The exhibition ON AIR is an ecosystem in becoming, hosting emergent choreographies and polyphonies across human and non-human universes, where artworks reveal the common, fragile and ephemeral rhythms and trajectories between these worlds. As a hybrid ecosystem, ON AIR is made of a myriad presences, both animate and inanimate, that meet and cohabit within it. Some voices become quiet, whilst others, perhaps those less often heard by human ears, are magnified. The exhibition functions as an ensemble for silent voices, performing the hidden scores that link events and sensibilities, earthly and cosmic phenomena – weaving a web of relations that cannot be described but maybe can be felt. ON AIR proposes a space and time that makes manifest the forces and entities that float in the air, and their interactions with us: from CO2 to cosmic dust, from radio infrastructures to reimagined corridors of mobility. Thus, the invisible histories that compose the ecologies we are part of invite us to poetically rethink different ways of inhabiting the world – and of being human. While extractivist activities that mine the Earth for resources continue to threaten entire ecologies, ON AIR celebrates new ways of thinking about our relation with the planet, through new modes of knowledge production. This is to open itself up to the debate and global challenges posed by the Anthropocene, a word proposed to define the current epoch we live in on Planet Earth, in which some human activities leave an impact so important that they profoundly modify terrestrial ecologies. It is especially through the activities of Aerocene, an interdisciplinary artistic project initiated by Tomás Saraceno that seeks to reactivate a common imaginary to collaborate ethically with the atmosphere and the environment, that visitors are invited to collectively engage in an exercise of urgent planetary attunement. ON AIR echoes the artist’s practice as it gathers numerous collaborators and collaborations, bringing together scientific institutions, research groups, activists, local communities, visitors, musicians, philosophers, non-human, and celestial phenomena, all of whom equally take part in the evolution of the exhibition. A series of workshops, concerts, public symposiums become part of a continuous process of transformation of the Palais de Tokyo into an evolving “cosmic jam session”.

Event Horizon offers an opportunity to listen to the vibrations produced by a Holocnemus pluchei, a species of spider that has been living at the Palais de Tokyo since long before the exhibition began. Could this highly sensitive animal, though blind and deaf in comparison to humans, be able to detect the vibrations of colliding black holes that occurred more than a billion years ago?The vibrations of these cosmic events are transmitted live to the web of the spider, which eventually senses them and responds in turn with its own vibrations. These potential jam sessions are then translated into frequencies audible to humans via a speaker. Just like spiders, we too become able to pick up the vibrations of cosmic events. This work unravels new scales of perception, those of other species that might sense and feel differently in the cosmic web in which we are all enmeshed. * The cosmic events in Event Horizon are live streamed from the VIRGO antenna at the European Gravitational Observatory (CNRS/INFN).

Webs of At-tent(s)ion is made up of 76 hybrid spider/webs* – sculptures interwoven by different spider species where individual threads and sensory worlds combine to form a floating landscape. These spider/webs are an extension of the spider’s senses – they become its ears, eyes and mouth – while at the same time providing a home for its body. Through the filaments of the spider/webs, spiders send and receive vibrations, and perhaps even thoughts: they offer a way for these creatures to connect to the world. Some of these spider/webs have been amplified with special microphones that allow us to listen to the rhythm of their vibrations. A population of over 500 spiders lives at Palais de Tokyo, and this constellation of spider/webs invites us to reflect on our coexistence with this ever-present species. *We do not isolate the spider from the web as the latter can be considered an extension of the spider’s senses and even of its cognitive apparatus: the external world is perceived by the spider through the tensions and vibrations of its web.

Sounding the Air is a musical instrument composed of five strings of spider silk that float and resonate in the air. It is not played by an individual human but rather by an ensemble of forces and presences that transform the surrounding space and its dynamics: invisible movements created by differences in temperature or by the flux and the breathing of visitors. Translating vibrations into sound frequencies, this installation lets us hear the sound of the air itself. Sound system realized with the support of FOCAL.

This room puts into perspective the different ways in which the movements of people, heat, animals, and spider silk affect and are affected by the air. Pens suspended to balloons draw with black carbon ink PM2.5 pollution from the air of Mumbai. Spider’s webs laid out on paper produce strange new Spider maps, while the trajectories of balloons that float freely in the air without the help of fossil fuels trace out Aeroglyphs. Together these ‘Aerographies’ are letters, characters and signatures of a new language for the Aerocene era.

If a colony of spiders living on an acre of land were to collectively and continuously weave a thread of silk, over the course of just 10 days they would produce a fibre long enough to reach the moon. This imaginary thread provides a possible link between the Earth and the Cosmos, and acts as a symbol of possible cosmic futures. In this installation, spiders are invited to spin their webs between different balloons to form new airborne habitats and architectures that could inspire mankind.

Web SDR projection displays the radio frequencies generated by meteoroids impacting the last layer of the atmosphere while Turning Horizon is a clockwise turning image of the Milky Way shot in the salt lake of Uyuni, Bolovia. Meanwhile in the first projection, borders between Earth and outer space collide, in the second one the same borders are upturned, decentering the viewer’s cosmic orientation.

