The sobriquets roll so easily off the tongue: The Big Apple, Beantown, The O.C., The ATL, the Aloha and Lone Star States... they’re memorable because the USA has eternal exploratory allure. Be it your first, tenth or thirtieth trip, you never cease discovering, and with each piece of the colossal continent possessing its own personality, you wonder if you ever really know America.

Our ‘Destination’ stories in June are dedicated to the USA because not only is it a goldmine of travel-tale inspiration, but it is becoming easier than ever to fly there direct. Airlines in the region have set their sights on dedicated daily routes that criss-cross to major U.S. hubs, making the adventures in this issue totally attainable.

Join the fun on ‘Henman Hill’, catch a glimpse of the monarchy in their Royal Box and keep an eye out for Rufus the hawk, Wimbledon’s unofficial mascot who flies around the grounds every morning before the tournament begins. Moscow, Russia

Moscow is such a lively city and it’s important to get up early so you have time to see as much as possible. Breakfast at Bosco Café is a great reason to jump out of bed; it’s a really cheerful Italian restaurant with the most grandiose views of the Red Square; great for a morning coffee.

I always recommend that visitors who don’t have copious amounts of time should take a city tour, so that they’re able to enjoy Moscow’s fantastic architecture. If you’re an art lover like me, the Tretyakov Gallery is an absolute must. It’s an incredible museum about the history of Russian art and its permanent exhibition showcasing

early twentieth-century masterpieces is unlike any other. You can also catch a guided tour nearby, which will take you through the Rem Koolhaas-designed Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious dinner at the museum’s excellent café. The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is great for those looking for peace and quiet. The museum’s ‘babushkas’ will shush anybody speaking louder than a whisper!

I usually stay at the St. Regis Moscow Nikolskaya or the Four Seasons Hotel. Both offer luxurious stays and are only a few minutes away from the bustling heart of historic Moscow.

The most memorable place you’ll visit is the arty and bohemian Red October Island: an old chocolate factory in the middle of the city’s river has been transformed into an isolated island of culture and entertainment. You can find everything from galleries and boutiques

to restaurants and bars. The Bontempi Restaurant and Strelka Bar have picturesque terraces with stunning views of the river and skyline across the water. All the bars in the affluent residential area, Patriarshiye Ponds, are also fabulous.

A lot of people don’t know that Moscow has over 440 museums with art collections so vast and diverse that they can easily be compared to the most famous in the world. Also, many cities rightfully envy Moscow for it numerous public parks. The oldest, Aleksandrovsky Garden, was established in the early nineteenth century.

Those with cash to splash should head to nata4tsum at TsUM (a department store), or Kamergersky Lane for the latest collection by RUBAN – my favourite Russian designer. Afterwards, treat yourself at Dr. Zhivago Restaurant next to Hotel National for excellent modern Russian cuisine, partnered with splendid views of the Moscow Kremlin.

Q. With Ramadan being observed, which destinations are on your radar and prove popular at this time?A. This is a unique year for travel because schools break in Ramadan and the two Eid holidays pretty much fall within the time that many people are enjoying an escape from the GCC heat. Right now it’s important to get that big key holiday in place, so why not choose to visit the East or West Coast of the USA? Summer is a wonderful time to relax on the streets of LA and take some time on the coast around Newport Beach, delve into the Napa Valley or take a drive down the Big Sur. Scotland is a wonderful part of the UK in which to vacation (in the warm summer months, especially), with

the sun hardly setting the further north you travel. In France, travel down to the Cote D’Azur and enjoy some time in the choice de jour of European families. Other trending explorations are in completely new regions. Azerbaijan (specifically Baku) is increasingly popular, and five-night tours of Georgia’s stunning countryside are being booked more and more, as is the opportunity to enjoy the music scene in the rejuvenated districts of Belgrade in Serbia. Alternatively, head away from land regions and take a yacht around the coast of Croatia or the luxurious small Balkan nation of Montenegro. Greece is another destination offering a mix of sea, sun and culture. As author Andre Gide once said, “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”

