The sobriquets roll so easily off the tongue: The Big Apple, Beantown, The O.C., The ATL, the Aloha and Lone Star States... they’re memorable because the USA has eternal exploratory allure. Be it your first, tenth or thirtieth trip, you never cease discovering, and with each piece of the colossal continent possessing its own personality, you wonder if you ever really know America.

Our ‘Destination’ stories in June are dedicated to the USA because not only is it a goldmine of travel-tale inspiration, but it is becoming easier than ever to fly there direct. Airlines in the region have set their sights on dedicated daily routes that criss-cross to major U.S. hubs, making the adventures in this issue totally attainable.

Novelist James T. Farrell wrote, “America is so vast that almost everything said about it is likely to be true, and the opposite is probably equally true.” Which on the one hand torpedoes the credibility of our articles (thanks James), but on the other, is reason to give in to temptation and find your very own USA.

London, United KingdomWhile you don’t really need a reason to head to Blighty’s historic capital, a fortnight of Centre Court action and strawberries with cream seems like the perfect time to explore wider London. Wimbledon – the oldest grand slam in tennis with a history dating back to 1887 – takes place from June 27 to July 10 and the famous tournament promises world-class entertainment on and off court. Join the fun on ‘Henman Hill’, catch a glimpse of the monarchy in their Royal Box and keep an eye out for Rufus the hawk, Wimbledon’s unofficial mascot who flies around the grounds every morning before the tournament begins. Away from the tennis, June in London has plenty to keep you entertained with the Queen’s official birthday and the Trooping the Colour ceremony, the foodie-delight that is Taste of London and (hopefully) sunny afternoons to make the most of the city’s popular hops gardens.

Mentawai Islands, IndonesiaLocated off the coast of West Sumatra’s Padang, the Mentawai Islands are not only one of the most isolated places in Indonesia, they also boast some of the world’s best surf. From swells that seemingly emerge out of nowhere to extremely rippable lefts paired with remarkably consistent carves – it’s one of the ocean’s biggest playing fields. Back on dry land, base yourself at Kandui Villas, a wonderful eco-friendly resort from where you can immerse yourself in a world of lush rainforests and tropical jungles – keep an eye out for the rare monogamous leaf monkey. Siberut is the largest of the islands and home to the majority of the Mentawai people, known for their decorative tattoos and nomadic way of life. Trek deep into the jungle and witness tribal traditions before tucking into a feast of frogs cooked in bamboo and ripe durian fruits plucked from the tree. It’s a memory worth making. kanduivillas.com

GlobetrotterHere’s what’s hot in travel this

month…

June 2016World Traveller

All eyes are on the Place VendÔme this month as the legendary Ritz Paris opens

its doors after a four year, USD227 million renovation. It’s been the setting for world events galore and played host to countless

luminaries including Marcel Proust, Ernest Hemingway and Princess Diana; the much-anticipated reopening is sure to enthral. French designer Thierry W

Despont has honoured the hotel’s history and retained a sense of familiarity, coupled

with some impressive additions like the palatial gardens, terraces with retractable roofs, and an underground VIP tunnel to deter paparazzi. Guests can take part in a cooking class at the prestigious Ecole Ritz

Escoffier, enjoy a drink in the legendary Bar Hemingway and relax in The Ritz Club, home to the world’s first-ever Chanel spa in honour of the fashion mogul who called the

hotel home for 37 years.

Something Special: Live it up like a Fitzgerald by checking into the 1,377sq.ft. suite named after the author who defined the jazz age and spent many a

day at the Ritz with his wife Zelda and close friend, Hemingway. With truly stunning

GlastonburyWhat began as a party on a farm has evolved into one of the world’s biggest festivals and it’s one that gets bigger and braver every year. On from June 22-26, headliners include Muse, Adele, Coldplay, Ellie Goulding and ZZ Top. In a humanitarian nod, the Syrian National Orchestra will also take to the stage. Away from the music, soak up the fantastic atmosphere in rural England – just don’t forget your wellington boots. glastonburyfestivals.co.uk

Festival DreamsMusic fans rejoice: June’s blue skies, sunshine-y days and fine temperatures mean festival season is here, here are some of our favourites...

The Governors BallThe Big Apple struggled for years to find its footing on the festival circuit but those days are over as The Governors Ball returns from June 3-5 on Randall’s Island Park. Bask in the sun as The Killers, Beck, Kanye West and The Strokes take to the stage. This year, organisers have teamed up with Hotels for Hope, so if you decide to sleep over you’ll also be making a contribution to the charity which supports families of New York police and firefighters killed in action.governorsballmusicfestival.com

St. Kitts FestivalTropical rainforests? Check. Palm-fringed beaches? Check. A first-class music festival? Check. From June 23-25 the curtain is up on what is quite possibly the world’s most tropical music festival. See the likes of 50 Cent, Damian Marley and Morgan Heritage perform in this Caribbean spectacular. Away from the festival, islanders will be in party mode so go visit a characterful bar, enjoy a pleasantly warm swim or simply enjoy seeing a bit more of this eclectic island. stkittsmusicfestival.net

Ultra KoreaUltra Music Festivals can be found in various locations around the globe, all of which are offshoots of the original Miami-based event. First on the playlist this year is South Korea where revellers will descend upon Seoul from June 10-12 to see some of the biggest players in electronic dance music perform. With names like Avicci, Axwell & Ingrosso, Deadmau5, Martin Garrix and Afrojack headlining, it’s set to be a truly epic weekend. umfkorea.com

MY CITY

Moscow, Russia

Moscow is such a lively city and it’s important to get up early so you have time to see as much as possible. Breakfast at Bosco Café is a great reason to jump out of bed; it’s a really cheerful Italian restaurant with the most grandiose views of the Red Square; great for a morning coffee.

I always recommend that visitors who don’t have copious amounts of time should take a city tour, so that they’re able to enjoy Moscow’s fantastic architecture. If you’re an art lover like me, the Tretyakov Gallery is an absolute must. It’s an incredible museum about the history of Russian art and its permanent exhibition showcasing

early twentieth-century masterpieces is unlike any other. You can also catch a guided tour nearby, which will take you through the Rem Koolhaas-designed Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious dinner at the museum’s excellent café. The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is great for those looking for peace and quiet. The museum’s ‘babushkas’ will shush anybody speaking louder than a whisper!

I usually stay at the St. Regis Moscow Nikolskaya or the Four Seasons Hotel. Both offer luxurious stays and are only a few minutes away from the bustling heart of historic Moscow.