In this black-and-white environment, objects and humans cast their shadows across an ever-changing lightscape, where everything floats, grows, reveals and fades away. Encountering a succession of solar eclipses amongst planet-like shadows, the visitor is reminded of their place on a cosmic scale, and of the elemental forces of thermodynamics, the branch of physics that studies the forces of heat

and temperature. This connection between the Earth and the Sun further reminds participants that humanity relies on a reciprocal alliance between the elements and their effects, and encourages them to evolve into homo flotantis, the human of the new Aerocene epoch. Museo Aero Solar is a community that, since its founding in 2007, creates a collective flying museum by pasting together used plastic bags in which the visitor can enter. A trace of our current era, this at once fascinating and monstrous museum introduces the final part of the exhibition: a collaborative space dedicated to Aerocene.

The Multi-messenger room is a space in which the many different forms of knowledge present in the exhibition come together, whether in the form of books and essays or live-streams of data from the deep cosmos. As in a traffic jam at a crossroads, these signals collide with the local ones generated within the exhibition space. These intersecting codes and languages are conveyed through the installation Algo-R(h)i(y)thms, with the room imagined as a site of encounters, a roundtable or a meeting room.

Aerocene is an international and multi-disciplinary community aimed at inventing new ways of being in the air, free from borders, free from fossil fuels. This space will be activated by workshops and interventions throughout the exhibition’s duration. Promoting do-it-yourself and do-it-together practices, these sessions will ask a profound question: what would it feel like to breathe in a post fossil fuel era? The Argyroneta aquatica is a unique spider species that lives mostly underwater. Tomás Saraceno explores the capacity of certain species to transform their way of life to adapt to new environments. Will humans someday be able to live in the air?

The Aerocene Explorer is a sculpture that rises into the air without the use of fossil fuels, helium or hydrogen. It is sent aloft as a signal that calls for the deconstruction of aerial borders and the preservation of our air. It contains several sensors that capture atmospheric data such as temperature, humidity, pressure and air quality. Its users are invited to appropriate it and to improve its functionalities. It is a sculpture that is always evolving through an ongoing, collective and open process of construction, a poetic tool for imagining a new era without fossil fuels and new ways of decarbonizing the atmosphere through the removal of particulate matter.

Radio Galena is a real stone. It is not connected to any electrical grid, batteries, solar panels or electronic devices. And yet, it is a radio receiving electric radio waves. It functions like a traditional crystal receiver, an early radio device. Here it picks up a Mapuche radio station, broadcast from southern Argentina, which focuses on this indigenous people’s legal claims to territorial autonomy. This stone tunes us in to ecological frequencies and proves that even inanimate objects can enable us to go “on air”.

Air is a restless substance, forever in motion. How might we listen to the particles floating within it? In the installation Particular Matter(s) Jam Session (2018), a beam of light illuminates dust particles of domestic, terrestrial and cosmic origin. Cameras record the position and velocity of the particles in real time, transforming them into musical tones that are amplified through speakers spread out across the exhibition space. This unique composition combines the vibrations of spider/webs, the sounds of dolphins and of potentially hydrofracking live-streamed from the depths of the Mediterranean Sea* and the cosmic and terrestrial dust stirred by the breath and movements of visitors. It reveals the complex assemblage of vibrant matter in which humans are inextricably entangled.

The question of what inhabits the air emerges as a crucial one: particulate matter is the very material that we breathe. *Livestream provided by KM3NeT in Capo Passero, Sicily, Italy. The artwork Particular Matter(s) is supported by the Rolls-Royce Art Programme. The practice of Tomás Saraceno and his studio is animated by the assemblage of different knowledges. Starting from their artistic research, they carry out interdisciplinary projects with different scientists, researchers and prominent institutions and universities. These collaborations have led to a series of technical inventions that open up new perspectives. Some of these are on display here, such as the Interspecies translator or the Aerocene Float Predictor, a tool that allows individuals to plan a journey around the world in a post-fossil fuel era, following the rivers of the wind and crossing geopolitical borders without the use of helium, hydrogen, solar panels or batteries.

flight (which thus set two new world records), and the flight of eight Aerocene Tata Inti sculptures.True technical feats in their own right, these artistic experiments are also political and poetic gestures: the former took place at the site of the first detonation of a nuclear weapon, while the latter was conducted over the Salinas Grandes Salt Lake, a site which in recent years has become home to an intensive lithium extraction industry.

White Sands and Aerocene Tata Inti are videos that present two actions conducted by the Aerocene community: the first and longest entirely solar-powered manned

The projection Cosmic Levitation shows specks of cosmic dust coalescing around the vibrational rhythms of different sound frequencies. Individual particles here are transformed into new assemblages as part of an experiment conducted with the Jaeger Lab at the University of Chicago.

Algo-r(h)i(y)thms is an invitation to join an ongoing jam session that will continue for the duration of the exhibition. Participants are invited to play by gently plucking or sliding their fingers up and down the strings. In doing so, they become part of a network of unexpected encounters, jamming and tuning in to the reverberating rhythms that surround them. Each of the strings in the work resonates at different frequencies. Some of these are audible while others are beyond the range of human hearing and can only be felt as vibrations. Infrasound amplifiers transform the floor into a speaker, and lying in the floor, the visitor’s body becomes an extension of their ears, a vibrating membrane that shifts attention towards other modes of perception.
