with Danger! I paint model figurines mostly about 30mm high, and build custom scenery of almost any type. My work has been featured in hobby magazines like Wargames Illustrated, the Courier and Historical Miniatures Gamer (which 99 of 100 people have never heard of!) I ll have a go at almost anything smaller than Blenheim Palaceactually, I prefer scruffy peasant dwellings to the great houses of the world but I ve built Country Manors and Chinese temples. Most of my work goes to private collectors in the US, Canada and Australia, although I have done one museum display piece.
My website is at: www.thevirtualarmchairgeneral.com
just follow the links through to Brushes with danger!
I do all my own stunts.
[For the Metric-challenged, 30 mm is about 1¼ inch.
For the European History-challenged, Blenheim Palace is a tremendously large home built for the Duke of Marlborough and was the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.
Blenheim Palace was named for the Battle of Blenheim, which was an important English victory and prevented French domination of Europe.
Howard Whitehouse has recently completed the second Edition of his Classic Wargame Rules for the Sudan Campaigns, 1882 1899.
Here are some pictures of miniatures followed by the cover to How ard s rules for the Sudan Campaigns.