The most memorable place you’ll visit is the arty and bohemian Red October Island: an old chocolate factory in the middle of the city’s river has been transformed into an isolated island of culture and entertainment. You can find everything from galleries and boutiques

to restaurants and bars. The Bontempi Restaurant and Strelka Bar have picturesque terraces with stunning views of the river and skyline across the water. All the bars in the affluent residential area, Patriarshiye Ponds, are also fabulous.

A lot of people don’t know that Moscow has over 440 museums with art collections so vast and diverse that they can easily be compared to the most famous in the world. Also, many cities rightfully envy Moscow for it numerous public parks. The oldest, Aleksandrovsky Garden, was established in the early nineteenth century.

Those with cash to splash should head to nata4tsum at TsUM (a department store), or Kamergersky Lane for the latest collection by RUBAN – my favourite Russian designer. Afterwards, treat yourself at Dr. Zhivago Restaurant next to Hotel National for excellent modern Russian cuisine, partnered with splendid views of the Moscow Kremlin.

Rob Arrow is a product manager at dnata Travel and a self-confessed hotel geek. With nearly a decade of experience in the luxury travel industry, Rob loves nothing more than talking hotels and discovering destinations. His favourite country is Lebanon, his treasured city’s Los Angeles, and his dream is to own a boutique retreat in the Italian Alps

Ask theEXPERT

Q. With Ramadan being observed, which destinations are on your radar and prove popular at this time?A. This is a unique year for travel because schools break in Ramadan and the two Eid holidays pretty much fall within the time that many people are enjoying an escape from the GCC heat. Right now it’s important to get that big key holiday in place, so why not choose to visit the East or West Coast of the USA? Summer is a wonderful time to relax on the streets of LA and take some time on the coast around Newport Beach, delve into the Napa Valley or take a drive down the Big Sur. Scotland is a wonderful part of the UK in which to vacation (in the warm summer months, especially), with

the sun hardly setting the further north you travel. In France, travel down to the Cote D’Azur and enjoy some time in the choice de jour of European families. Other trending explorations are in completely new regions. Azerbaijan (specifically Baku) is increasingly popular, and five-night tours of Georgia’s stunning countryside are being booked more and more, as is the opportunity to enjoy the music scene in the rejuvenated districts of Belgrade in Serbia. Alternatively, head away from land regions and take a yacht around the coast of Croatia or the luxurious small Balkan nation of Montenegro. Greece is another destination offering a mix of sea, sun and culture. As author Andre Gide once said, “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”

Q. Families often book rooms when going away, but what are the benefits of opting for a suite? Which are the standout suites you recommend trying? A. A family trip is the time to enjoy each other’s company but we also want a bit of space to relax. Suites enable space to be used as a family area in the daytime and an elegant retreat for adults at night. The extra cost of the suite experience can sometimes be more prudent than interconnecting rooms or a Junior Suite plus a room. Once deciding to invest in a suite (with all the

fantastic extras including club lounge access, dedicated car services, high-tech in-room amenities etc), where does one go? The best family suites can be found at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa. These rooms are designed specifically for the family in mind. If you wish to be somewhere closer to attractions then the Residence and Two Bedroom Villas at the Anantara Layan Phuket Resort are perfect for what you might need as a family to spend a great time together, or even just relax in your private pool together. It needn’t only be at a resort where you find great family friendly suites. The Oberoi, Gurgaon is a perfect place for the family to explore Delhi from, and they offer style, comfort and huge-suites (with generous-sized bathrooms too).

In the USA you will find amazing family suites: at Four Seasons Resort Orlando Walt DisneyWorld, you can even watch the daily fireworks display from your own terrace. Some hotels now even offer twin centre suite experiences. St Regis, which is opening gorgeous new hotels in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi, offers an amazing combination deal so you can enjoy the city and relax on the beautiful beach. If you simply want to enjoy a weekend in the Middle East region, Zaray Nurai Island offers a stunning luxury experience just off the coast of Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi. It’s a must visit.

eateries from around the globe

El Aljibe, Havana, CubaOrder: Roasted chicken with rice and beansEl Aljibe features a 62-year-old secret recipe for roast chicken that has attracted the likes of Hollywood stars Jack Nicholson and former President Jimmy Carter. It’s a great place for Creole food and serves excellent fries and fresh-baked breads. I trained at this restaurant as a graduate in Cuba, so it has sentimental value.

Red Farm, New York, USAOrder: Crispy duck with pickled vegetablesThis is a hip restaurant, which is very popular amongst important industry people in NYC. It serves mouthwatering ‘farm to table’ dim sum and Chinese food and always pushes the boundaries when it comes to creative recipes and presentation. Plus, with two locations (529 Hudson and 2170 Broadway), there’s no excuse to miss out.

El Palacio de Los Jugos, Miami, USAOrder: Roasted meat with sweet plantains The restaurant’s name literally translates to ‘The Juice Palace’ and this place is exactly that – one of the best spots in town for fresh, natural juice. It’s an open-air restaurant that features three main areas: a juice bar; sandwich counter; and a hot-food area that serves wonderful Cuban cuisine.

Pollen Street Social, London, EnglandOrder: Goat cheese churros with roasted apple, granola clustersI have dined here a couple of times and love Chef Jason Atherton’s work. The restaurant is a quirky hybrid between contemporary bistro and fine dining with impeccable service. The food is truly amazing. His version of goat cheese churros the time that I visited was impressive.

Wafi Gourmet, Abu Dhabi, UAEOrder: Tagine Barbook (Moroccan lamb cooked in spices, plum and sesame)I love Middle Eastern food. During our opening phase of Asia de Cuba, I used to visit Wafi Gourmet frequently – it’s located inside Nation Galleria. What I truly appreciate about the venue is its consistency and freshness; it’s my place to go for comfort food in Abu Dhabi.

• Don’t miss Ljubljana was crowned ‘Green Capital of Europe’ in 2016: a fact best proven at its oldest scientific institution, the Botanical Gardens. The 2-hectare protected landscape dates back 200 years, with 4,500 species of native and foreign plants calling it home; open 7am-8pm daily throughout June.

Spotlight On LjubljanaSlovenia is making travel waves of late; its leafy capital is the best start to an exploration of minimalist design and historical riches

See and Do Ljubljanica RiversideThe river is the lifeblood of a vibrant scene. Cyclists traverse the riverside, patrons frequent the array of cafes, there’s a Sunday Market, and boat tours along the waters are popular: the LakerCraft trip takes 45 minutes, passing the many spectacular bridges and Baroque structures, heading for Špica before gliding by the quaint Old Town.

MuseumsTwo culture gems (in a city chock-full of art galleries and exhibitions) are the Jurij Kobe-designed National Museum of Contemporary History in must-visit Tivoli Park, and that of Contemporary Art, in the history-rich Museum Quarter.

