Working on Country Photography Competition 2016

Conditions of Entry

WHO CAN ENTER THIS COMPETITION

• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people involved or associated with a Working on Country (WOC) project, an Indigenous Protected Area (IPA)* or an Indigenous ranger project funded under the Indigenous Advancement Strategy (IAS). *IPAs may be declared or in consultation/co-management phase.

• Ranger team coordinators and other staff working on a WOC project, an IPA or an Indigenous ranger project funded under the IAS.

• Staff from organisations providing support to a WOC project, an IPA or an Indigenous ranger project funded under the IAS. For example, natural resource management organisations, schools and universities.

• There is no age limit and no limit to the number of competition entries – photos may be entered into multiple award categories.

You can enter a digital photo or photo series of up to three photos, as well as a short story (optional - up to 150 words) about your photo or photo series.

The digital photo or photo series could:

• Convey the spirit or feel of your WOC project, IPA or Indigenous ranger project. For example, photos of country or places and/or of people associated with, or working on, your project;

• Be a depiction of people working together caring for country. For example, elders sharing knowledge with Indigenous youth, or Indigenous rangers and non-Indigenous people working together on country;

• Showcase a particular aspect of work you are undertaking as part of your project. For example, turtle rehabilitation or revegetation of a threatened species of Australian flora;

• Promote land or sea management work as a positive career choice and how it is benefitting the wider community;

• Provide inspiring images of role models for young people.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Photos may be colour or black and white. All photos will be printed at A4 size by the Department for the judging process.

• High resolution digital photos that are at least 2MB are preferred to ensure the quality of the photo is maintained. Each photo must not be over 8MB.

PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD CATEGORIES AND PRIZES

There are five award categories. The winning photo or photo series for each award, except the People’s Choice Award, will be announced at an award ceremony which will be held at the Australian National Botanical Gardens (ANBG) during the period 15 June 2016 to 10 July 2016. The winning photo or photo series for the People’s Choice Award will be announced on 11 July 2016.

AWARDS AND PRIZES

Working on Country Photography Award - 1st Place Prize

All photos can be entered into this category. The prize will be awarded to the nominated ranger group or IPA on whose behalf the winning photo was entered.

• Parrot Bebop camera drone with iPod controller.

• Return travel and accommodation for two representatives of the winning ranger group or IPA to attend the award ceremony at the ANBG in Canberra in June/July 2016.

Working on Country Photography Award - 2nd Place Prize

All photos can be entered into this category. The prize will be awarded to the nominated ranger group or IPA on whose behalf the winning photo was entered.

• GoPro Hero4 Session camera with headstrap and quickclip.

Youth Award

Only photos taken by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander photographers 18-24 years of age can be entered into this category. The prize will be awarded to the photographer.

• iPad mini4 Wi-Fi 16GB.

Women on Country Award

Only photos taken by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander women can be entered into this category. The prize will be awarded to the photographer. Photos should depict women caring for country.

• iPad mini4 Wi-Fi 16GB.

Students on Country Award

Only photos taken by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander primary or secondary school students can be entered into this category. The prize will be awarded to the photographer.

• iPod touch 64GB.

People’s Choice Award

All photos can be entered into this category. The prize will be awarded to the nominated ranger group or IPA on whose behalf the winning photo was entered.

SELECTING THE COMPETITION FINALISTS AND WINNERS

• There will be a panel of at least three judges. A majority of the judges will be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. All judges will have experience in natural and cultural resource management, photography, communications and/or curation.

• The judging panel will select 40 finalist photos from all competition entries. The finalist photos will be uploaded for public viewing on the competition website.

• From the 40 finalist photos, the judging panel will select the winners for the Working on Country Photography Award (1st and 2nd place), the Youth Award, the Women on Country Award and the Students on Country Award.

• The finalist photo images will be framed and included in an exhibition at the ANBG in Canberra from 15 June to 10 July 2016.

• The People’s Choice Award winner will be selected by people viewing finalist photo images on the Working on Country photography competition website and voting online by 10 July 2016, and by people visiting the exhibition of finalist photo images at the ANBG in Canberra and voting on a card.

SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRIES

• Photos can be entered online at the competition website at www.dpmc.gov.au/woc-photocomp. Online consent must be given for each photo or photo series that is entered.

• Photos can be entered by emailing [email protected]. A consent form must be completed and emailed for each photo or photo series that is entered. The maximum size limit for emails sent to [email protected] is 10MB.

• Photos can be posted on a portable storage device (memory stick) to Working on Country Photography Competition, PM&C Environment Branch, Lovett Tower, PO Box 6500 CANBERRA ACT 2600. A completed consent form must be included for each photo or photo series that is entered. Please supply a return address so that we can post the memory stick back to you.

• If a photo contains images of people, you must obtain consent from each person in the photo to take their image and to enter the photo into the Working on Country Photography Competition 2016.

• Prizes for the Working on Country Photography Award category and People’s Choice Award category will be awarded to the ranger group or IPA nominated on the Entry and Consent form. You must obtain consent from the nominated ranger group or IPA and from the organisation managing the ranger group or IPA to enter the photo into these two categories.

• We will contact you to acknowledge receipt of each entry. Email [email protected] if you require assistance with entry, including if you are submitting a large number of entries.

• Photos must have been taken later than 1 June 2012, the closing date for the previous Working on Country Photography Competition. You must submit your entry by 5pm AEST on Friday 8 April 2016.

COPYRIGHT

Copyright will be retained by the copyright owner (photographer or organisation). When using the photos, the Department agrees to include the photographer’s name and photo title. The Department will not enter into a commercial arrangement for the photograph or pay a usage fee to the photographer.
