Our ten-day trip will have our Team working on a battered women’s shelter sponsored by the local Costa Rican Methodist Church. Tasks to be completed will include: septic system installation, water hookup to the building, handrails installed on the 2nd floor of the building and stairways, plumbing fixtures installed in bathroom, hallway and bathroom lights installed, and power turned on to the building. Imagine if our church could collect $400 to $500 dollars each week for 52 weeks a year for a variety of mission projects above and beyond what we already do for missions? What does it cost for all of us to give up one dollar a week? Maybe a candy bar, a soft drink or a bag of peanuts. Help us make a greater difference in our world by supporting this new mission opportunity in 2017. Mission projects for the “Mission Box” will be noted in the Friday E Blast and Sunday bulletin. You should have received a letter last week, reminding you of the opportunity to give a special offering at Christmas. Your offerings to St. Luke’s allow the church to be the hands and feet of Christ not only at Christmas, but all year long. This offering would be a ‘second mile gift’, meaning it is above your regular or pledged

giving. Please prayerfully give your special offering before the end of the year.

Remember, if you want to have your donation included on your 2016 Contribution Statement, your check or cash must be either received in the Church Office, or stock transfer in process, by Friday, December 30th.

If you plan to mail your year-end contribution, it must be postmarked no later than December 31st. All contributions placed in the offering plate on Sunday, January 1st – regardless of the check date – will be posted in 2017.

Stories from Westview

This week, we celebrate Christmas at the Westview

UMC Mission! There will be a special meal,

Christmas carols, gift bags, and Christmas

games. Many of the people who join us there will not

have much of a Christmas at home since they are

struggling to keep their heads above water. One

family has been without heat since last year. Several

are battling health issues and not able to buy

medicine or proper healthy foods. Some are

struggling with addictions and are without the tools

and resources that most of us have access to. There

are at least 4 or 5 who are homeless and are sleeping

in tents in the cold. But, on Tuesday nights… we

all come together to share life with each other.

We at St Luke’s and Westview have the privilege of

being a part of that community and the honor of

sharing life with everyone. It is truly a blessing to

be considered a friend to those who come. Won’t

you join us? Contact Pastor Cindy, Pastor Nancy, or

Salema Mells if you would like to be a part of this

amazing community. Your life will never be the same

again!

Greetings from Pastor Noel in San Diego,

Nicaragua

St. Luke’s was part of a community development

project in the community of San Diego, Nicaragua

and Pastor Noel is the main community leader who

worked with us:

Dear St. Luke’s,

“How is it going? God bless you... I want to tell you

that the water project has been extended to the

entire community and they are very grateful for

the blessing of God and you as a church in St

Luke’s who supported this community. We always

pray for you.

We want to tell you that our granddaughter Naomi

will be promoted out of preschool.

Merry Christmas and a happy and successful New

Year.

Blessings and good health to you all.”

Pastor Jose Noel Jimenez Arguijo”

A Special Greeting from Our Missionaries Ronnie

and Angi Hopkins

We wish all of you a Merry Christmas and thank

you for your support and encouragement

throughout the years. This January we will be

starting our 11th year in Nicaragua and we know

that none of this would be possible without you.

We are thankful!

Blessings, Ronnie and Angi

Christmas Greetings from Bishop Paul and Janet Leeland

Friends and Colleagues: Janet and I wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas. May the joy and happiness we experience this Christmas with those we love be a deep source of enduring gladness reminding us of what is most important in life. This deep awareness of acceptance and love simply re-flects the fruit of Jesus’ birth, that we will know the approval and love of God for us. Each sign of laughter, gratitude, and thanksgiving is a reminder of God’s joy in extending salvation and eternal love to us through the gift of Jesus, the Word made flesh, the visible image of the invisi-ble God, Emmanuel – God with us. The book of Chronicles tells the story of God’s favor from Adam to the reign of Solomon. The Canticle of I Chronicles 16:8-12, captures the uncontained happiness of God’s goodness to-wards us and our natural expression of gratitude for God: Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples. Sing to him, sing praises to him, tell of all his wonderful works. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his presence continually. Remember the wonderful works he has done, his miracles, and The judgments he uttered. The emotions expressed in the canticle help us to appreciate the reverence of the magi and shepherds at the birth of Jesus. In the Gospel of Luke, Elizabeth filled with the Holy Spirit ex-claimed with a loud cry at the visit of Mary, “Why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me?” This is our question also, how is it that the Lord God has come to us? Christmas reminds us, it is true, God is with us. My prayer is that we will recognize the Presence of God among us each moment; our hearts will be filled with joy; those who preach this good news will be strengthened by wonder and happi-ness; and that we might live the Gospel life until God’s return in glory. Elizabeth continues her words of pleasure at Mary’s visit by acknowledging Mary’s obedience to God, “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled” (Lk. 1:45). May it be so with us as well – that we might be blessed this Christmas season by God for believing all that has been spoken to us. Merry Christmas, Paul and Janet Leeland

Do you know a young person in your church who is feeling God may be calling them into ministry?

IDK (I don’t know) is an event to help youth explore that sense of calling.

This day-long event will provide youth a place to hear about what a calling is, hear call stories, explore their spiritual gifts, and

connect with each other. Youth are asked to bring an adult lay mentor with them who can spend this time learning how to support a young person

who is feeling called into ministry.

Where: St. Luke’s UMC in Hickory, NC Time: 8 am until 5 pm

Registration Fee: $20 per person

(It is recommended that the church pay the registration fee for the youth and their lay mentor to show their support of God’s calling at work.)

Register online at www.callingidk.com