Ljubljana CastleTake one of several paths or the funicular from Old Town to the top of Castle Hill (which guarantees a great city vantage). A huge collection of antiquities reside at this fifteenth-century former fortress, set in idyllc grounds – perfect for a stroll.

Stay Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel LjubljanaClose to Metelkova, the property is ideal for those looking to plunder the 450-store BTC City Ljubljana for shopping indulgences, and is within walking distance of Atlantis Water Park (home to Sauna Land – the wellness industry thrives in Slovenia).

Grand Hotel UnionA premier location (with great views) in the pedestrianised city centre makes this a top hotel pick for royal visitors and tourists alike. Art Nouveau-styled spacious rooms entice, and the Grand Café in the lobby is a popular coffee haunt in its own right.

Eat and DrinkSpajzaHigh-class Slovenian and international dishes await here; they call it ‘home-cooking with verve’, and mains such as Venison fillet with blueberries and Sebass fillet with fennel and saffron sauce certainly tantalise. June presents the perfect weather for romantic dining in the stunning courtyard.

Restavracija StrelecWith its prominent location in the archers’ tower of Ljubljana Castle, the modern-dining menu of chef Igor Jagodic is worthy of the hilltop ascent. Locally-sourced ingredients inspire dishes like ‘The Hunters of Ljubljana Sometimes Aim Well Too’: vension back, buckwheat rolls stuffed with duck liver, and fir tree foam.

KraševkaNamed after the Slovenian region of Kras this is a treasure trove of tasty delicacies, harbouring homemade goodies from jams, honey, vinegar, dried meats and cheeses, to olive oil from Istria and local grape.

My favourite city for shopping is London, which is home to the most luxurious shops and landmark stores. I’m personally a huge fan of all the vintage markets, whether it’s the hundreds of stalls in Camden (camdenmarket.net) or the East End flea market Bricklane (visitbricklane.org).

I never fail to take a trip to the multilevel fashion retail store Dover Street Market (doverstreetmarket.com), while the Opening Ceremony (openingceremony.com) is the the best for new designer labels and ready-to-wear pieces. I also love Selfridges (selfridges.com), but who doesn’t? This big-name emporium hosts the most desirable brands and contemporary designers. Liberty London (liberty.co.uk) is a fashionista’s dream for cosmetics, soaps and candles, and Portobello Market (portobelloroad.co.uk) is brilliant for oddities and opulent antiques.

The ACE Hotel (acehotel.com) and Hoxton Hotel (thehoxton.com) are my favourite places to stay after a long day browsing the shops. They’re both conveniently located close to Shoreditch, which has plenty of vintage boutiques. It’s also near Columbia Road Flower Market (columbiaroad.info) and the picturesque Hackney Canal. The latter is beautifully picturesque and perfect for a relaxing summer stroll.

Bargain hunting works up an appetite and I always grab a bite to eat at Farm Girl (thefarmgirl.co.uk) or HIX Soho (hixrestaurants.co.uk). I also frequent Granger & Co (grangeandco.com) but anywhere that serves traditional British tea cakes, shortbread biscuits and, of course, an afternoon cream tea suits me just fine! Velaa Private Island, Maldives This pretty Indian Ocean resort is a turtle-shaped ‘Island for the Senses’, and a first-class sensory experience awaits within its beautiful spa. The main draw is My Blend by Clarins, one of only four such enclaves in the world. The concept involves specific

analysis of your lifestyle and skin condition, using high-definition cameras and a UV

filter. From the diagnosis, a resident beauty coach administers a formula based on

relevant products from the Clarins range, to give you the best regenerating facial

you’ll ever have. velaaprivateisland.com

A l Waha, Al Bandar and Al Husn: a hospitality triumvirate, each with their own appeal, yet in harmony

present the ultimate hotel and resort destination in the Sultanate of Oman. It is safe to say that this is a stunning destination in its own right, yet also serves as a way to get the best out of a memorable Muscat travel experience, be it energised or relaxed.

As summer staycation season drifts into full view, it’s little wonder that families, couples and luxury-seekers alike head to the resort that juts proudly into the Gulf of Oman. Let’s look at the three hotels in turn, and what each offers.

The mere road access to Al Waha sets an impressive scene, as you drive through

a man-made tunnel that cuts through a mountain, and the stunning impressions continue within the hotel and its amenities. This is the most family-friendly of the trio, and there are a plethora of activities to keep the little ones entertained all holiday long. Indoor and outdoor pools are enhanced by Cool and Adventure zones, as well as chilled children’s pools, a lazy river, and SplashPad. Parents, meanwhile, can kick back at a hotel that resplendently lives up to its name, where several pools combine to form a serene oasis.

In a way, the deluxe treat that is Al Bandar can be considered the centrepoint for the three hotels, being as it exudes a town aura inspired by Muscat of old. Couples and those seeking a weekend

getaway head to ‘The Town’ for its ornate architecture and to partake in a roaring array of watersports, plus another factor that magnetises are its 22 dining venues, which serve up unique and inventive offerings. Bait al Bahr, for example, has implemented its Rooted in Nature menu, which is attention-grabbing not only for the delicious of the seafood but also because of a promise that suppliers of the ingredients are verified, sourced locally and comply to the resort’s sustainability requirements.

The jewel in the crown is the palatial Al Husn, which befits its ‘castle’ moniker and affords discerning couples (-only) the highest level of service, amenities and privileges. This is a supreme luxury escape,

DestinationsNew York & Hawaii

E veryone says it, and it’s true – your wedding day really does fly by. After a ceremony that passed in a blur, my

new wife and I had the last (and, don’t tell her, most exciting) part still to come. We’d spent weeks planning our honeymoon getaway, to a destination that for most still feels like a step too far – all the way to the USA, then double the distance to reach Hawaii? Even for a honeymoon, that’s a lot of plane travel. We found out that getting to paradise was worth every minute in the air.

The usual way to reach Hawaii, after a whirlwind wedding in the UK, is to fly to the west coast of the US, normally exploring lively San Francisco or Los Angeles before a short hop over the Pacific. We’re not really ones for normal, so we decide our stop in the mainland US would be New York City.

The first perk of honeymooning is a Virgin Atlantic upgrade to Premium Economy, which is a revelation. It may not sound like much, but over the course of nine hours the more comfortable seats and service really make a difference – I’ve been in upper class on some airlines that felt less luxurious. After touching down, a yellow cab takes us from JFK through the city’s endlessly breathtaking skyline to our destination, The Peninsula 5th Avenue.

