    EDUCATION OF ANCIENT GREEKS

    Greek education was vastly democratized in

    5th century B.C. influenced by:

    - Sophist

    - Plato

    - Socrates

    Gymnasium considered as inextricable

    prerequisite for participation in Greek culture

    Two Forms of Education:

    1. Formal Education

    - attained thru attendance to a public school or

    was provided by a hired tutor

    - primarily for men in general

    - not offered to slaves, manual laborers or

    women

    2. Informal Education

    - Provided by an unpaid teacher and occurred in

    non-public setting

    - Young girls would receive an informal

    education from her mother and would be

    taught:

    Maintain household

    Raising children

    Preparing foods

    Making textiles

    Education was an essential component of a

    personal identity in Ancient Greece, and the

    type of education a person received was based

    strongly in ones social class, the culture of

    ones polis, and the opinion of ones culture on

    what education should include.

    Greek education focused heavily on training the

    entire person which includes education of mind,

    body and imagination.

    Athenian System

    - Traditionally gave more attention to music,

    literature, dance, and later to the natural

    sciences such as:

    Biology

    Chemistry

    Philosophy

    Geometry

    Astronomy

    Rhetoric

    Sophistry art of presenting arguments using

    deception and reason to persuade the public to

    agree to certain point of view.

    Gymnasium

    - Taught by private teacher called paidotribe

    - Boys begin training necessary for improving

    ones appearance, preparation for war, and

    good health.

    4. Post Secondary

    Spartan System

    - all male citizens become successful soldiers

    with the stamina and skills to defend their polis

    - only the healthiest male babies born are

    allowed to live

    - education emphasizes on military training

    Education of Spartan Women

    - unlike Athenian women, Spartan women

    received a formal education that was

    supervised and controlled by the state

    - women are expected to run the polis while the

    men were at the war

    - Spartan women received informal physical

    education when they reach 18
