Writer John Cressy Winning Battle With Esophagus Cancer
John Cressy of Whisenhunt Communications has been writing Trash Flash articles, press releases and other copy for Harrison Industries for 14 years. But a six-month long battle with esophageal cancer has sidelined him. However, he is back at his computer on a part-time basis writing copy for his favorite client.
John became a true trash man and knows more about the business than most people in the business. We missed him terribly during the times we were in need of an educational press release or story. He fought a valiant battle and won and we are so happy that he is back with us -- but I tell him all the time: health fi rst. Stan Whisenhunt, owner of Whisenhunt Communications, has been fi lling in with writing assignments while John has been recovering. John fi rst experienced diffi culty swallowing food late last year but initially dismissed the problem, thinking he was just eating too fast. Even aft er chewing his food more thoroughly and taking more time between bites, the problem progressively got worse. Over the next weeks, swallowing became more and more diffi cult. He fi nally made an appointment with his doctor and an endoscopy revealed the cancer.
Aft er six weeks of radiation treatment and chemotherapy, John underwent a delicate eight-hour surgery at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center to remove the cancerous portion of his esophagus. Th e operation was a success and his doctors have determined John to be cancer-free.
John has been recovering at home the past two months and is slowly regaining his strength. He hopes to be back at full strength sometime this summer.
Members of the Harrison family came out in full force at the 39th annual Ventura County Council, Boy Scouts of America Denim & Diamonds Dinner and Auction held on Friday, June 5th at Camarillo’s historic Ranch House. Harrison Industries, a longtime sponsor of the event, is a frequent supporter of community organizations dedicated to fostering the growth and development of local young men and women.
Th e Ventura County Council, Boy Scouts of America supports over 5,300 registered youth and provides high-quality Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs to boys ages 6 to 18 and Venturing and Exploring units to young men and women from ages 14 to 20. Th e Council also provides a Scoutreach program to low-income, at-risk boys and girls in surrounding communities. Ralph Harrison, president of Harrison Industries, earned the rank of Eagle Scout during his youth which is the highest rank available in the Boy Scouts of America program. Ralph was proud to enjoy the festivities at this year’s Denim & Diamonds along with his wife Jenny.

For the sixth year running, a group of big-hearted walkers took to the track at Nordhoff High School in Ojai to participate in the American Cancer Society’s (www.cancer.org) annual Relay for Life. For 12 hours straight on Saturday, May 30, nearly 150 walkers circled the track, participated in games and helped raised more than $22,000 that will help fund cancer research, programs and patient support services. Harrison Industries was a proud sponsor of this year’s event.
Entitled “Give Cancer the Boot,” the 2015 Ojai Relay for Life had a decidedly western theme and included fi ve live bands, food trucks, a DJ, karaoke and free haircuts for those donating hair to Locks of Love. At Relay for Life events around the world, survivors are celebrated for overcoming cancer, those who have lost their lives to the disease are honored and remembered, and communities rally together to raise funds and support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving mission to create a world without cancer.
As a Merlot sponsor of the 22nd Annual Casa Pacifi ca Angels Wine, Food & Brew Festival held on Sunday, June 7, Harrison Industries was proud to toast the compassionate care, counseling and educational services Casa Pacifi ca provides to Ventura County’s abused and neglected children and their families.

Art Lovers Flock to Camarillo’s Second Annual Arts Alive Festival
Harrison Hits a High Note with Ojai Music Festival Sponsorship
A long-time supporter of the arts, Harrison Industries was proud to sponsor the second annual Arts Alive-West Coast Interactive Art Experience that took place on Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31 at Camarillo’s Studio Channel Islands Art Center.
Th e free, family-friendly event covered eight acres and drew 2,500 art lovers who enjoyed the creations of more than 100 talented artists, entertainers and arts organizations. In addition, attendees were treated to live music, performing artists, a chalk art competition for the kids, plus an array of food trucks and a beer garden.
Th e hills of Ojai were alive with the sound of music from June 10–14 during the 69th annual Ojai Music Festival. Held under the stars in downtown Ojai’s beautiful Libbey Bowl, the ever popular festival is well-known for combining classical and experimental music, introducing audiences to new composers, and featuring world-class musicians from around the globe.
Harrison Industries, an enthusiastic corporate sponsor, looks forward to the popular festival each June knowing that hundreds of top-notch musicians and thousands of music lovers will come together for four jam-packed days of music and celebration. Th is year’s festival spotlighted the works of 49 composers, 34 of whom live in the Ojai Valley. And to add to the excitement, more than half of the local composers were newcomers to the festival.
Th e 2015 festival director, Steven Schick, is a percussionist, conductor, author and champion of contemporary music who has previously performed at the festival numerous times. Schick’s impressive resume includes premiering or commissioning more than 150 new works for percussion; teaching music as a professor at UC San Diego; serving as the music director of the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus and artistic director of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players; and founding and directing the percussion group, red fi sh blue fi sh. Schick’s talents were showcased in a solo concert on June 12 and as part of a trio that performed for a marathon four-and-a-half hours at sunrise on Sunday, June 14.
Th e festival opened on Wednesday, June 10 with a multimedia tribute to the French composer, conductor and pianist Pierre Boulez. Boulez, who has previously served as the Ojai festival’s music director a record-breaking seven times, was honored for his music as well as for the fact that he celebrated his 90th birthday last March. His music was also prominently featured in a series of three additional programs. Th e following aft ernoon, 80 musicians were stationed around the park as the audience members roamed the grounds listening to them play.