A perennial favourite among business travellers and holidaymakers due to its proximity to New York’s unrivalled shopping as well as Central Park, the friendly staff and personalised touches (like a complimentary chauffeur-driven MINI

Part One:

New YoRk

Cooper S Clubman for suite-staying guests) put The Peninsula’s hospitality on a level all of its own.

Even after several visits, there’s plenty that New York can offer. Sombre reflection can be found at the new memorial museum dedicated to the events of September 11, 2001. Neatly split into two distinct sections – a timeline of the events on that terrible day, and how New York and the US as a whole has rebuilt – the memorial offers a poignant and humanised view of the day’s loss. Thoughtfully designed on the ground where the Twin Towers once stood, it may not seem like an obvious destination for tourists, but as a museum and a memorial, it is both inspiring and humbling. The newly-opened Freedom Tower, which stands alongside it, is a symbol of hope, with the observation deck a new rival to compete with the Empire State Building for views of the famous old city.

Somewhat emotionally drained, a light-hearted walk is just what the doctor ordered – so we meander from the south of Manhattan to the west, trying to find the High Line. This overground garden is built on an old railway line, and runs for several blocks up and down the Meatpacking District, and on our visit it’s densely populated with office workers basking in the unseasonably warm spring weather. In a city as busy as New York, it’s an incredible oasis of greenery and even tranquillity, and has a thriving market of coffee stalls and vendors selling t-shirts and postcards.

Nearby is the hipsters’ paradise, Chelsea Market, a bright and spacious indoor market that makes you feel at least 50% cooler just by dint of being inside it.

New York is truly a city for sports nuts. It’s home to the official headquarters of the NBA, NFL, NHL Major League Baseball and even its newest obsession, Major League Soccer. Venerable sporting venues like Madison Square Garden and Brooklyn’s

Barclays Centre are tourist destinations in their own right, but depending on what sport you follow you’ll need to book your trip accordingly. Baseball season begins in April, and basketball starts in October. In early March it’s ice hockey time, with New York’s rival sides the Rangers and the Islanders doing battle with each other and local enemies from Pittsburgh and New Jersey. We call in at an Islanders game to catch some of the action, as well as buy foam fingers and novelty hats – and as an alternative to a Broadway show, a night on the ice offers just as much drama, with the home side running out with a narrow 1-0 victory. Battling jetlag, the main event of the honeymoon is still to come. Paradise is just an 11-hour flight away…

The overground garden, built on an old railway line, is an oasis of tranquillity

A s you’ll be on the road quite a lot on Hawaii’s Big Island, a fun game to pass the time is counting tourists

driving identical Jeep Wranglers. The island is 150km across, and it takes around four hours to circumnavigate, so there’s plenty of opportunity to play – although after seeing our 50th, we decided that we had more important things to watch out for. It’s a good thing too, as the roadside scenery is utterly spectacular. On the west, where the gorgeous Fairmont Orchid lies at sea level, it’s all sunshine, palm trees and volcanic scrubland. The further east you drive, the gradual elevation as you pass over one of the island’s two active volcanoes puts you up in the clouds and into the rain. Twenty minutes after leaving blazing sunshine with stunning views over the Pacific, you’re enveloped in fog, rain battering your Jeep and imposing jungle greenery on all sides. If it looks like the set of Jurassic Park, that’s because it is – the 1993 blockbuster was filmed here, and for all the world you’d be forgiven for expecting a T-Rex to come crashing out of the foliage. Big Island has ten different microclimates, making it meteorologically unique.

There are plenty of diversions off the main roads. If you drive around the island in a vaguely clockwise fashion, you’ll pass through the town of Waimea, home to our favourite restaurant on the island, Pau’s Pizzeria. Inside is captivating artwork from local collage artist Margo Ray, as well as fresh seafood and much more. Suitably fuelled, the journey resumes. The first stop

we make is one of the best of the entire trip, at the Waipio Valley lookout in the Hamakua district. Big Island is full of signs that point out scenic areas, but Waipio is one of the more noteworthy. It was the capital and home to many early Hawaiian kings in the early days of Hawaii’s settlement, and was the boyhood home of the legendary warrior King Kamehameha I. Even today, among the waterfalls and taro plantations in the valley below, a few dozen native Hawaiians still live. Set into the valley’s furthest wall is the Big Island’s tallest waterfall, Hiilawe Falls, which gushes down over 1300 feet.

Unfortunately, this incredible specimen isn’t possible to access by helicopter, since it’s almost always shrouded in fast-moving cloud and mist. Your best bet is to continue further east to the town of Hilo, which sends choppers up daily despite being the wettest city in the whole of the United States, enduring up to 156 inches of rain per year. A flight with Blue Hawaiian tours promises spectacular volcano and waterfall views, so we eagerly sign up and take our seats at the front of the helicopter. Our pilot Coleen, a cheerful Idahoan who’s lived in Hawaii for six years, keeps up a fascinating commentary as we hover over Mauna Kea, the highest mountain – and highest active volcano – in Hawaii. Contrary to what the guidebooks display, there aren’t geysers spouting jets of molten lava at the peak, but the way the lava moves is still interesting. The red-hot magma lies just beneath a thin crust of cooled rock, which slowly spreads

For our final days we make the relatively short drive to Hawi, at the northernmost tip of the island. This hip enclave is strewn with cute boutique stores, amazing restaurants including Sushi Rocks (the nagiri with freshly caught seafood cannot be beat) and wonderfully distinct houses. Some ten miles further up the highway is the Pololu Valley lookout, similar to Waipio Valley but with a pleasant hiking path that takes you down to the black sand beach,

downwards underneath the mountain, in directions that are impossible to predict. Property prices at the foot of Mauna Kea are the lowest anywhere in Hawaii because at any point Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire, might decide to send an incredibly slow-moving avalanche of lava in its direction, inexorably destroying everything in its stately path. I ask Coleen whether you can walk around on the grey crust below us. “You could once,” she replies wryly, going on to explain that in places the crust is just inches thick – which would mean a swift descent into a lake of molten lava. After a loop around Mauna Kea’s peak – where a hole in the crust allows a glimpse of the roiling, neon orange furnace beneath – Coleen swoops over a series of glittering waterfalls, before touching back down at Hilo airport. We get the chance to see some of Pele’s work in person at the nearby Volcano National Park, where visitors can walk through a ‘lava tube,’ one of the subterranean tunnels made by flowing lava hundreds of years ago that’s since cooled and solidified into something safe enough to explore. There’s also plenty of information to be found about Hawaii’s volcanic past, formed from fire in the Pacific Ocean.