Q. Families often book rooms when going away, but what are the benefits of opting for a suite? Which are the standout suites you recommend trying? A. A family trip is the time to enjoy each other’s company but we also want a bit of space to relax. Suites enable space to be used as a family area in the daytime and an elegant retreat for adults at night. The extra cost of the suite experience can sometimes be more prudent than interconnecting rooms or a Junior Suite plus a room. Once deciding to invest in a suite (with all the

fantastic extras including club lounge access, dedicated car services, high-tech in-room amenities etc), where does one go? They’re both conveniently located close to Shoreditch, which has plenty of vintage boutiques. It’s also near Columbia Road Flower Market (columbiaroad.info) and the picturesque Hackney Canal. The latter is beautifully picturesque and perfect for a relaxing summer stroll.

Bargain hunting works up an appetite and I always grab a bite to eat at Farm Girl (thefarmgirl.co.uk) or HIX Soho (hixrestaurants.co.uk). E veryone says it, and it’s true – your wedding day really does fly by. After a ceremony that passed in a blur, my

new wife and I had the last (and, don’t tell her, most exciting) part still to come. We’d spent weeks planning our honeymoon getaway, to a destination that for most still feels like a step too far – all the way to the USA, then double the distance to reach Hawaii? Even for a honeymoon, that’s a lot of plane travel. We found out that getting to paradise was worth every minute in the air.

The usual way to reach Hawaii, after a whirlwind wedding in the UK, is to fly to the west coast of the US, normally exploring lively San Francisco or Los Angeles before a short hop over the Pacific. We’re not really ones for normal, so we decide our stop in the mainland US would be New York City.

The first perk of honeymooning is a Virgin Atlantic upgrade to Premium Economy, which is a revelation. It may not sound like much, but over the course of nine hours the more comfortable seats and service really make a difference – I’ve been in upper class on some airlines that felt less luxurious. After touching down, a yellow cab takes us from JFK through the city’s endlessly breathtaking skyline to our destination, The Peninsula 5th Avenue.

Even after several visits, there’s plenty that New York can offer. Sombre reflection can be found at the new memorial museum dedicated to the events of September 11, 2001. Neatly split into two distinct sections – a timeline of the events on that terrible day, and how New York and the US as a whole has rebuilt – the memorial offers a poignant and humanised view of the day’s loss. Thoughtfully designed on the ground where the Twin Towers once stood, it may not seem like an obvious destination for tourists, but as a museum and a memorial, it is both inspiring and humbling. The newly-opened Freedom Tower, which stands alongside it, is a symbol of hope, with the observation deck a new rival to compete with the Empire State Building for views of the famous old city.

Somewhat emotionally drained, a light-hearted walk is just what the doctor ordered – so we meander from the south of Manhattan to the west, trying to find the High Line. This overground garden is built on an old railway line, and runs for several blocks up and down the Meatpacking District, and on our visit it’s densely populated with office workers basking in the unseasonably warm spring weather. In a city as busy as New York, it’s an incredible oasis of greenery and even tranquillity, and has a thriving market of coffee stalls and vendors selling t-shirts and postcards.

New York is truly a city for sports nuts. It’s home to the official headquarters of the NBA, NFL, NHL Major League Baseball and even its newest obsession, Major League Soccer. Venerable sporting venues like Madison Square Garden and Brooklyn’s

Barclays Centre are tourist destinations in their own right, but depending on what sport you follow you’ll need to book your trip accordingly. Baseball season begins in April, and basketball starts in October. In early March it’s ice hockey time, with New York’s rival sides the Rangers and the Islanders doing battle with each other and local enemies from Pittsburgh and New Jersey. We call in at an Islanders game to catch some of the action, as well as buy foam fingers and novelty hats – and as an alternative to a Broadway show, a night on the ice offers just as much drama, with the home side running out with a narrow 1-0 victory. Battling jetlag, the main event of the honeymoon is still to come. Paradise is just an 11-hour flight away…

