In today’s Gos-pel, we hear the story of Martha and Mary. Je-sus was their friend and loved the warmth and comfort he found when
visiting them at their home in Bethany.
Today, we see from the heart and lips of Martha an intense worry. The rea-son for the worry? By nature, Mary was more contemplative and thrived on silence and reflection. On the con-trary, Martha was a ball of energy! By nature, she was very active as an or-ganizer, a planner, homemaker and cook. In today’s story, we see Martha also liked things to get done according to her plans and schedule.
When Jesus came to their house to visit, Martha was frustrated that her sister didn’t help serve Him. In an effort to have things ready for Jesus more quick-ly, Martha complains to Jesus about what she thought was a very justifiable
complaint! This seems to be a fairly reasonable request for someone like Martha - very logical, practical, well-ordered and reasonable. Jesus’ re-sponse was a bit surprising. Instead of Jesus telling Mary to hurry up and help Martha so things could run perfectly according to Martha’s schedule, Jesus gently rebukes Martha. Listen to Jesus’ words: “Martha, Martha, you are anx-ious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” Who do you resonate with the most in this story? Martha or Mary?
If Millennials and Gen Z’ers had to be labeled as ‘Martha or Mary’ most would assume they are all Mary’s. Just chilling, no worries, no need to stress. Earlier this month, James Opdenhoff, our youth minister and myself had the pleasure of accompanying our teens to Camp Covecrest in Northern Georgia. What a phenomenal experience!
With so much noise in the world, we decided a few years ago to have the teens ‘give up’ their mobile devices. As
we arrive at the beautiful Appalachian Mountain camp site, the dreaded pil-low case comes out: it is time for the teens to give up their phone. Initially, a few of them pout, but by the time we hit ‘lights out’ that evening, most of them have forgotten about texting, Fa-cebook, Instagram and Snapchat. As the week progresses, it’s amazing to see them actually talk to, and interact-ing with, one another. During meals, you can hardly hear because everyone is talking to each other, laughing, just enjoying each other’s company. Wit-nessing them has moved me to start making a conscientious effort to dis-connect, which will help to filter out the noise in the world.
Covecrest Thank You! This year’s Camp Covecrest experience did not disappoint. I cannot express how amazing it is to witness 40 Saint Pius X teens move closer to Christ and His Church. On behalf of Fr. Brady, Fr. Pitre, James, the Saint Pius X staff, and most importantly, the teens, THANK YOU for your support.

ACTS is a parish-based retreat in which parishioners serve parishioners. The ACTS Retreat, an acronym for Adoration, Community, Theology and Service, began in the 1980’s in San Antonio, Texas. The retreat’s goals are to strengthen
our faith and its application in our daily life, to renew our-selves spiritually, to build strong, lasting friendships, and to grow in our relationship with our Lord, our parish and one another. The ACTS weekend is presented by lay Catholic men, with support provided by a Spiritual Director/companion or clergy. Parishioners who serve on ACTS re-treats strive to provide the opportunity for our parish com-munity to experience, become, and share the Body of Christ. Once parishioners attend a St. Pius X Parish ACTS Retreat, they can help serve on the upcoming retreat. Please consid-er this wonderful gift to yourself or someone you love.