Among the waterfalls and taro plantations in the valley, a few native Hawaiians still live

popular with surfers. Don’t miss the statue of King Kamehameha on the way, either – another fascinating diversion on an island stuffed full of them.

Hawaii is perfect for those that want to explore, or just unwind on a hammock enjoying sunshine and birdsong. As long as you can stop counting Jeeps, that is. Paradise well and truly found.

Live the dream: From dusty, cactus-spiked deserts to towering, flat-topped mesas, monumental canyons and cattle-cropped prairies, this road trip has it all.

Make it happen: Leave Vegas on the I-515, blasting over the Route 93 bypass and into Arizona, where jagged canyons peel away to reveal a blazing swathe of scrub-speckled desert, littered with the skeletons of disused filling stations. By the time you hit the Grand Canyon National Park, the barren flats have wrinkled into hills thick with juniper and pine. The pick of the hitching posts here is Bright Angel Lodge (grandcanyonlodges.com), a cluster of cute log cabins a ten minute walk from the canyon’s edge. For a break from the wheel, Maverick Helicopters (maverickhelicopter.com; tours from USD289) will take you on a 50-minute spin that starts with a stomach-

orchard-filled valley of Fruita feels like a hallucination after so much desert. Nearby Torrey is a cowboy town, and the Western-themed Broken Spur Inn (brokenspurinn.com) revels in it.

While the buffalo off Route 9 are a vision from another time, Bryce’s Canyon’s bizarre stalagmites of rock and Zion NationalPark’s neon-green cave pools are land-forms from another planet. The Cable Mountain Lodge in Springdale is a good base (cablemountainlodge.com)

How long you need: Take a couple of weeks to do it justice.

Handy steer: Don’t forget to keep your tank filled. You’ll be driving for hours and most petrol stations are unmanned in low season (November-March) and many automated pumps won’t take a credit card.

DestinationsUS Road Trips

Live the dream: Not so very long ago, you’d have had to do this road trip by boat. Remember although the brilliant, smooth Overseas Highway makes it easy to forget the Keys are a string of islands so distinct from mainland America that residents call themselves the ‘Conch Republic’ and have an annual water fight with US Border Patrol. This wild and watery odyssey is all about taking your time. Sure, the drive from shabbily charming Key Largo (nearest to the mainland) to kooky Key West can be done in two hours but why would you? Even locals don’t hit the speed limit and any rookie mistakes you make will be dismissed with a friendly wave (horns don’t get honked in the Keys).

Make it happen: Spend at least one night in Key Largo. It’s a delightfully dog-eared pitstop, where not a split second of the classic namesake movie was filmed, though it doesn’t stop bar owners displaying life-size models of Humphrey Bogart… Kona Kai (konakairesort.com) is a collection of cottages on the coast among botanical gardens: the style is ‘Flori-bbean’ fabulous.

Next day, get southerly and sultry. The Keys are eccentric, gentrified, and hick in parts; it’s undeniable as you drive through understated Tavernier, barefoot-bling Islamorada, then bucket-and-spade Marathon. Stop at Robbie’s Marina (marker 77.5) to feed the giant tarpon fish a USD3 thrill. If you want to stay over (there’s big-game-fishing, snorkelling and dolphin experiences in these here parts), check in at retro-cool Amara Cay.

Seven Mile Bridge starts right after Marathon – a concrete curve of engineering

mastery that runs alongside the crumbling 1912 original, now used as a jogging track and fishermen’s drop-off point. From here to Key West unravels the most spectacular stretch of the Overseas Highway, with the epic Atlantic on one side, mangroves, marshy forests and simple stilted homes on the other. Stop for a swim in Bahia Honda State Park, where you’ll find the Keys’ best beach aim to be here for low tide if you can, as it means more sandy space for picnics.

Key West is the star of the show, with its glorious (but not overly groomed) historic district. Stay at the white clapboard Marker (themarkerkeywest.com). Time to tick off your Keys fantasies: Key lime pie at Kermit’s (200 Elizabeth St and 802 Duval St); conch fritters (anywhere); and a stroke of one of Hemingway’s 60 cats (his home is now a museum; hemingwayhome.com). Then join the nightly sunset party on Mallory Square there’s live music, cheesy performance artists, and a rowdy communal ‘whoop!’ as the red fireball drops into the sea. So why do the Keys feel so different, so magical? Never forget: on Key West, you’re nearer to Cuba than to the closest Walmart.

Handy steer: Don’t be put off driving a convertible for sensible reasons, such as cost, weather or security. American models can be had dirt-cheap. Meanwhile, the slow speed of the Keys means your tyres never get a blowout, while modern, bigger boots hold two suitcases – practical.

How long you need: You could make this a dawn-’til-dusk day trip from Miami, but better to take a week and see it slo-mo.

Live the dream: The waves are crashing just off your right shoulder; the sky is the bluest you’ve ever seen; cyclists are taking the route by your side; and the sun looks like pure gold. It’s almost as if you’re seeing everything through a magic lens but this is just Pacific Highway Coast sea-spray.

Make it happen: You’ll begin to get a feel for this iconic road in the two hours it takes you to get from San Francisco to Santa Cruz (travel north to south as it means the coast will always be on your near side). Santa Cruz has rousing beach walks and a pretty pier. You’ll also want to stop at craggy Monterey and cutesy Carmel before you get to Big Sur, the scenic star of your trip. This is when you really understand what the Pacific Coast Highway is all about. At Big Sur the cliffs get rugged, the roads begin to snake, you drive a little higher,

San Simeon also has the best-placed chain hotel in the world – the Best Western Plus Cavalier Oceanfront Resort (bestwestern.com), which delivers five-star sunsets.

Santa Barbara is the ideal contrast it’s flashier, with lots of wineries offering tastings, plus excellent tacos (try Mony’s) and very expensive real estate. Make sure you squeeze in some surf time in Malibu, too, before you hit Los Angeles proper.

Handy steer: Big Sur deserves its hype, but hype comes with horribly expensive restaurants. Avoid the big names in favour of Big Sur Bakery, which serves rustic pizzas with roasted red peppers, micro-greens, meatballs, and other wholesomely delicious toppings well-worthy of its woodsy surroundings.

Live the dream: Ditch the filters – hit the northeast around the Fall and your photos won’t need any artificial aid to shine: those reds and yellows will glow like your screen’s on fire. And the good news is that outside autumn, you’ll get pretty picket-fence villages, creaking covered bridges, Appalachian mountains cloaked majestically in deep green forest and improbably empty blacktop right across the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire. Best of all, these aren’t the long straight stretches of tarmac you get elsewhere in the US roads up here tend to wind along the river and around the bluff. In other words, this is real, authentic driving.

