Advanced Skills forLEADERSHIPCert i f icate Program Courses

The courses in the Advanced Skills for Leadership Certificate Program are approved for the Achieve-ment in Business Competencies (Blue Seal) Program through the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Department and for “CEUs” for Alberta Water/Waste Water Operators.

Most adult Canadians have heard about Walkerton, Ontario. The Walkerton name conjures up tragic reference to Canada’s worst drinking water failure event to-date. Seven residents died and 2,300 were made seriously ill in May 2000 when the town’s ground-water supply was compromised. In a commu-nity of 5,000 residents the cost-to-date is estimated to be $200 million in direct and indirect costs. In this session Bruce Davidson, a long-time Walkerton resident and Concerned Walkerton Citizens (CWC) co-founder, will combine a deeply-moving account leading up to, during and following the most serious period of the crisis. Bruce will detail how gaps in government, community and operations accountability for safe drinking water contributed to the contamination and delayed response. Bruce will detail how weather extremes can impact drinking water sources; how question-able diligence by officials at multiple levels can leave holes in regulatory safety nets and how rural utility operations and maintenance can break down over time.

Join us to have a better understand-ing of how the tragedy happened, what was learned from Walkerton so we can prevent this from happening in our communities and how municipal officials and commu-nity members can be more proactive about water. This event is being sponsored by the Closer to Home (C2H) Initiative (Alberta Water and Wastewater Operators Association) with funding support of the Rural Alberta Development Fund.
