    Thank you for partnering with us in the development of this project. The design and development of an online course or module is a challenging and rewarding process. These guidelines have been developed to introduce you to DCDC’s process and to help you understand your integral role. We see this project as a partnership; your expertise and diligence will be crucial to the success of this project.

    These guidelines introduce:

  • SectIon 1: Basic kNowledge of iNstructioNal desigN

    Instructional design (ID) is a systematic process that includes:

    In developing a course or module, DCDC will talk with you about your content and decide how best to teach it.

    What is Instructional Design?

    Analyzing learners and their needs,

    Delineating general goals and specific learning objectives,

    Developing instructional strategies to meet learners’ needs and course goals,

    Evaluating learning outcomes.

    DCDC-developed courses have received lots of positive comments from students.

    Here are just a few to share.

    There are many things that I like best about this class. For one, it is very organized and a great online class, which makes me motivated to log in everytime.

    My favorite aspect of the course is that from the curriculum is set up so that we can succeed, not struggle.

    I really like the structure of the course. I know where to find all the information and what needs to be done. I’m not left in the dark about anything.

    Even though we aren’t in a classroom, we can still communicate and give each other feedback. This was the first semester that I’ve had online classes and I was really afraid and didn’t know what to expect. I am learning a lot from this class and my outlook on online classes has changed drastically. I’m really enjoying this class!

  • SectIon 2: dcdc’s course desigN & developmeNt process

    DCDC’s design and development process consists of eight steps and is divided into three stages. See Section 5 for details of the process and your integral role and particular tasks.

    What is DCDC’s design and development process?

    SME and DCDC expertise are each unique and integral to this process. It’s through collaboration and teamwork that the best from both are utilized to create an effective online module or course. We will meet on a regular basis to develop timeline, blueprint, module content, and course prototype. DCDC will provide guides/templates to help you move forward in the process.

    We’ve worked with many SMEs and here are some of their comments on the process and us.

  • SectIon 3: possiBle effects of missiNg deadliNes

    The development schedule moves quickly so meeting deadlines is critical.

    Missing deadlines may result in the following:

    Incomplete or subpar course: Less time is allotted for course development and less time for course revision. This may result in the delivery of an incomplete course or module to the client. If deadlines aren’t being met, we issue a memo to the client stating the possibility of the delivery of an incomplete course.

    Negative effect on your workload: Missing deadlines compresses work into a shorter time period, causing an increased workload toward the end of the development process. In the case of delivering an incomplete course, you or future instructors will be responsible for completing the incomplete parts of the course on your own. Although you will learn how to edit the site, inputting content and revising the course website is still time-consuming.

    Reflects poorly on both you and DCDC: Your name appears on the course website and Teacher’s Guide, along with ours. If the course or module is less than stellar, it reflects poorly on us both.

  • What are the technologies that DCDC uses when developing online courses?

    SectIon 4: desigN & developmeNt techNologies

    WordpreSS

    DCDC uses an online content management system called Wordpress to build its course sites. Wordpress allows you to easily edit the course website with minimal training and no previous technical experience.

    laulIma

    The University of Hawaii’s learning management system (LMS). DCDC’s online courses are usually delivered using Laulima, UH’s course management system. The course Wordpress website is displayed within Laulima so students can access all website content and instructors can use Laulima tools such as Assignments, Gradebook or Quizzes.

    BlackBoard collaBorate

    A web conferencing tool that allows users to come together and interact in online meetings

    BaSecamp

    A project management system that is used for communication between DCDC and SMEs. DCDC will help you learn how to use it.

  • From our experience working with SMEs, successful SMEs are:

    What are some tips for being a successful SME?

    Proactive in learning technology concepts or tools

    Open to using technology for student engagement and to facilitate learning

    Responsive and open in communication with DCDC

    Able to meet team deadlines. DCDC and SMEs bring a different set of expertise to planning an online course. Planning a course with DCDC is at least the time equivalent of a new course preparation.

    GENERal TIPS FoR SUCCESSSectIon 6: tips for BeiNg a successful sme

    Reduce your workload and outside obligations for the development period.

    Plan your schedule to accommodate and meet project deadlines.

    Let DCDC staff know how they can help you be successful or efficient.

    If you are unable to meet a deadline, let DCDC know immediately and expect impacts on timeline and/or product completion.

    Communication is key because this is a collaborative process.

    You are expected to spend at least 10 hours per week on this project.

  • Do I need to learn Wordpress or Blackboard Collaborate before working with DCDC?

    No, you will be trained after the design and development of your course is done. However, if you would like to get a head start, check out our support website for basic tutorials or the Wordpress or Blackboard Collaborate websites for additional tutorials.

    What if I get busy or need to travel during the development process?

    Please let DCDC team (via Basecamp – our collaboration tool) know in advance so we can adjust timelines accordingly.

    I have only taught face-to-face, what can I do to prepare to teach online?

    You are not required to do extra preparation. You will learn about it when working with us. However, if you would like to start learning strategies and considerations, we do have some helpful resources available at our support website.