Make it happen: Don’t get in a tizz about timing. The summer sun sparkles on swimmably warm lakes; winter’s as picturesquely snowy as a Christmas card; and spring zings with green leaf and meadow flower. As for Fall, it’s impossible to predict when colours will peak, but go between early September and mid-November and you’ll see something glorious. Naturally, autumn arrives at different points in different latitudes, so cruise a cross-section south to north for the full spectrum of jade greens, molten golds and fire-truck reds. Start in NYC and, amazingly, you’re just 90 minutes’ drive from the sheep-nibbled pastures and rust-coloured wooden barns of Connecticut. Route 7 will take you up through its bucolic Berkshires and Litchfield Hills; over the state line in Massachusetts, rest up for the night in the historic Red Lion Inn (redlioninn.com). Next day, keep on tootling up Route 7 ‘till you get to Bennington,

then turn right along Route 9 — the Molly Stark Trail — for one of Vermont’s classic leaf-peeping runs. You’ll weave your way through the fairy-tale woods of Green Mountain National Forest, but when you emerge an hour or two later at cutesy Wilmington, you won’t even have scratched the surface, so turn left up Route 100 along a river valley as far as Killington. It’s a ski town in winter but a great base for walks the rest of the year; stay at the cosy Snowed Inn (snowedinn.com).

Head east, next, into New Hampshire and the White Mountain National Forest, an epic expanse of beech, hemlock and birch with biblically dramatic Mount Washington in its midst. Cutting right through the thick of it is arguably the world’s best Fall-foliage drive, the Kancamagus Highway an eyes-wide-open dream of waterfalls, wooden bridges, swim-holes, switchbacks and those colours.

Overnight at the Mountain View Grand for the vistas from its veranda rocking-chairs (mountainviewgrand.com), then turn south on I-93 for a day and night lulled by the lapping wavelets of Lake Winnipesaukee in chintzy-but-charming Meredith; Church Falls is right on the water, and worth a last-night splurge (millfalls.com). You’re now just a couple of hours from Boston airport.

Handy steer: No need to waste a day getting your car back to New York at the end of your trip. Emirates serves Boston, and will fly you into one city and home from the other, while the big car-hire companies only ask for around USD60 extra for one-way rental.

How long you need: You can see a lot in four days, but you’ll want a week to breathe it all in.

Live the dream: Route 66. The Mother Road. Main Street of America. Whatever you call this slinky gal (measuring a lengthy 4,000km from start to finish), her most icon-laden stretch runs from Texas into New Mexico. Pack your camera and get ready for a road trip down memory lane.

Make it happen: Once you’ve driven from Dallas airport up to Route 66, across the Texas Panhandle (a fast, unremarkable 540km drive on the US287), you’ll hit your first port of call, McLean. McLean gives you a sharp lesson on the downsides of the US interstate system. The I-40 highway is just 2km from the town centre, but it may as well be thousands. McLean is a living fossil, yet it’s clinging on and the Cactus Inn is an original Route 66 motel that is clean and spacious. It’s also close to the town’s

best restaurant, the Red River Steakhouse (redriversteakhouse.com).

Next morning, it’s time to get back on the Mother Road and head west. Route 66 sits mostly south of the vampiric I-40 on the 120km stretch to Amarillo, but you have to keep your eyes peeled – Route 66 tends to meander without warning. Amarillo’s Route 66-themed 13-block historic district is worth some of your time. Grab brunch at Ye Olde Pancake Station (pancakestation.com) and pootle around the antiques stores before heading west again. Around 15 minutes on, Cadillac Ranch is unmissable a public art installation of 10 graffiti-coated Cadillacs, tail up in the dirt. One hour on, a neon sign that reads ‘Midpoint Café’ thrusts out above the flat Texan landscape at Adrian the cafe sits on the midpoint of Route 66 (route66midpointcafe.com). During the

route’s heyday, Midpoint operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Now it’s known for its delicious yet curiously detailed ‘ugly crust’ pies (try the Texas pecan).

The old Route 66 peters out soon after, so hop on the I-40 and hightail it 35km to Glenrio in New Mexico, the most evocative of the Route 66 ghost towns in the west. Tucumcari, a town 70km on, has thrived by embracing the Mother Road. A good place to stay is at its historic Blue Swallow Motel (blueswallowmotel.com), a restored, retro motel with a courtyard in which to enjoy the blazing sunsets.

West of Tucumcari, Route 66 becomes a dirt road, scudding desolately through beautiful juniper and mesquite landscapes and a succession of ghost towns. The haunting dead settlements of Montoya, Newkirk and Cuervo make for awesome

A n hour from the glitz of Los Angeles – the city of Angels where aspiring starlets clamour to be

granted their silver-screen wings – the only spotlight that Newport Beach cares about is the Sun. To call this piece of southern Orange County merely ‘laid-back’ would be an insult to flip flops and an affront to sun-loungers; if The O.C. was seated, it might just slide off its chair. The only thing that gets worked up around here is the fizzing Pacific Ocean that rasps against the shore, probably jealous at being limited from seeping inland to enjoy the cultural-fruits.

It needn’t be. The sea dominates this SoCal landscape and commands your gaze at least ten times a day: with the mesmerising daily performance of sunrise and sunset; when someone hollers after spotting a pod of the dozen whale species that often surface off the coast; when a thumping wave thuds against a rock-face and sends a firework of spray skywards; when a brave boarder acrobatically slices through the surf.

“You’ve brought the weather with you

from Dubai!” says… just about every resident who enthusiastically grips my handshake and learns my point of origin. This is Californian charm at its apex, because the region is known for sensational climes, clocking an average temperature of 21°C. I’ve never felt so uptight or British (or un-informed) as when immersed in this mellow world: locals beam megawatt smiles while imparting an arsenal of meticulous knowledge, melting each sentence with an easy American accent; executives with Hollywood-sounding names slip into self-assured patter about the weather, about historic details, or about themselves. And even those you don’t engage in conversation – the toned, sun-kissed surfers who lug multicoloured surfboards across the intersection on their way to the beach – look like background extras from Baywatch. It feels like everyone here is comfortable in their own skin, damn healthy, and blissfully unaware of their own arresting charm. If Los Angeles is ‘look at me!!’, then Laguna Beach is ‘oh, that incredible view? The

delicious fare? The relaxed aura? We didn’t like to mention…’

The area – located in the heart of Southern California, sandwiched between San Diego and Los Angeles counties – has its own measure of this charm, and it’s best to focus on Laguna Beach, Dana Point (7 miles southeast), and Newport Beach with Balboa Island (just 9 miles northwest). Within this radius is all the geographic richness you’d ever need, from a region whose identity is formed not only through its coastline but its buildings. Cruising along the main streets of Laguna Beach you’ll witness the mish-mash. The early 1900s bore the low-pitched roofs of the spacious California Craftsman style, and poured around these are large-porch bungalows from the 1930s, the minimalist (and indigenous) beach cottages, provincial and Mediterranean-inspired period houses, and modern, art deco colours from post-40s.

