Workshop
Titre / Titel: Teaching a short story by Hemingway using
video and drama techniques
Groupe-cible/
Zielgruppe:
Teachers and lovers of literature
Objectifs / Lernziele: Language instructors who introduce works of
literature to non-native speakers of English
often struggle to find material of literary merit
that is manageable in terms of linguistic and
cultural factors. Thus, when an experienced
teacher finds a particular piece which proves
to be successful in the classroom, it is
important to show others how to go about
teaching it, why it works, and what kind of
student response to anticipate.
Contenu / Inhalt: In this workshop I shall demonstrate how to teach a very short Hemingway story, which is valuable from a literary standpoint, as well as for its vocabulary, simplicity of language and cultural insights. In addition to doing an analysis of point of view, character, social attitudes, metaphor and irony, participants will use drama techniques to deepen their appreciation of the story and will subsequently view two cinematic adaptations of it, which they will compare to the story. Participants will also look at excerpts from a strikingly similar story by David Foster Wallace, a 21st century writer, to enhance their understanding of the original Hemingway version.
