I ’ve learnt to stop treat ing architecture as of pr iveleged forms and mater ials; thats the hal lmark of the str ic t ly disc ipl inary approach. I think i t is more real ist ic to star t with the problems of the people and the environment. A lvaro Vieira Siza

cartonerossocial club
Through the integration of neighborhood passions with centro verde functions providing a holistic approach to recycling within a dynamic social construct. Bridging the current gap between the community and the cartoneros, this project will provoke a new urban condition, in which social, cultural and athletic interaction negotiates a change in attitude and behavior with respect to urban detritus
The conceptual framework for the organization of program utilizes the train lines as the physical and poetic backbone engaging urban cohesion. Delineation between the green center and the social spaces is mediated with athletics as a unifying programmatic opportunity.

Understanding the site as a barrier against the natural function of the city grid, the implementation of connections bridging across the landscape will encourage dynamic interactions within the neighborhood, which are critical to foster a sustainable and vibrant community.

Opening the access cooridor from the park unto the neighborhood beyond, the project evolved as a bridge to engage the community with each other and with the concept of recycling. While the Centro Verde functions indepentently of the club program, the conversation is negotiated by the physical and visual connection of programs on the third level.

La plaza del molino
The informal setting that are created in urban spaces and mostly utilizing sidewalls of buildings and structures that exist in Mesa Arizona creates a cavity space. This gives a chance mostly to the Latino Communities in this area and street vendors to promote themselves by creating a variety of businesses. By these means “Plaza del Molino” encourages and engages in a urban setting in which merges between a plaza, park, market and its informal setting for any program in which the spaces can dictate.

Spanish speakers tend toward formality in their treatment of one another. A firm handshake is common practice between people as greeting and for leave taking. A hug and a light kiss on a cheek are also common greeting practices among women, and men and women who are close friends or family. The Spanish language provides forms of formal and non-formal address (different use of usted vs. tu for the pronoun you, polite and familiar commands). In non-formal settings, conversations between Spanish speakers are usually loud and rapid with animated gestures and body language to better convey points. Hispanics usually recognize and value looks and appearance as a sense of honor, dignity and pride. Formal attire is commonly worn by Hispanics to church, parties, social gatherings, and work. Gym shoes and jeans, however, are becoming more popular among Hispanic women, particularly in non-formal settings. Hispanics tend to be more relaxed and flexible about timeand punctuality .Within the Hispanic community, not being on time is a socially acceptable behavior. Hispanics tend to be reserved about public speaking because of their foreign accent. Plaza del Molino becomes a formal/ Informal setting for this population.

el barrio communty center
El barrio is derived from the spanish term meaning: of a outskirt district section of a large city, is the name of the new Community Center. El Barrio Community Center is located in the City of Phoenix between the North 7th Avenue/ Westland Avenue and West Coolidge Avenue. Since North 7th Ave is more oriented to single family house units and the Westland Avenue is oriented to comercial and small businesses, the building is located to the northwest side of the site providing a more welcoming entry through the community side so that people from the community can feel part of the site and get more involved in the different activities on site. This vacant lot was being used as a shorcut between avenues for the pedestrians of this neigborhood to get to their local destinations. I started to analyze these circulation patterns, how people traditionally have been using this space
Based on this idea my concept l ies on a diagonal l ine that intersects with other diagonal l ines from opposite sides and how they coll ide with each other creating patterns that always intersect. I wanted to keep an open space in the site so the people can maintain the same experience of walking through the site to get to their destination. In the hispanic culture it is traditionally accostumed to have outside spaces for gatherings.

By creating these intersecting patterns, pocket co-munities were formed in each pattern line. We can go through these paths and see the different groups of people gathering acording to their interest. Same dynamic happens within the structure of the building where the blocks intersect nd merge together us-ing different materials to emphasize or distinguish program elements within these spaces like a Boxing Gym, Fitness cente Skate Park, Basketball Court, Splash Pad, Picnic Areas, etc

phoenix pads
In the midst of an urban environment, Phoenix Pads project focused towards the community lifestyle within the busy lifestyle of a city in the desert. The main idea of Phoenix Pads is to bring people to a stronger community atmosphere than the usual, which means, community within the community. The individuality of the buildings in some way contributes to the mentality of sharing, considering that their access, as well as their shared circulation space, such as entries and steps connect with each other in many of the buildings. A community garden in one of the structures breaks the standard architectural pattern and allows further encouraging the community life for tenants and visitors.Like any contemporary project, green ideas influence decisions in many aspects in the design of this place. A gray water collection system allows the operation of a pond, which in turn is also fed by rain water that collects around, and travels along a small slope that mimics a natural wash. The use of solar energy in the community is proposed as a new alternative for energy use and savings. Besides, there is also green area and open spaces that meet the basics of green living and promotes the community life that Phoenix Pads offers.