The patchwork of architectural styles seems chaotic, creating a quirky blend of structures that are entirely unique but somehow, side-by-side, just fit, and there’s

For example, Dawson Cole Fine Art has its sculptures by Richard MacDonald, Adam Neeley Fine Art Jewellery has wedding bands, necklaces and baubles, the JoAnne Artman Gallery impresses with its modern contemporary displays, and Kush Fine Art is where surrealistic art reigns.

Surf and art are the folksy influences, but wealth does not surrender its throne. It’s abundant in the plentiful moored, parked and multi-storey possessions: nowhere more so than Newport Harbour, where glitz cedes to discreet taste. I board an electric-powered Duffy (each with a creative, cutesy name like She’s N Charge, Current Love and Watt Ever), and the tour-guide Reilly slinks the vessel noiselessly past all manner of water vehicles in the harbour; whopping yachts, gleaming catamarans, and small boats that barely bob in our gentle wake. Here you’ll see the waterfront mansions of high-powered citizens-past and present, with the most prominent perhaps being John Wayne: The Duke’s abode is resplendent (more true comfort than True Grit) while his 136-footer The Wild Goose is still in residence. You’re in the romantic water-playground of the rich and famous now, where Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall played out many loved-up hours aboard his yachts moored at Newport Bay – celebrity name-drops are commonplace, but they’re uttered out of pride more than boast because their aura only enhances The O.C.’s mystique. This was ‘where to be seen’ circa-1940, where Hollywood’s finest would vacation, making it a thriving social hub with plenty of influence – the stately Harborside Ballroom, built in 1906, helped establish the development and popularity of what is now Newport Beach, as many famous big bands from yesteryear performed there including Stan Kenton and Harry James. Make no mistake though: this may be a region made glorious by its past, but it is not caught living in it. After all, you can take a Segway tour along the beach frontage. Very 2016.

As the gentle water-journey continues, its 3pm (a full 12 hours behind UAE-time), the sun is doing its best toasting, the breeze strikes the right gentle note, and even the seagulls shun exertion and hitch a cheeky ride on the bow. Sea lions lollop uninvited onto the sterns of berthed boats, arfing loudly to penetrate your shut-eyed

daydream, but serenity wins and there’s a legitimate confession of “I could definitely live here.” (You can. Orange County Visitors Association and Sotheby’s have tailored ‘Own a Piece of a Paradise’ for a blossoming Middle East market. It enables visitors to become residents and call this locality ‘home’ with a piece of prime property).

Back on dry land, the tidy three-blocks of downtown Balboa Island are pure charm; mom and pop stores still family-owned by new generations, with a US Post Office outlet on Marine Ave. which looks every inch the neighbourhood bastion of a proud national institution. You get a well-kempt slice of back-to-the-future, with stores and homes that time forgot… until you recall the multi-million dollar sums that these abodes command, and realise that real estate prices have little regard for the past.

Everywhere you tread in The O.C., heritage is preserved, nature’s enjoyed, while grace and charm is embedded in the DNA. It’s why those looking for style and sophistication should not skip when reading the opening sell on its tourism website

Sure, for many, the allure of a long-haul flight descending into LAX is to hit Space Mountain, see the Hollywood Hills, gorge at the Hard Rock Cafe and tread the stars on the Walk of Fame along the Boulevard. But trust me, the real appeal lies on the coast, half a world away in high-class Orange County. It’s away from traffic jams and billboards, waking up to fresh sea air, planting footprints on untouched morning sand under the watch of a pelican swooping for his first fish of the day. It’s at night on a patch of shoreline, marshmallows toasting over a fire-pit, with the soundtrack of crashing waves, gazing at LA’s other stars in the night-sky above. That’s where the 14-hour flight time melts from memory, and The O.C. becomes Oh wow.

WeekendsParis For All...

One Weekend For All In...ParisAs France plays host to Euro 2016 football fever, the time is ripe to narrow-down the travel essentials ofits charming capital

The romantic oneInfatuated couples watching the world go by from quaint cafes like La Fregate beside the Seine would contend that there’s no better city on Earth for romance; Paris has plenty of other aspects to stake its claim. Be inspired by The Kiss at Musée Rodin; take a night cruise along the river; pack a picnic hamper and lay down a blanket on the Champ de Mars, the green stretch of land that stretches from the icon of Paris down to École Militaire; whisper in the intimate streets of Old Paris in Le Marais district, with its historic architecture and vintage boutiques. Take a rowboat to quaint Temple Romantique upon the lake in Bois de Vincennes, or hire a nippy Vespa from Freescoot near Pont de l’Archevêché, to zip around the side-streets with your loved one, her arms wrapped around your waist. Plus there’s always room for cliché in the City of Love, and while the chance to attach a lasting love-lock to the railings of Pont des Arts is no-longer, you can still celebrate amore by ascending the Eiffel Tower; a classic glass of Alain Ducasse Selection bubbles to toast the occasion costs USD14, but memories are priceless.

The family-friendly oneDisneyland. We’ll get to other highlights, but if there is any Parisian destination certain to raise a smile among young and old alike, it’s the opportunity to see cartoon creations in Walt’s world. And while you could easily spend the entire vacation here with 2 parks, 7 hotels, a golf course and the Disney Village, limit yourself to just the one day. That way you can visit such places as Jardin d’Acclimatation; An archery range, house of mirrors, carousel, boat rides on its enchanted river, road train, farm animals roaming around waiting to be petted, and pony rides all mean there’s plenty here to enjoy all the fun of the fair. Meanwhile, tours of Musée des Arts Forains on Avenue des Terroirs de France are by appointment-only, but securing a viewing is well worth the endeavour. The private museum houses a huge collection of fairground art objects, with wonderment assured in the five unique ‘worlds’ like the Theatre of Marvels and Venetian Rooms. Art is a universal language, and though the performances at Le Théâtre des Marionnettes du Luxembourg are in French, the dastardly capers of the puppets will have the little ones squealing with delight.

Clockwise from left: Montmartre at dusk; Bridge alexandre iii on the river seine; Paris Metro sign; The Pyramid at the Louvre at night; Paris rooftops and the Eiffel Tower.

