THE NEXT STAGE CAMPAIGN SUSTAINING THE DECADE AHEAD
MUSIC AND DANCE FROM THE FAR AND NEAR CORNERS OF THE GLOBE

A QUARTER CENTURY OF OUTSTANDINGSUCCESSWorld Music/CRASHarts presents an unparalleled array of
established artists and promising, emerging talent from all
parts of the world. For the thrilling international stars with
whom we have long-standing presenting relationships,
greater Boston has become a second home. For lesser-known
artists, World Music/CRASHarts provides the opportunity to
perform before an enthusiastic and open-minded audience in
engagements that boost their international visibility.
For the diverse communities that make up our audiences, we
provide a common meeting ground through music and dance
as we share in the excitement of cultural discovery. Without
World Music/CRASHarts, this cultural exchange simply would
not happen.
Since 1991 World Music/CRASHarts has
• Presented over 800 artists, 1500 events, and 70
nationalities to 1 million audience members
• Showcased exceptional international artists, including
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Throat Singers of Tuva, Buena Vista
Social Club, Buika, Habib Koité, The Whirling Dervishes,
Salif Keita, Ballet Flamenco Sara Baras, Pink Martini,

Chocolate Drops
• Premiered more than 100 dance works by local, national,
and international companies including Stephen Petronio

excellence and inclusivity as we journey into the next decade.”

THE NEXT STAGECAMPAIGN SUSTAININGTHE DECADE AHEADFrom the far and near corners of the globe, there will always be
undiscovered musicians and dancers creating something new and
dreaming of finding their place on the world stage. Working through
global networks built over the past 25 years, World Music/CRASHarts
seeks out emerging artists and engages them to perform in the greater
Boston community. Artists appear in the venue for which they are
best suited, whether that is an intimate nightclub or the prestigious
setting of Symphony Hall. They join us in meaningful residencies,
workshops, and talks that reach children and adults from all walks
of life, and artists are able to share their creative work in front of
discerning and appreciative audiences.
We are proud to say that World
Music/CRASHarts is widely
recognized as greater Boston’s
leading presenter of global
music and contemporary dance.
We’ve accomplished this with
a small, devoted staff. We’ve
done it in the face of risks and
uncertainties, including visa
problems, abrupt cancellations,
economic downturns, and New
England snow days, all of which
can jeopardize income from
ticket sales.
World Music/CRASHarts
has been unique among local
nonprofit arts organizations
in that our income has come
primarily from ticket revenue,
with only a small percentage
derived from individual and
foundation contributions. While
World Music/CRASHarts is well
ahead of the industry standard
in our ability to cover expenses
with ticket revenue, we know we
must bolster our efforts to raise
contributed income to remain
vital in the decade ahead.
“WM/CA’s continued dedication to artistic excellence, exploration,
collaboration, and artistic innovation builds on the foundation
WM/CA has established for world music, jazz, and dance artists,
and audiences members, to develop creatively and take risks. It is
a rare presenter that does both as well as WM/CA.”
Pamela M. GreenPresident and Founder, PMG Arts Management
Please make an investment in the future of World Music/CRASHarts
and the artists we are privileged to present by supporting the
Next Stage Campaign.

performers and encourage artistic exploration.

Music/CRASHarts as we move into our next decade. Your gift supports our ability to
bring a unique mix of traditional and contemporary performing arts from around the
world to the Boston area, and enables us to go forward into the future with confidence.
Your gift will support our vision of discovery, sustainability, and transformation.
DISCOVERYour gift ensures that World
Music/CRASHarts continues
to present bold and innovative
programming, including
international artist debuts
and premieres by leading
choreographers, in both
large and intimate venues.
“BodyTraffic was truly a highlight! We
appreciated the talk-back at the end with the
dancers, and to hear the performers give
voice to their work and explain their process.“

SUSTAINYour gift provides World
Music/CRASHarts with the
resources it needs to broaden
its audience base and bridge
the shortfall between paid
admissions and the true
cost of concert production.
TRANSFORMYour gift brings together
people of diverse backgrounds
for enriching, one-of-a-kind
concert experiences and
inspires the next generation
of cultural explorers.
“WM/CA is much more than the music and dance; it
is a full cultural experience that builds bridges and
makes connections across cultures. WM/CA events
make us better citizens of the world.”
Audience Member
“In the global village, hearing
an utterly unexpected style
of music has become an
increasingly endangered
experience. But it’s still
possible to find surprising and
strangely beautiful sounds if
one knows where to look. In
Boston, the search often leads
to World Music/CRASHarts.”
The Boston Globe
“It’s the rare American dance-presenting organization that behaves like a curator of artists. WM/CA has taken on the role of curator of my work, and shares in the forward evolution of our dance form.“

“If it wasn’t for WM/CA presenting
Ladysmith Black Mambazo concerts
every year since 1991, we would never
have had the continued relationship with
the people of Boston that we have today.
Twenty-three years of sold-out concerts!
Thank you World Music.”
Joseph Shabalala Founder and Leader of
Ladysmith Black Mambazo

the Next Stage Campaign provides working capital to
implement four key initiatives:
Emerging Artists and Artistic Risk Initiative supports our
commitment to introducing emerging artists and presenting
large-scale productions and festivals.
Contemporary and World Dance Initiative underwrites
innovative dance and multidisciplinary performances that
inspire and engage audiences.
Concert Jazz Initiative presents jazz artists in concert settings
that generate the excitement and recognition these great
musicians deserve.
Building Community Engagement Initiative strengthens
our ability to broaden our audience through partnerships,
technology, and marketing.
THE NEXT STAGECAMPAIGN
“At WM/CA concerts, I feel a small
connection to the subcommunities
of Boston when I realize that I am
surrounded by Asians, Africans,
Brazilians, or whatever the nationality
is of the people gathered to hear one
of their own.”
