The advantages of Geko- asynchronous generators

Safety class IP 54 The generators meet safety class IP 54 and have an extendedlifetime due to their durable windings and bearings. Their rangeof application is considerably increased by the fact that they mayeven be used in conditions where they are exposed to humidityand dirt. Continual operation outdoors presents no problem atall.

Genset synchronisation (parallel operation)Due to its asynchronous design, it is possible to double the gensetperformance via a cable reel (SCS 400, see accessories). Thus,no complex synchronisation is needed. Even gensets of differentperformances may be used in parallel operation.

Low distortion factor (overtone spectrum)The given analysis of the harmonic overtones illustrates clearlythat the proportion of “parasitic freqencies” is extremely low.There are hardly any overtones in the higher frequency range.Thus, electronic devices cannot be influenced by any “unclean”supply voltage.The distortion factor of the average Geko-asynchronous gene-rator is approximately 2%. By comparison, customary synchronous generators often have adistortion factor of up to 15%.A low overtone proportion decreases the interference liability ofpractically all electronic consumers.

Electronic devices and phase-controlled modulators can be operated without any interferences. Electric motors run moresilent and heat up less with low distortion factors. The correlationbetween the average value, the peak value and the effectivevalue of the generator voltage is more clearly defined. This hasa particularly positive effect on the functioning of battery char-gers.

Practical application examples:The following appliances are susceptible to the distortion factor:- plastics welding machines- uninterruptible power supply- channel TV- battery charger

Excellent starting of inductive appliancesGeko-asynchronous generators cope perfectly well with appli-ances that demand a high startin current (e.g. circlar saws, fans,compressors) if the right device is chosen.

Geko has developed a special starting amplifier and is thussuperior to generators that use inverter technology or cyclo-con-verter-regulation. Even when compared to synchronous genera-tors, Geko-asynchronous technology with starting amplifier ismore than competitive.

Geko is the only manufacturer listing full details concerning thestarting current of its generators. No voltage super elevation

The dangerous voltage superelevation of slightly loaded phasesthat predominantly occur with compounded synchronous gene-rators (safety class IP 23) are completely avoided with Geko-asynchronous technology. Example: If an electronic analyzer, a computer or a simple lightbulb is connected to one phase and an appliance that demandsa high starting current (such as a circular saw, a fan or a com-pressor) is connected to the other phase, the voltage of thephase under low load increases to more than 300V. Smallappliances cannot cope with such a load.

A voltage increase is excluded if the Geko-asynchronous gene-rator principle is employed. It is thus possible to use achieve aconsiderably higher single-phase perfomance thatn with regulargenerators.

The two charts show the operation of a single-phase applianceunder a load of 28 A.

Safety class

The safety class of electric machines is specified in DIN 40050.This standard underlines that electric machines are to be construc-ted in such a way as to be protected against humidity and for-eign bodies. The safety class is specified by the letters IP followedby two figures.

1mm.5 Protection against harmful dust deposits. Intrusion of dust can-

not be avoided completely But dust should be prevented fromprotruding in such quantities as to impair the funcionality ofthe unit.

Geko safety class IP 54 represents an extremely high safetystandard. Devices designed according to saftey class IP 54 may be expo-sed to splash water without running any danger. The durability ofthe generator is further improved by its dust protection.

Devices designed according to safety class IP 23 should not beexposed to rain and splash water.

Starting amplification

- Voltage drop under extreme loads

Due to the fact that asynchronous generators have constant exci-tation capacitors, the given up voltage decreases when the loadis increased. In case of loading with ohmic load (cos ϕ = 1), thevoltage moves to the rated load within the tolerance of ±10%designated by DIN 6280. When an electric motor is connected,fluctuation occurs for a short period of time. This can causesevere phase fluctuations (up to cos ϕ = 0,6) until the voltage sta-bilizes.

- Adding additional excitation (starting amplifier)

Geko asynchronous gensets are available with a starting ampli-fier. As soon as the electrical consumption increases over therated current, an additional excitation is added to the standardexcitation. The voltage drop can thus becompensated.

To avoid all causes of possible thermal damage to the generator,the additional excitation is disabled 12 seconds later. This time issufficient for the starting of inductive appliances.

- Disconnectable starting amplification

For the operation with welding machines aconsiderable improvement may be achie-ved by disconnecting of the starting amplifi-cation. In order to suppress additional exci-tation, it is possible to swith manually to“welding operation”.

Synchronous generators are suitable for the operation of weldingmachines to a very limited extent only.

Functionality:Power generating systems generally are not operated under per-manent load. Rather shall energy immediately be made availa-ble on demand in like manner as the EVU. A good example forthis is the working with electric tools on building sites or in repairand emergency use.A power generating system without Geko Silent Economictechnology runs permanently at high speed with accordinglyhigh consumption, exhaust emission, loudness and wear. Bymeans of the Geko Silent Economic technology, the speed ofthe engine decreases and will be increased immediately ondemand of electric energy. Thus, consumption, exhaust emission,loudness and wear are drastically reduced. A special electronicprocessor recognizes the operating state of the entire gensetand controls the driving engine by means of measuring unitsand sensors. Thus, the control can immediately be active evenupon cold start and does not require additional operatingexpenditure.The speed of the driving engine will be reduced for approx.20% to 40% shortly after the last power output and thus, thegenset remains in readiness. Only upon necessary power out-put, the engine is raised with lighning speed to nominal speed,so that even appliances that demand a high starting current maybe operated.

