Montgomery ResidenceRogersville, MO 2010Theworkshop 308Architect, Builder, Fabricator

The Montgomery Residence was designed and built for a retired public school officer looking to alternative means of construction along a bluff on the James River. Due to a modest budget, the goal of minimizing earth-work footprint, maximizing the view of the river, low maintenance, and dura-bility, the design explored the abun-dance of ISO shipping containers as a resource for their inherent structural integrity, and resource feasibility. The simple material palette yet different finishes allow for clearly designated living, working and playing zones. This project has humbly been featured in or on CNN Headline News, Waste Age Magazine, Turkey Country Maga-zine, 417 Magazine and various other regional publications.

The Coffee Ethic : Springfield, MO 2007Theworkshop 308Architect, Builder, Fabricator The three underlying values of The Coffee Ethic: Value the People, Care for the Earth and Respect the Cup, inspired us to challenge how customers experience coffee and give back to their community and the environment. The centerpiece of the design is the front application of the barista counter. The design was inspired by the organic nature of a shot of espresso flowing from the machine’s naked portafilter. The majority of the wood used in the overall design and furnishing, from the barista bar front application to the table tops, is from walnut trees that had fallen during the destructive 2007 southwest Missouri ice storm. Other design features include classic Thonet bent plywood chairs salvaged from a barn in Bourbon, Mo: and a community oriented gathering bench made of a 1200 pound, 20’ long structural beam salvaged from a 19th century cotton mill.

Project CoRE Housing CompetitionSpringfield, MO : First Place2011 Construction JPM Architecture, Architect

The Project CoRE competition was to design a1500 sq. ft. sustainable, single-family residence for $90,000 or less, con-textually compatible to the Midtown neigh-borhood that will be constructed by 15-17 year old at-risk youth from the Division of Youth Services in Springfield, MO.

This design embodies the mission of Proj-ect CoRE whereby the home itself symbol-izes a renewed sense of family and neigh-borhood while serving as an educational marker for social and environmental issues. The core structure of the home serves as both a functional utilitarian element and a conceptual identifier of the project’s mission. Passive thermal chimney ventila-tion, safe-room, centralized utility core and study space maximize footprint and mate-rial resources. Building methods respond to the compact footprint implementing grid-based construction modules for mate-rial efficiency and implement ICF and SIP wall systems. In addition, this home is designed under universal ‘barrier-free’ ADAGG guidlines. As first place recipient, this house will be constructed by at-risk youth stuents beginning March 2011.

Wilkerson Phi HouseToadsuck, AR2011 ConstructionJPM Architecture, Architect

The Wilkerson Phi House is a barrier-free, single family residence designed for a quad-rapallegic phyisical therapist and his aging family and one full-time assistant. As a mathmatically curious client the Phi ratio has been explored in every regard possible to inform programmatic and formal decisions of the residence. Three distinct programmatic spaces define programmatic desire: indoor living and entertainment, exterior entertain-ment, and vintage automobile work-space and storage. The design of the house allows all three to happen individually or simutane-ously.

Lotte Moolsan Super Tower : Seoul, Korea 2005 HO+K Inc. Design Architect

This 187,000 square meter mixed use ‘super tower’ includes a program of 116,000 square meters of office, 34,000 square meteres of 5 star hotel suites, restaurant, entertainment, casino, convention, and retail space. The proportions of the Lotte Super Tower iare dictated by client program, site, and height required to contain the program within the given site area. This principle design concept of this very tall and slender tower is driven by structural form of the bamboo forests of Korea. Similar to the growth rings of bamboo, the tall slender tower creates structural belts as it elevates through each building program.

Wrigley Global Innovation CenterChicago, IL 2006HO+K Inc. Construction Administration

With an architectural design that supports creativity and collaboration, the GIC is a critical part of accelerating the Wrigley vision. Located on Chicago's Goose Island, this LEED Gold certified, state-of-the-art office and R&D facility is designed to enhance the quality of the work environment and to foster innovation among Wrigley's people. The design features a diamond-shaped winter garden formed by two office wings and two lab wings. The winter garden is a year-round temperate space for business and leisure interaction. The office wings face the outdoor garden areas, while the lab wings are on the river's edge. The steel-and-glass main building features a soaring glass tension-cabled structure above an indoor winter garden. Its design integrates the diamond-shaped dome with the building frame by cantile-vering interior columns to provide vertical and lateral support. Structural floor framing provides additional support for the manufacturing processes and material movement that occurs within the pilot plant and for the plant's veg-etated roof. Long spans and a deep structure allow for a flexible, open floor plan that fosters teamwork within the lab-office spaces.

I strongly believe as a designer I must understand the materials I use to investigate my thoughts and curiosi-ties. My strong interest in materials and their inherent qualities is a reflec-tion of the importance I feel designers need to understand their medium and the narrative they afford.
