Working at HeightScaffold and Grating Platforms
Compiled by Rudi Nieuwoudt
Working at Heights
Scaffold Platform• Only Steel hook-on boards may be used for scaffold working platforms.
The boards must also be tied down with wire. Small wooden boards may be used only to fill gaps where hook-on boards cannot fit.
• Each scaffold platform must be fitted with toe-boards to prevent any object to be accidentally kicked off.
• Each platform must have safe access to it in the form of a ladder or staircase. In the case of ladders, a trap door will be installed and kept closed when not in use.
• There will be no gaps in the platform that could result in something falling though.
• Each platform will have guardrails consisting of a knee rail and hand rail. The Top rail will be at least 1m above the platform.

Fixed Grating Platform
• All Grating must be tied down with grating clips and fit snuggly into place.
• Grating must be fitted with kick plates to ensure no objects are accidentally kicked off.
• Grating platforms will have a cat ladder or staircase as access.
• Fixed handrails will be in place to prevent any fall.
• Should it be required to remove any piece of grating, the appropriate permit will be in place and area will be barricaded with hard barricading and warning signs will be placed to ensure people are made aware of the opening.