Operation of electric toolsThe genset runs on silently andwithous using much fuel. Whenelectric tools are used full powerwill be available at once.

Practical application examples:

Advantages:• Geko offers this patented technology for its complete per-

formance rate from 3 kVA to 13 kVA.• Reduced noise level through reduced engine speed.• When a Geko Silent Economic power generating system

is used, appliances that demand a high starting current start3 times as fast as when a regular generator is used. Onlyafter that can you be sure what kind of Geko power generatingsystem meets your requirements. Therefore we now give you someimportant hints…

Please notice that the power of your most powerful appliance is notidentical with the power supply in VA (Voltampere) of a genset.That depends on variours technical factors which are similar withall generators. To give a detailed survey here would be too long.Therefore we recommend that you apply the following rule ofthumb for the calculation of the right power supply for continuousoperation:

Ohmic appliances (work-load appliances like hobs,heating devices, electric lamps etc.) Find out the power value of your most powerful appliance or thesum of power values of all appliances which are to be suppliedwith current simultaneously. For ohmic appliances Voltampere (VA)means at the same time Wattt (W) . Now, if you add 10% the requi-red power will be supplied by the power generator. Example: The sum of power to be consumed is 3500 VA = 3500Watt. You need a power generator with a minimum of (3500 +10%) = 3850 VA.

Inductive appliances with a high starting current (e.g.garden shredders, circular saws, pumps, compres-sors) Such devices require high starting power until they reach their nor-mal power consumption. Here you must also find out the powervalue of all appliances connected simultaneously. Now you havea choice between two generator types:

1. Standard devices, without starting amplifier These are gensets that have just one “A” prior to the dash in theirdesignation (example: 3002 E -A / HHBA).

The current delivered by the power generator should comprise, without starting amplification the 3fold to 3.5fold of the power consumption (in some exceptional cases up to the 4.5fold of the power consumption). Example: The sum of power to be consumed is 1500 VA. You

need a power generator with a minimum of (1500x3,0 or better 1500 x 3,5) = 5250 VA.

2. Devices with starting amplifier or synchronousgenerator

These are power generators that have in the designation twice thelater “A” or the letter “S” prior to the dash (example: 3002 E -AA/HHBA; 13002 ED-S/SEBA). Geko provides the maximumgenerator starting current as cos. ϕ 0,6 (voltage drop of 20%) withthe technical specifications.

The examples clearly show that with a similar power consumptiona considerably smaller, lighter and thus less expensive but star-ting amplified device may be used. Thus, the standard versionshould be recommended only if exclusively ohmic appliances orsmall inductive appliances are to be supplied with power. For theoperation of inductive appliances current generators with startingamplifier are ideal and offer great advantages compared to syn-chronous technology or inverter technology.

In case of doubt, you should principally choose the genset with thenext higher power supply. You will then be on the safe side, risk nobreakdowns, and be more flexible if a new appliance of higherpower consumption should later be added. the vast range ofGeko products offers you an optimum system. Blackout-Control BLCIn the case of power supply failure or intense power line fluctua-tions the Power automatic supply BLC manages the automaticaltaking over of power supply by the Geko genset. When linevoltage is back to normal, the power line is also set back auto-matcially and the genset is adjusted.

The newly developed Power automatic supply BLC offers unpar-alleled advantages and its usability has no equals:

- Complete assembly including contactor already integrated inthe generator

- Mono- and triphase type available- Switching on of the genset at a line voltage of <175 V and

>260 V- Switching off of the genset at a line voltage of >190 V and

<250 V- The switching on of the genset is managed by a temperature

sensor in the cylinder head, or starts after a warm-up time con-stant of 30 seconds. In this way, power supply with stable frequency is alreadysecured at the taking over.

- Three seconds after return of line voltage (>190 V and <250V), there is a switch back to the EVU power line.

- Up to three starting attempts are carried out automatically.

Blackout-Control BLC DieselIn the case of power supply failure or intense power line fluctua-tions the Power automatic supply BLC manages the automaticaltaking over of power supply by the Geko genset. When linevoltage is back to normal, the power line is also set back auto-matcially and the genset is adjusted.

The newly developed Power automatic supply BLC offers unpar-alleled advantages and its usability has no equals:

- Complete assembly including contactor already integrated inexternal Control box

- Mono- and triphase type available- Switching on of the genset at a line voltage of <175 V and

>260 V- Switching off of the genset at a line voltage of >190 V and

<250 V- The switching on of the genset is managed by a temperature

sensor in the cylinder head, or starts after a warm-up time. In this way, power supply with stable frequency is alreadysecured at the taking over.

- Three seconds after returnof line voltage (>190 Vand <250 V), there isa switch back to themains.

- Up to threestartingattempts arecarried outautomatical-ly.