A s you’ll be on the road quite a lot on Hawaii’s Big Island, a fun game to pass the time is counting tourists

driving identical Jeep Wranglers. The island is 150km across, and it takes around four hours to circumnavigate, so there’s plenty of opportunity to play – although after seeing our 50th, we decided that we had more important things to watch out for. It’s a good thing too, as the roadside scenery is utterly spectacular. On the west, where the gorgeous Fairmont Orchid lies at sea level, it’s all sunshine, palm trees and volcanic scrubland. The further east you drive, the gradual elevation as you pass over one of the island’s two active volcanoes puts you up in the clouds and into the rain. Twenty minutes after leaving blazing sunshine with stunning views over the Pacific, you’re enveloped in fog, rain battering your Jeep and imposing jungle greenery on all sides. If it looks like the set of Jurassic Park, that’s because it is – the 1993 blockbuster was filmed here, and for all the world you’d be forgiven for expecting a T-Rex to come crashing out of the foliage. Big Island has ten different microclimates, making it meteorologically unique.

There are plenty of diversions off the main roads. If you drive around the island in a vaguely clockwise fashion, you’ll pass through the town of Waimea, home to our favourite restaurant on the island, Pau’s Pizzeria. Inside is captivating artwork from local collage artist Margo Ray, as well as fresh seafood and much more. Suitably fuelled, the journey resumes. The first stop

we make is one of the best of the entire trip, at the Waipio Valley lookout in the Hamakua district. Big Island is full of signs that point out scenic areas, but Waipio is one of the more noteworthy. It was the capital and home to many early Hawaiian kings in the early days of Hawaii’s settlement, and was the boyhood home of the legendary warrior King Kamehameha I. Even today, among the waterfalls and taro plantations in the valley below, a few dozen native Hawaiians still live. Set into the valley’s furthest wall is the Big Island’s tallest waterfall, Hiilawe Falls, which gushes down over 1300 feet.

Unfortunately, this incredible specimen isn’t possible to access by helicopter, since it’s almost always shrouded in fast-moving cloud and mist. Your best bet is to continue further east to the town of Hilo, which sends choppers up daily despite being the wettest city in the whole of the United States, enduring up to 156 inches of rain per year. A flight with Blue Hawaiian tours promises spectacular volcano and waterfall views, so we eagerly sign up and take our seats at the front of the helicopter. Our pilot Coleen, a cheerful Idahoan who’s lived in Hawaii for six years, keeps up a fascinating commentary as we hover over Mauna Kea, the highest mountain – and highest active volcano – in Hawaii. Contrary to what the guidebooks display, there aren’t geysers spouting jets of molten lava at the peak, but the way the lava moves is still interesting. The red-hot magma lies just beneath a thin crust of cooled rock, which slowly spreads

For our final days we make the relatively short drive to Hawi, at the northernmost tip of the island. This hip enclave is strewn with cute boutique stores, amazing restaurants including Sushi Rocks (the nagiri with freshly caught seafood cannot be beat) and wonderfully distinct houses. Some ten miles further up the highway is the Pololu Valley lookout, similar to Waipio Valley but with a pleasant hiking path that takes you down to the black sand beach,

downwards underneath the mountain, in directions that are impossible to predict. Property prices at the foot of Mauna Kea are the lowest anywhere in Hawaii because at any point Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire, might decide to send an incredibly slow-moving avalanche of lava in its direction, inexorably destroying everything in its stately path. I ask Coleen whether you can walk around on the grey crust below us. “You could once,” she replies wryly, going on to explain that in places the crust is just inches thick – which would mean a swift descent into a lake of molten lava. After a loop around Mauna Kea’s peak – where a hole in the crust allows a glimpse of the roiling, neon orange furnace beneath – Coleen swoops over a series of glittering waterfalls, before touching back down at Hilo airport. We get the chance to see some of Pele’s work in person at the nearby Volcano National Park, where visitors can walk through a ‘lava tube,’ one of the subterranean tunnels made by flowing lava hundreds of years ago that’s since cooled and solidified into something safe enough to explore. There’s also plenty of information to be found about Hawaii’s volcanic past, formed from fire in the Pacific Ocean.

Among the waterfalls and taro plantations in the valley, a few native Hawaiians still live

popular with surfers. Don’t miss the statue of King Kamehameha on the way, either – another fascinating diversion on an island stuffed full of them.