Harrison Shows Patriotic Spirit in the Ventura Chamber’s Spring Business Expo
Harrison Industries was proud to show off their American spirit by sponsoring the Ventura Chamber of Commerce’s Spring Business Expo entitled “Th e Patriot in Us All!”
On Th ursday, May 28, Nan Drake and Peter Gutierrez joined the more than 60 booth exhibitors that participated in this ever-popular event.
Health and Fitness Take Center Stage at 10th Annual Summerfest Celebration
Summer came early to the 8,000 Ventura County children and their families who attended the 10th annual Summerfest celebration in Ventura on Saturday, May 30. Hosted by the Ventura Education Partnership and the Ventura Unifi ed School District (VUSD) in alliance with the City of Ventura, this popular end-of-the school-year wellness celebration teaches kids and their parents about the importance of eating better, exercising more and living healthier, happier lives.
Held at the VUSD’s Education Service Center in Ventura, more than 90 community, sports and health organizations participated by hosting booths, off ering hands-on activities, performing health screenings, and sharing information and education about health and wellness. Harrison Industries was one of fi ve Gold-level Summerfest sponsors, and the others included Aera Energy, First 5 Ventura County, Dr. Bryant and Linda Lum, and Ed and Susan Lacey.
Th e free event kicked off with a 3K fun-run/walk and continued with a full day of activities, games, sports competitions and live music. All festivities focused on engaging children and their families to become and stay fi t, active and healthy. Th e funding raised by Summerfest 2015 helps to support school nutrition and exercise programs as well as Ventura Education Partnership grants that benefi t VUSD students.

California Honey Harvest Festival Creates Quite a Buzz in Fillmore

Th e 4th annual California Honey Harvest Festival & BBQ Championship fl ew into Fillmore’s Downtown Central Park on Saturday, June 13. Festival attendees were treated to an array of sweet treats including a ride on the historic Fillmore & Western Railway, bee keepers providing educational demonstrations about the history of honey and how it’s made, tours of Bennett’s Honey Farm plus arts and craft s, live music and entertainment and a barbecue cook off contest.
Th e cook-off , which is a qualifi er for the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, attracted 26 teams of talented barbecue chefs who grilled up their best recipes for chicken, pork ribs, pork butt, pork roast or beef brisket. Th eir culinary creations were ranked by a panel of 40 volunteer judges and then served up as samplings to festival goers at City Hall which had been transformed into a barbecue tasting hall.
Harrison Industries was a proud sponsor of this year’s event which provided a great day of family fun and also supported Autism Speaks, a national non-profi t that works to increase research and awareness of autism spectrum disorders.
Harrison Industries was a lunch sponsor at the Boys & Girls Club of the Santa Clara Valley’s 12th Annual Golf Classic.

California Gov. Jerry Brown last September signed Assembly Bill 1826, designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions, reduce the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, and create a source of green energy.
AB 1826, which takes eff ect April 1, 2016, mandates that businesses generating more than eight cubic yards of organic waste per week will be required to arrange for organic waste recycling services. It helps implement AB 341, the 2011 landmark recycling law that established the goal of diverting at least 75 percent of California’s solid waste away from landfi lls by 2020.
AB 1826 accomplishes this by diverting methane-gas-producing organic food and yard waste away from landfi lls and into programs that recycle the waste. Organics are delivered to our strategic partner Agromin who turns the waste into nutrient-rich compost for commercial and residential landscapes and local farms to create healthy soils and conserve water. In the near future, Anaerobic Digestion technology will be used to turn organic waste into renewable biofuels.
Harrison Industries, Agromin and the City of Ventura are committed to helping Ventura businesses meet the mandates of the new legislation. In fact, we have anticipated these future regulations and have already taken steps to meet their requirements.
