RAVENSWOOD BOATHOUSE4674 N VIRGINIA AVECHICAGO, IL 606253rd year studio

THE RAVENSWOOD BOATHOUSE IS an investigation in decent. The site, Jacobs Park, sits about 12 feet above the Chicago River, creating the complex problem of moving a 60 foot sculling boat from the road down to the river.

The Ravenswood Boathouse engages this issue of decent through a series of pivot points. The longest boats will experience these pivots while descend-ing to the river. While the remaining users, activities and structure of the boathouse also react to these crucial pivot points.

These reactions create a series of dynamic spaces for rowers and the public. These spaces include a workout facility, an outdoor patio, a lounge and a classroom space.

The experience of inhabiting these spaces takes people through an excit-ing series of events and turns. For the rower, the experience of moving the boats to the river level is a celebration of the sport of the boat itself. For the public, the lounge and classroom spaces are another series of turns in which the user experiences the pivots through changing activity and crossing paths.

The Ravenswood Boathouse is a facility that enhances the experience of travel-ing through a building and its site while celebrating the sport of rowing.

THE DIPLORAOFFICE AND HOTEL 300 E NORTH WATER STCHICAGO, IL 60611adv studio prof ROSS WIMER

THE DIPLORA OFFICE AND HOTEL TOWER is an investigation of aerodynamics and form. The Diplora looks at interacting with winds in an aggressive manner. Where the standard tall building takes a passive approach to dealing with wind by bracing for contact, the Diplora blatantly greets winds.

This interaction can best be described as channelling. When high speed winds meet the crawling facade of the Diplora, the wind is channelled and dispersed in many directions, decreasing the overall effect of the wind load.

This interaction was inspired by corals of the deep sea. Diplora Strigosa is a type of brain coral that interacts with water in a similar manner as this tower deals with wind. When Diplora Strigosa feeds it extends its polyps to catch plankton. The undulations of the coral’s “skin” forces the plankton to flow towards the polyups, which intern catch the plankton for feast.

The Diplora questions the reach of tall buildings. At the river walk the facade of the tower stretches out over the river walk park creating a dynamic urban setting. Pushing the limits on this idea of a tower’s reach, the Diplora extends across the river with its pedestrian bridge, creating an approach unlike any other in the city.

CAMP BOARDWALKCALDWELL WOODSW DEVON AVECHICAGO, IL 606462nd year studio TIMBER

CAMP BOARDWALK is a summer arts camp for 100 children and 10 camp instructors. The camp consists of 12 cabins, a gathering pavilion and several offices.

Camp Boardwalk is a summer camp designed for children. The camp space is a small city inside of Chicago. The camp is set up on grid with sleeping cabins placed in the grid of boardwalks.

The cabins house three functions, sleeping space, work space and an intermediate gathering space. This gathering space is where the camp blossoms with energy.

The boardwalk system intersects with this intermediate space so when it is recess or play time, the barn doors open up and children can run the boardwalk and pass through other campers cabins without interference.

In the areas where the board walks open up, trees fill the spaces with pleasant spaces for reading, gathering, meeting or sketching.

Camp Boardwalk seeks to create an open learning environment for children to pass ideas and knowledge from one to another. With these types of spaces and structures Camp Boardwalk becomes a city in the woods in the city. FIGURE A - Cabin Floorplan

CONVERGE MONASTERYCOLUMBUS, IN3rd year studio CONCRETE

CONVERGE MONASTERY is an inves-tigation of time and silence. Designed for 10-12 Trappist Monks, Converge is the product of a Trappist Monk’s weekly ritual.

The Monk’s ritual consists of many hours of private prayer, individual study and meals together with other monks. Because of this intense schedule, the monastery provides each monk with his own private cell, while all other spaces are laced in between. This creates a dynamic circulation that encourages interaction while still in silence.

The cells are spread out in a circle, in the middle of the circle is the chapter room/dinning room. This space sits about the alter of the church. This area is where the monks converge. The chapter room is the only space in which the monks can speak to each other, making it one of the most important spaces of the monastery.

The monastery holds sermon once a week where the public enters the mon-astery. The publics’ descent into the world of monks is an experience in the life of a monk. The long walk to enter the church is a passageway and time of meditation for church goers.

Converge Monastery is a space that celebrates individual prayer and com-munity spaces.

CORE HOUSE/STUDIOCHICAGO, IL 2nd year studio MASONRY

CORE HOUSE/STUDIO is designed for a graphic designer. The project con-sists of a studio space and a living space.

At the street front sits CORE STUDIO. Core Studio is where the graphic designer runs his office. There is a studio space on the third level, an office on the second level and a gallery on the ground level. Core Studio pushes the vertical circulation outside and around the three spaces creating a core of program space.

CORE HOUSE acts similarly but because of the added complexity of program of the house, the circulation is pushed to the north face of the house.

Core House separates circulation and living spaces through two large ma-sonry planes which provide privacy and interesting complementary spaces. These spaces include a roof garden on the second level and an out door patio space on the third level.
