01. BackgroundDuring the night of the 6th of April 2009, an earthquake rated 6.3 on the Richter scale, struck middle Italy territories. Castelvecchio, close to L’Aquila, is located in a remote and diffi cult area due to geographical morphology. This village became not accessible right after the earthquake struck. Few residents (around 200 persons) were forced to leave the village for safety reasons. The village has suffered several damages to buildings, about 42-43% of the buildings have been not accessible. Nevertheless, most of Castelvecchio’s inhabitants have never returned to their original houses. More than ten years after the seism the whole village is still not accessible. Why residents have not came back in ten years? How to approach this topic? Do Architects today have ideas for reconstruction?
02. Reconstruction This Workshop 5x5 is focusing on giving to participants a methodological framework reconstruction approach after an earthquake emergency.Damage assessment, rehabilitation, political analysis, decision-making, local development, social consequences, planning, repair, local governament, mapping are all key-words in all the Post Disaster Recovery Plan. Throughout the relief efforts and rapid reconstruction process, EAHR brings its knowledge in the case of Castelvecchio to increase the resilience of this affected community. In this workshop participants will approach almost all these delicate phases and will be trained on how to develop a reconstruction plan according to the on-site situation. As part of the experience of education in this topics, EAHR proposes a workshop focusing on learning of practices, methodologies, best practices related to reconstruction processes. This Workshop will discuss both technical aspects of reconstruction and the underlying principles of the post-earthquake analysis.