The adventurous one‘STOP. Here is the Empire of Death’, says the sign at the entrance to Les Catacombes. These under-city tunnels are cryptic in more ways than one: it’s an underground tomb where dimly-lit tours can last upto 2 hours, if you dare... Back on the surface, there are 700kms of bike tracks to traverse, and Vélib provides access to 20,000 bikes (with smaller two-wheelers for kids, too) across 1,500 stations citywide; a great portal to find thoughtfully-planned routes is freewheelingfrance.com. Staying fast-paced, running tours (helmed by experienced athlete guides) are a great way to keep fit and burn off the excess calories from last night’s sumptouous feast. In a similar vein, inline skating tours depart from close to the Bastille on a Sunday, and are suitable for beginners. Of course, worth a second mention is Disneyland for its lightning-speed rides; Space Mountain: Mission 2 and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster are can’t miss adrenaline rushes. If all else fails, climb the 284 steps of the Arc de Triomphe or, better yet, attempt to navigate the roundabout here at rush hour – a real test of nerve.

The restful oneThe acuality of getting up close to famous paintings like the Mona Lisa at the immensely iconic Louvre might not actually keep the heart-rate at resting. But the area itself (like neighbouring Tuileries Garden, with its fountains and sculptures) is truly laid-back and ideal for a stroll. For a contemporary twist on cultural appreciation, Frank Gehry designed an extraordinary space (in public park Bois de Boulogne) for Fondation Louis Vuitton. Here, the LVMH Group showcases its dedication to the arts; Daniel Buren’s 3,600-glass-piece Observatory of Light, for example, shows from now. The mention of a luxury brand may cause tremors in the wallet so be chauffeured to La Vallée Village, a chic shopping destination with your personal shopper navigating the array of Prêt-à-porter offerings. For Parisian pampering, the all-suite Spa at Mandarin Oriental has a whole host of exotic treatments (including half-day programmes), and garners top-notch reviews. Round off the evening on steps beside the river in the 5th Arr. mesmerised by tango dancers who sultry-step into the twilight.

Did You Know?• Le Royal Monceau Raffles Paris is a bastion of class in a city known for its elegance, and in June they up the ante for GCC guests with ‘VIP Treatment during Ramadan’. Each room will have all the prayer essentials, milk and dates will be served daily after sunset, an in-suite majlis is available, and a personal butler is on-hand to deliver that personal touch. When it comes to dining, the palace chefs have crafted a menu of Qatari-inspired halal dishes for the occasion, too.

Ask A Local“A day in Paris is best begun with a visit to Mouffetard market, where you find the freshest vegetables and fruits and an array of delicious cheeses. Then, head along Rue Mouffetard toward the Pantheon for a sweeter treat because, believe me, the most splendid crepes in town are served at Au P’tit Grec. To me there’s no more Parisian an experience than renting a bicycle and heading to Jardin des Tulleries, to read a book in this tranquil, lush garden.” Ines Rodrigues

Weekends48-Hour Foodie

48-Hour FoodieDubaiThe emirate is a hotbed of dining deliciousness and as the city retreats indoors, here’s where to feast on a sun-soaked June weekend

DAY TWOBreakfastThey can crack a pun at Eggspectation but yolking aside, their approach to the first meal of the day is seriously good. Begin the morning in JBR with fluffy french toast, hot crispy waffles, signature plates (a classic is Eggstravaganza; two any-style eggs, slices of brioche french toast with pure canadian maple syrup, plus beef bacon or sausage), and twists on the traditional (like a three-egg omelette with gently sautéed Nova Scotia lobster). Liquid gold is artisanal arabica delights from the espresso bar, or go caffeine-free with a healthy juice, freshly-squeezed. eggspectation.com

LunchBeside the stunning H Hotel atrium is the Delphine Restaurant and Bar, which enables guests to California dream in the UAE (a West Coast aura with a hint of Arabic design); velvet furnishings, art deco lighting and marble surfaces ensure a classy lunchtime setting. Grilled snapper, white bass, wild pacific prawns with lemon fettuccini, and a roasted lamb rack are some of the enticing entrées, while the likes of kebbe nayeeh and ahi tuna salad are on-hand for a lighter lunch option. h-hotel.com/dubai/en/dining.html

DinnerRound off the weekend with prized cuts of meat and enticing panoramic visuals of Dubai at Prime68. The restaurant – within the exceptional JW Marriott Marquis gastro-portfolio – is highly-commended for its elegant, 68th-floor environs. The flavour profiles of the prime black angus beef and award-winning full blood wagyu from the Butchers Block menu are divine, and within this white-chic interior resides a memorable, boutique interpretation of the steakhouse experience. jwmarriottmarquisdubailife.com

DAY ONEBreakfastHead to Al Quoz on an empty-stomach and leave Tom & Serg loaded up on gourmet cuisine and buzzing from speciality coffee. The Melbourne-chef and Madrid-businessman joined forces to transform a warehouse into a characterful setting, with its glass frontage and exposed brickwork. The menu looks good too: salted caramel french toast (with vanilla anglaise and poached plums), Breaky Bao (spicy buttermilk chicken and sriracha hollandaise), and warm zucchini, carrot and pecan nut bread... just some of the delights that awaken in the kitchen from 8am. tomandserg.com

LunchBold bamboo, Parisian flair and healthy eating: Comptoir 102 is the name, and it’s a restaurant that is more akin to a home, thanks to the kitchen, lounge, garden and terrace. The French owners (duo Emmanuelle Sawko and Alexandra de Montaudouin) consider it ‘a combination of fashion, homeware and an organic café.’ On the latter detail, (on the day of writing) they serve mains like quinoa chickpea galette, and tartare of tomato and guacamole with bulgur and olives. Visit their website for ‘Today’s Menu’. comptoir102.com

DinnerShiba is the themed setting for a culinary journey that explores the best cuisine from China and Japan... overlooking the Meydan racetrack. Among the delightful appetisers are dim sum (try the steamed chicken and prawn siewmai), before encountering dishes like Gindara (black cod and saikyo miso marinate), and Chengdu-style sliced lamb in hot chilli oil. Sushi, sashimi, and makimono enthusiasts will have tastebuds tantalised with an array of hand-shaped, well-rolled morsels. A true orientation. meydanhotels.com

at the bustling Epcot Theme Park, but this upper-class

abode is 2,750sq.ft. of pure tranquillity. A terracotta and

limestone-hued entryway leads to a living area with plush

furniture, marble fireplaces and cream-coloured Venetian plastered walls that contrast

with walnut-wood accents, while hand-planed American walnut flooring gives a solid