Hawaii is perfect for those that want to explore, or just unwind on a hammock enjoying sunshine and birdsong. As long as you can stop counting Jeeps, that is. Paradise well and truly found.

Live the dream: Not so very long ago, you’d have had to do this road trip by boat. Remember although the brilliant, smooth Overseas Highway makes it easy to forget the Keys are a string of islands so distinct from mainland America that residents call themselves the ‘Conch Republic’ and have an annual water fight with US Border Patrol. This wild and watery odyssey is all about taking your time. Sure, the drive from shabbily charming Key Largo (nearest to the mainland) to kooky Key West can be done in two hours but why would you? Even locals don’t hit the speed limit and any rookie mistakes you make will be dismissed with a friendly wave (horns don’t get honked in the Keys).

Make it happen: Spend at least one night in Key Largo. It’s a delightfully dog-eared pitstop, where not a split second of the classic namesake movie was filmed, though it doesn’t stop bar owners displaying life-size models of Humphrey Bogart… Kona Kai (konakairesort.com) is a collection of cottages on the coast among botanical gardens: the style is ‘Flori-bbean’ fabulous.

Next day, get southerly and sultry. The Keys are eccentric, gentrified, and hick in parts; it’s undeniable as you drive through understated Tavernier, barefoot-bling Islamorada, then bucket-and-spade Marathon. Stop at Robbie’s Marina (marker 77.5) to feed the giant tarpon fish a USD3 thrill. If you want to stay over (there’s big-game-fishing, snorkelling and dolphin experiences in these here parts), check in at retro-cool Amara Cay.

Seven Mile Bridge starts right after Marathon – a concrete curve of engineering

mastery that runs alongside the crumbling 1912 original, now used as a jogging track and fishermen’s drop-off point. From here to Key West unravels the most spectacular stretch of the Overseas Highway, with the epic Atlantic on one side, mangroves, marshy forests and simple stilted homes on the other. Stop for a swim in Bahia Honda State Park, where you’ll find the Keys’ best beach aim to be here for low tide if you can, as it means more sandy space for picnics.

Key West is the star of the show, with its glorious (but not overly groomed) historic district. Stay at the white clapboard Marker (themarkerkeywest.com). Time to tick off your Keys fantasies: Key lime pie at Kermit’s (200 Elizabeth St and 802 Duval St); conch fritters (anywhere); and a stroke of one of Hemingway’s 60 cats (his home is now a museum; hemingwayhome.com). Then join the nightly sunset party on Mallory Square there’s live music, cheesy performance artists, and a rowdy communal ‘whoop!’ as the red fireball drops into the sea. So why do the Keys feel so different, so magical? Never forget: on Key West, you’re nearer to Cuba than to the closest Walmart.

Handy steer: Don’t be put off driving a convertible for sensible reasons, such as cost, weather or security. American models can be had dirt-cheap. Meanwhile, the slow speed of the Keys means your tyres never get a blowout, while modern, bigger boots hold two suitcases – practical.

How long you need: You could make this a dawn-’til-dusk day trip from Miami, but better to take a week and see it slo-mo.

Live the dream: The waves are crashing just off your right shoulder; the sky is the bluest you’ve ever seen; cyclists are taking the route by your side; and the sun looks like pure gold. It’s almost as if you’re seeing everything through a magic lens but this is just Pacific Highway Coast sea-spray.

Make it happen: You’ll begin to get a feel for this iconic road in the two hours it takes you to get from San Francisco to Santa Cruz (travel north to south as it means the coast will always be on your near side). Santa Cruz has rousing beach walks and a pretty pier. You’ll also want to stop at craggy Monterey and cutesy Carmel before you get to Big Sur, the scenic star of your trip. This is when you really understand what the Pacific Coast Highway is all about. At Big Sur the cliffs get rugged, the roads begin to snake, you drive a little higher,

Santa Barbara is the ideal contrast it’s flashier, with lots of wineries offering tastings, plus excellent tacos (try Mony’s) and very expensive real estate. Make sure you squeeze in some surf time in Malibu, too, before you hit Los Angeles proper.

then turn right along Route 9 — the Molly Stark Trail — for one of Vermont’s classic leaf-peeping runs. You’ll weave your way through the fairy-tale woods of Green Mountain National Forest, but when you emerge an hour or two later at cutesy Wilmington, you won’t even have scratched the surface, so turn left up Route 100 along a river valley as far as Killington. It’s a ski town in winter but a great base for walks the rest of the year; stay at the cosy Snowed Inn (snowedinn.com).

