WORK SHEET FOR BUILDING A
MERIT BADGECOUNSELOR LIST
P U R P O S EThis work sheet is designed for use by a district
or council committee responsible for adva n c e-m e n t . It provides a convenient method for bu i l d i n ga merit badge counselor list.
In all cases, merit badge counselors must bea p p roved by the district or council committeer e s p o n s i ble for advancement and must be regis-tered as an adult with the Boy Scouts of America.
H OW TO USE1 . Determine the area that the merit badge coun-
selor list must serv e.2 . Select head counselors for each merit badge
g roup listed inside this work sheet. Enter theirnames and addresses in the proper spaces.
The head counselor is responsible for all badges inthe gr o u p.The counselor is not expected to be an ex p e rtin each badge, but should be capable of recruiting thosewho are qualified.
The number of counselors required for each badgedepends upon the badge’s popularity with Scouts.
3 . C h e ck all existing lists of counselors to deter-mine who are active.
4 . Obtain a supply of “A Guide for RecommendingMerit Badge Counselors .” These leaflets willhelp you recruit new counselors .
Each leaflet tells the merit badge story and includes afo rm on which an individual may recommend prospectivem e rit badge counselors. D i s t ri bute the leaflets at meet-ings of organizations such as service clubs, profe s s i o n a lgr o u p s, parents’m e e t i n g s, and other such meetings. T h i swill produce the names of many prospective counselorsfor recru i t i n g .
5 . When this work sheet is complete, use it as aguide for reproducing additional lists for distri-bution to all units.
6 . Keep this work sheet updated by continu a l lyrecruiting new counselors to replace the inac-tive ones and to meet the increased needs ofthe Scouts it serv e s . R e p roduce revised listsand distribute them at least annu a l ly.
7 . So that all counselors may learn their jobs,send them a copy of “Merit Badge Counseling.”

To the left of each merit badge, enter the number earned during the past year.Keep this list up to date by adding new merit badge titles in blank spaces as they are announced by your council.This list should be revised annually to include new merit badges and changes of counselors.
