Recap Look at the following list of hazardous
events and decide if it is a natural eventornatural hazard 1- A cyclone affecting Hong Kong 2- A hurricane passing over a remote
unpopulated island 3- A flood in a rural area which floods the
roads, but does not affect any houses
4- A volcano erupting on a remote unpopulatedisland 5- An avalanche in a ski resort 6- An avalanche high on mountainous slopes
remote from any settlement

The Disaster Risk Equation
Hazards x Vulnerability Risk = Capacity
The risk of disaster grows as globalhazards and peoples vulnerabilityincreases, while their capacity to copedecreases
MEDCs LEDCs

The Disaster Risk Equation
Important to know that vulnerability is notthe same as poverty!
E.g Earthquake It is possible for middle class to be more
affected by the collapse of their unsafehomes than the poor in a shanty townwhose flimsy homes collapse and cause
little damage

Vulnerability Factors
Either bullet point or produce spider diagramsto explain how the following factors can effectvulnerability
Wealth of people Technical ability of a country Education Age Rural Urban

Importance of Vulnerability
The impact of any hazard are a resultof peoples vulnerability not necessarilythe hazards strength. People remain
exposed to risk (ie vulnerability) for avariety of reasons
1. Vulnerable people do not live indangerous places because they want to;they do it because they have to. Landmay be cheaper, or unwanted by others

2. Vulnerable people cannot afford tobuild well, even if building regulations
are enforced.

3. Rapid urbanisation has forced thepoor into high risk areas of cities

4. Changing risk Rising sea levels meanthat safe areas are now prone to
flooding & storm surges. Deforestationof watersheds reduces interception &increases the risk of flooding.
5. Cost v Benefits eg benefits of fertilesoils on volcanoes v risk of eruption