Head east, next, into New Hampshire and the White Mountain National Forest, an epic expanse of beech, hemlock and birch with biblically dramatic Mount Washington in its midst. Cutting right through the thick of it is arguably the world’s best Fall-foliage drive, the Kancamagus Highway an eyes-wide-open dream of waterfalls, wooden bridges, swim-holes, switchbacks and those colours.

Live the dream: Route 66. The Mother Road. Main Street of America. Whatever you call this slinky gal (measuring a lengthy 4,000km from start to finish), her most icon-laden stretch runs from Texas into New Mexico. Pack your camera and get ready for a road trip down memory lane.

Make it happen: Once you’ve driven from Dallas airport up to Route 66, across the Texas Panhandle (a fast, unremarkable 540km drive on the US287), you’ll hit your first port of call, McLean. McLean gives you a sharp lesson on the downsides of the US interstate system. The I-40 highway is just 2km from the town centre, but it may as well be thousands. McLean is a living fossil, yet it’s clinging on and the Cactus Inn is an original Route 66 motel that is clean and spacious. It’s also close to the town’s

best restaurant, the Red River Steakhouse (redriversteakhouse.com).

Next morning, it’s time to get back on the Mother Road and head west. Route 66 sits mostly south of the vampiric I-40 on the 120km stretch to Amarillo, but you have to keep your eyes peeled – Route 66 tends to meander without warning. Amarillo’s Route 66-themed 13-block historic district is worth some of your time. Grab brunch at Ye Olde Pancake Station (pancakestation.com) and pootle around the antiques stores before heading west again. Around 15 minutes on, Cadillac Ranch is unmissable a public art installation of 10 graffiti-coated Cadillacs, tail up in the dirt. A n hour from the glitz of Los Angeles – the city of Angels where aspiring starlets clamour to be

granted their silver-screen wings – the only spotlight that Newport Beach cares about is the Sun. To call this piece of southern Orange County merely ‘laid-back’ would be an insult to flip flops and an affront to sun-loungers; if The O.C. was seated, it might just slide off its chair. The only thing that gets worked up around here is the fizzing Pacific Ocean that rasps against the shore, probably jealous at being limited from seeping inland to enjoy the cultural-fruits.

It needn’t be. The sea dominates this SoCal landscape and commands your gaze at least ten times a day: with the mesmerising daily performance of sunrise and sunset; when someone hollers after spotting a pod of the dozen whale species that often surface off the coast; when a thumping wave thuds against a rock-face and sends a firework of spray skywards; when a brave boarder acrobatically slices through the surf.

“You’ve brought the weather with you

from Dubai!” says… just about every resident who enthusiastically grips my handshake and learns my point of origin. This is Californian charm at its apex, because the region is known for sensational climes, clocking an average temperature of 21°C. I’ve never felt so uptight or British (or un-informed) as when immersed in this mellow world: locals beam megawatt smiles while imparting an arsenal of meticulous knowledge, melting each sentence with an easy American accent; executives with Hollywood-sounding names slip into self-assured patter about the weather, about historic details, or about themselves. And even those you don’t engage in conversation – the toned, sun-kissed surfers who lug multicoloured surfboards across the intersection on their way to the beach – look like background extras from Baywatch. It feels like everyone here is comfortable in their own skin, damn healthy, and blissfully unaware of their own arresting charm. If Los Angeles is ‘look at me!!’, then Laguna Beach is ‘oh, that incredible view? The

delicious fare? The relaxed aura? We didn’t like to mention…’

The area – located in the heart of Southern California, sandwiched between San Diego and Los Angeles counties – has its own measure of this charm, and it’s best to focus on Laguna Beach, Dana Point (7 miles southeast), and Newport Beach with Balboa Island (just 9 miles northwest). Within this radius is all the geographic richness you’d ever need, from a region whose identity is formed not only through its coastline but its buildings. Cruising along the main streets of Laguna Beach you’ll witness the mish-mash. The early 1900s bore the low-pitched roofs of the spacious California Craftsman style, and poured around these are large-porch bungalows from the 1930s, the minimalist (and indigenous) beach cottages, provincial and Mediterranean-inspired period houses, and modern, art deco colours from post-40s.

