World Wide Wrap with Dor Hadash
Date: February 3, 2013
Locations: Temple Israel, Sharon Massachusetts and Moishe House, Budapest Hungary
Participants: Temple Israel Share Brotherhood members, members of the Temple Israel and surrounding congregations, and members of Dor Hadash.
Program Details: Temple Israel Sharon Brotherhood has been participating in the World Wide Wrap since its inception. Previously we’ve shown a video, do some teaching on how to wrap, run a full morning service and then sponsor a breakfast. This year we invited our new chaverim, the members of Dor Hadash in Budapest, Hungary to join with us. As part of our learning from each other we discovered that the FJMC has provided tefillin but the members of Dor Hadash lacked some basic knowledge on how to wrap, why to wrap and what it means to wrap.
The Temple Israel Brotherhood working in coordination with Dor Hadash set up a video conference using Google+ Hangouts, a laptop and video projector in Massachusetts and a laptop with a web camera in Budapest. We invited the entire Temple community, men and women, and had our rabbi, Rabbi Barry Starr, give a d’var. In it he discussed the parts of tefillin, what makes them kosher, how they should be worn, when they should be worn and most importantly why we wear them. After the d’var, we held a full Shacharit service where we both davened. After the service we had a dialog where we learned about each other’s community and had some Hungarian survivors in the Temple Israel community and other Hungarian descendants speak in Hungarian with Dor Hadash.
The agenda was:
0800 (Eastern USA time) using Google+ Technical checks 08:30-09:15: Rabbi Barry Starr of Temple Israel will go over the putting on of tefillin and a d’var
on its meaning 09:00-09:45: Shacharit service
o Dor Hadash will read the prayer for Israel in Hungariano Temple Israel will read the prayer in Hebrewo Dor Hadash will recite the Amidah out loud
10:00: Introductions of both communities to one another and group discussion
We had over 50 men and women in Sharon and about half dozen men and women in Budapest despite a snow storm there. It was a wonderful experience and one which we hope to repeat again.
