? NEW TO ST. LUKE'S?

St. Luke’s United Methodist Church 4851 S. Apopka-Vineland Rd. Orlando, FL 32819

Phone: 407.876.4991 Website: st.lukes.org

Our culture defines the church according to a building or the hour of 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning, but what if you could find a community of people who believed church was a catalyst for change? What if Church was more about working together to make a difference in our community rather than just meeting together for an hour a week?

As a congregation we value Christ-centered love lived out in acceptance, hospitality, community, discipleship and service. We long for everyone to experience the Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors of God’s Church. If you’re a St. Luke’s member or attend regularly we hope you’ll “Simply Invite” your friends to join you for worship and experience who we are as a Church for themselves. If you don’t have a place to grow spiritually, ask questions about God or connect with others, we hope you’ll come back and join us as well. This Worship Guide will provide you with many opportunities to connect with our diverse ministries. We invite you to get involved!

To assist parents and restless babies during worship, we have a glass-enclosed room in the back of the Sanctuary and the gym lobby area available. We also offer a free nursery in Building A for babies who are at least six weeks old.

After worship, please stop by the Service Station in Building C to receive a Welcome Gift and let us answer your questions.

SERVEWithin Our Community

HUNGER IN OUR COMMUNITY: WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP? Nearly 49 million Americans, including 16.2 million children (22%) under the age of 18 face hunger in their household. In 2011, Florida was sixth amongst states ranking higher than the national average of 16.2%. There is plenty of food for everybody in the U.S., but the challenge is that people who live in poverty find it extremely difficult to access nutritious and affordable food. These are overwhelming statistics, but we can do our part right here in our community through our own anti-hunger ministries. For more information, visit the table in the Welcome Hall in Building C or sign up to help by contacting Sharon Briggs at [email protected].

• Coalition for the Homeless: Every third Saturday, St. Luke’s prepares and serves nutritious meals to the residents at the Coalition. You can serve four ways: bake from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at St. Luke’s; cook & prepare meals from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the shelter; serve at the shelter from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and assist with unloading and sorting food for an hour in the Fellowship Hall the Friday before the service.

• Summer Lunch Program: Serve pre-packed food at Mollie Ray Elementary School. St. Luke’s collaborates with Orange County Public School Food & Nutrition Program and Mollie Ray Elementary to provide lunch for children in the Pine Hills community. When school is closed in the summer, 88% of the children who depend on free and reduced lunch face hunger or their families struggle financially as they juggle feeding their kids and paying other bills.

• Food Pick Up: For 2.5 hours a day every other week, help the Food Pick Up team collect food and baked goods which would otherwise go to waste, and deliver to West Orange Daily Bread, Edgewood Children’s Ranch and Coalition for the Homeless. While the number of people who face hunger in our community is staggering, equally astounding is the amount of food our city wastes.

• Take the SNAP challenge: Can you feed yourself and your family on $1.49 per person per day? That’s the amount that people on the Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP or Food Stamp) get. Come to the information table in the Welcome Hall in Building C near the gym, and we’ll give you the information on how to take part in this eye-opening challenge.

PICK A SATURDAY TO SERVE AT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: The new Habitat House is located at 710 South Park Avenue in Winter Garden. Volunteer to provide lunches for approximately 14 to 20 construction volunteers at the construction site or sign up for one of the following construction volunteer opportunities: May 11-install windows, continue siding, and install a plywood ceiling over carport. May 18-complete siding, start fascia and soffit, and prepare for framing inspection. May 25-continue soffit work and make up day. Contact Sharon Briggs at [email protected] to sign up.

FALL 2013 BELFAST MISSION TEAM INFORMATION MEETING ON MAY 9: As part of St. Luke’s commitment to connect with and tranform a neighborhood, we will be taking a mission team to Belfast. This will be an opportunity to learn from our mission partners about community involvement and transformation. Find out details about dates, cost, schedule, and preparation for this experience to determine if this is a good fit for you. Attend the meeting on Thursday, May 9 at 7:00 p.m. in Building C Room 208. For more information, contact Lynette Fields at [email protected] or 407.876.4991 ext.*230.