The patchwork of architectural styles seems chaotic, creating a quirky blend of structures that are entirely unique but somehow, side-by-side, just fit, and there’s

For example, Dawson Cole Fine Art has its sculptures by Richard MacDonald, Adam Neeley Fine Art Jewellery has wedding bands, necklaces and baubles, the JoAnne Artman Gallery impresses with its modern contemporary displays, and Kush Fine Art is where surrealistic art reigns.

Surf and art are the folksy influences, but wealth does not surrender its throne. It’s abundant in the plentiful moored, parked and multi-storey possessions: nowhere more so than Newport Harbour, where glitz cedes to discreet taste. I board an electric-powered Duffy (each with a creative, cutesy name like She’s N Charge, Current Love and Watt Ever), and the tour-guide Reilly slinks the vessel noiselessly past all manner of water vehicles in the harbour; whopping yachts, gleaming catamarans, and small boats that barely bob in our gentle wake. Here you’ll see the waterfront mansions of high-powered citizens-past and present, with the most prominent perhaps being John Wayne: The Duke’s abode is resplendent (more true comfort than True Grit) while his 136-footer The Wild Goose is still in residence. You’re in the romantic water-playground of the rich and famous now, where Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall played out many loved-up hours aboard his yachts moored at Newport Bay – celebrity name-drops are commonplace, but they’re uttered out of pride more than boast because their aura only enhances The O.C.’s mystique. This was ‘where to be seen’ circa-1940, where Hollywood’s finest would vacation, making it a thriving social hub with plenty of influence – the stately Harborside Ballroom, built in 1906, helped establish the development and popularity of what is now Newport Beach, as many famous big bands from yesteryear performed there including Stan Kenton and Harry James. Make no mistake though: this may be a region made glorious by its past, but it is not caught living in it. After all, you can take a Segway tour along the beach frontage. Very 2016.

As the gentle water-journey continues, its 3pm (a full 12 hours behind UAE-time), the sun is doing its best toasting, the breeze strikes the right gentle note, and even the seagulls shun exertion and hitch a cheeky ride on the bow. Sea lions lollop uninvited onto the sterns of berthed boats, arfing loudly to penetrate your shut-eyed

daydream, but serenity wins and there’s a legitimate confession of “I could definitely live here.” (You can. Orange County Visitors Association and Sotheby’s have tailored ‘Own a Piece of a Paradise’ for a blossoming Middle East market. It enables visitors to become residents and call this locality ‘home’ with a piece of prime property).

Back on dry land, the tidy three-blocks of downtown Balboa Island are pure charm; mom and pop stores still family-owned by new generations, with a US Post Office outlet on Marine Ave. which looks every inch the neighbourhood bastion of a proud national institution. You get a well-kempt slice of back-to-the-future, with stores and homes that time forgot… until you recall the multi-million dollar sums that these abodes command, and realise that real estate prices have little regard for the past.

Everywhere you tread in The O.C., heritage is preserved, nature’s enjoyed, while grace and charm is embedded in the DNA. It’s why those looking for style and sophistication should not skip when reading the opening sell on its tourism website

Sure, for many, the allure of a long-haul flight descending into LAX is to hit Space Mountain, see the Hollywood Hills, gorge at the Hard Rock Cafe and tread the stars on the Walk of Fame along the Boulevard. But trust me, the real appeal lies on the coast, half a world away in high-class Orange County. It’s away from traffic jams and billboards, waking up to fresh sea air, planting footprints on untouched morning sand under the watch of a pelican swooping for his first fish of the day. It’s at night on a patch of shoreline, marshmallows toasting over a fire-pit, with the soundtrack of crashing waves, gazing at LA’s other stars in the night-sky above. That’s where the 14-hour flight time melts from memory, and The O.C. becomes Oh wow.
