Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur)

The University of Surrey will endorse up to 20 Surrey graduates, who have developed a genuine and credible business idea and who show entrepreneurial skills, to start their own business in the UK

Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur)

• an endorsement from the University of Surrey (25 points)

• a degree from the University of Surrey (25 points)

• a business plan endorsed by the University (25 points)

• English language proficiency (shown by degree) (10 points)

• migrant must meet Tier 1 maintenance requirements of £945 for 90 days in the UK or £1890 overseas (10 points)

please note, the endorsement letter is only valid for 3 months

Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur)

• Application fee currently £456 (£335 overseas)

• 12 months’ leave granted initially

• possible to extend for further 12 months if satisfactory progress has been made with the business, following formal interview and £500

• only restrictions on work are: no employment as doctor or dentist in training or as professional sportsperson (including coach)

• you can take work outside the business with no restrictions on number of hours

• migrant can sponsor dependants under PBS Dependants

• after two years migrant may switch into Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) with a minimum requirement of £50,000 funding from any source or switch into Tier 2

• Cannot apply if have already been on Tier 1 Post Study Work visa

Details of visa granted:

NEW – Immigration Health Surcharge (HIS)

You must make the payment before you submit or send your visa application (or book an appointment at a premium service centre) • Register to use the service • Pay online if you’re not exempt • Receive an email with an IHS reference number. • Write this on the cover sheet of your online visa

application or on the paper application form if applying by post. You need this reference even if you’re exempt from paying the healthcare surcharge.

• Finish your application form and pay your visa application fee

The fee is currently £150 for each entire year of your visa. Any additional months up to 6 months are charged at £75

The Sirius Programme, endorsed by the UK Trade and Industry (UKTI) Teams of 3 will be offered advice, funding of £12,000 each and help with immigration applications, plus worldwide publicity and marketing through UKTI contacts

One winner is TrueInvivo. Founded by University of Surrey Graduate, Shakardokht Jafari from Afghanistan and Iranian Shabnam Jamshidi, from Kingston University, TrueInvivo is a non-invasive cancer treatment solution. Shakardokht said: “The UK has a reputation for quality and innovation. We really appreciate the support that Sirius offers us – there is nothing like it in my home country. We plan to use the UK as a base from which to target other markets like the Middle East, India and China, and are confident the Sirius Programme will help us achieve our objectives.”

Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur)

If you are sponsored by a government or international scholarship agency, or if you have been sponsored by a government or international scholarship agency within the 12-month period preceding your application, your financial sponsor must confirm in writing that it unconditionally consents to this application.

This applies to any switching within the UK

Tier 1 (Investor)

• need to have evidence of £2 million to invest in the UK

• can switch from Tier 4 within the UK

• advised to apply through an immigration lawyer as the paperwork is complicated

• intend to establish, take over or become a director of a business in the UK within six months of application

• if you are already a Graduate Entrepreneur, you will need £50,000 investment funding from any source

• must have £945 in a bank for period of 90 days, ending no more than 1 month before application

• currently leads to settlement after 5 years (3 years if employ a certain number of people)

• migrants from Tier 4 can also switch into this category but much more difficult as there is a funding requirement of £50,000 acquired through a UK entrepreneurial seed funding competition or a UK Government department making funds available for the purpose of setting up or expanding a UK business, neither of which are readily available.

Tier 1 (Entrepreneur)

There is an opportunity for recent graduates to stay in the UK to work through Tier 2 (General). The benefits for you include:

• no advertising under the Resident Labour Market Test

• no quota restrictions, at least initially

• employer must have a Tier 2 licence (list available on UKVI site)

• post must be at graduate level or with a particular skills level

• minimum wage of £20,800

• visa granted initially for 3 years then 3-year extension

• can start the full-time job after application for Tier 2, while decision is being made – depends on start date agreed with employer and whether the company is willing to take a risk

Tier 2 (General)

Tier 2 (General)

• must have valid leave to study in the UK when you make the Tier 2 application

• must have “been awarded” your degree. You must therefore present your Degree certificate or an award letter which can be issued by the Academic Registry – [email protected]

• or have completed at least the first year of a PhD

• £945 in a bank for period of 90 days, ending no more than one month before application

• must have permission from previous official financial sponsor (not PBS sponsor) if you were sponsored during your degree programme

• if you are unable to apply before the expiry of your student visa, you will need to apply from outside the UK under normal Tier 2 rules

• application fee in UK - £651 for main applicant and each dependant

Applicants will need to meet following criteria

This enables students who complete their PhD in the UK, to stay for an additional year under Tier 4 to find work or set up a business

Timing is crucial as must be applied for in small period between submitting final bound thesis online and being awarded the PhD

Electronic submission of your final thesis before 15th of the month means you will be awarded at the end of that month. Submission after 15th = award at the end of the following month

Normal Tier 4 requirements apply

Application process:

• speak to the International Student Support (ISS) team when you have had your viva to calculate timings re corrections

• CAS will be issued by ISS once final bound thesis has been submitted

• visa application must be made before you are awarded your PhD – very small window (2-6 weeks only)

• maintenance requirements - £1,640 (from July 2014) in bank for at least last 28 days plus £920 (see above) for each dependant

• application must be made in UK whilst on valid Tier 4 visa – you may therefore need a new Tier 4 student visa while you are waiting

• Immigration Health Surcharge applies

• Candidates applying for the scheme in the UK must have a Tier 4 visa • Successful students can take jobs at an NVQ level 3 and above • There is no limit on the salary • Conditions of employment must be in line with the National Minimum Wage • The internship offered must be a full time placement • The Employer must on the UKVI Tier 5 register • Application fee is £225 and applicants must maintain a balance of £945 for 90

• dependants’ applications can be

included with your online application, or on a separate paper form, depending on the Tier

• application fees vary depending on the Tier and whether the application is made in or outside UK, with or without main applicant

NB: if you have family members with you in the UK but they are a student or worker in their own right and do not already have immigration permission as your dependants, they can apply to switch to dependant in the UK
