SIMBIOSI Architects is an international office of architecture, founded in 2007.During these years established itself as a leading practice with international teams of architects, urban designers, landscape architects and industrial engineers. Simbiosi Architects’ main office is based in the city centre of Athens (Greece), and has another office in Nuoro (Sardinia-Italy).With a multi-disciplinary approach to complex design issues, Simbiosi Architects develops concepts and visions for large and small-scale planning and design issues that address global or private issues.Working on an international level from its start, Simbiosi Architects developed projects mostly around Italy and Greece but keeping always a contact with the rest of Europe. The office gained recognition with various projects.Simbiosi Architects approaches the production of artificial, nature and tradition in SIMBIOSI (symbiosis). We act with an artifact being a part of a landscape, whether natural or artificial, keeping in consideration the traditions that confers identity and, therefore, understand the need for creating symbols in the production of a new landscape.

A new house for vacations nearby the sea.The project had many difficulties mostly generated by the really low badget. The house tries to be the essential of the “house” image that everyone has in his mind, strating from a pure volume with a 2 sides roof that when abitated open itself to the garden increasing the

living surfaces during summer season.

The project area lies in the heart of the historical center of Naples, in a strategic area for the presence of historical memory and the flow of tourists, cultural and business taking place inside. A place so important to the area in question makes a key point to solve the complex maze of the city of Naples.Leveraging on what are the real potential already present in the area, the project aims to reactivate this part of the city now degraded, but that already contains in itself all the elements for its rebirth. Everything is already there. To these existing systems will be added to the project, linked to the campus that is already a reality in the historical center of Naples through the creation of student residences with their services. The presence of students and the provision of new services linked to it, wants to become the engine for the reactivation of this specific part of the city involving the entire block with a view to upgrading overall, a sort of social housing that will also affect residents and will offer new services to the entire city.In order to activate this revitalization is necessary to act on the reconnection of the various systems in the area and currently not interconnected among themselves. A reconnection which aims to bring a reactivation of the ground floor that will involve the entire block, creating an internal practicability of the same, crossing over transversely at the input of the future forum of cultures, with the reopening of an old way of passage at the Courts of the church of Santa Maria della Sanità .The creation of this step is crucial for the realization of an important stopping place becoming the heart of the reactivation of the ground floors of all Vico

Maffei which in time will present itself as a sort of elongated square along which you will trigger a whole range of business functions and crafts. The strategy of reactivation of the groundfloor will go hand in hand with the redevelopment of the nearby ruins and building replacement that will provide the critical mass of the project, the more massive volume in which they’re going to put most of the functions related to the student residence, creating the main link with the second level of the project, that will take place on the roof. The project will act therefore basically on two levels : the ground floors and roofs, by introducing new volumes of the latter, in order to ensure a continuous practicability of the same. The volumes of the project will occupy the interstitial spaces and the entire block will contain not only new homes but also a further set of functions to service not only the student but the entire block in such a way as to ensure the activation of the distances of the project. The design of the facade thus obtained is placed in a neutral manner with respect to the rhythmic beat of the windows of the buildings twentieth century , relating directly with the tightness of the tufa walls of the ruins found on vico Maffei. The facade can be sealed and on it does not recognize ritmature other than those imposed by the scanning of the wooden panels , or completely open, and even in this configuration does not present ritmature other than those imposed by ceiling fixtures . The most probable configuration will be the one in which the random opening and closing of the wooden panels will create a shadow play both inside and outside without any specific plan .

The first goal we have set ourselves is to make the building more municipal accessabile, either visually and physically more transparent and permeable to the life of the city.

We then tried to establish contact between the Government of the ideal community and the community itself providing visibility and transparency of what happens inside the town hall reintroducing a typology based on morphological and spatial patterns of political places of Greek and Roman culture, taking the needs of today of a legislative administration participatory , open and close to the needs , ideas and community to action administered .

The reorganization of existing spaces thus becomes the need to adapt to modern technology, without changing the typical structure of nineteenth-century buildings, but innovating and enhancing it to return to the old city hall building, as it is preserved in the collective memory, but giving it a new force with the introduction of new structural elements .

Among the innovations is that - essential - to ensure complete accessibility for the disabled eliminating those architectural barriers that new building standards and regulations also impose for such historic buildings.

The new building should appear adaptable and versatile to every need and for every type of event that the building can host now or in the future: the new organization of the areas must be very flexible by giving the possibility to new items of furniture with simple and allow easy movement to change and adapt as the functions of the individual rooms.

From the structural point of view it was decided to improve the structure from the static point of view, without altering the existing structure damaged by time and the earthquake of 2012.

Main responsabilitiesFollow the project in all the stages from concept till the details, drawing 2D, modelling 3D. Directing the team in all the fases and taking the main decisions to complete the project.

The project is located in an existing house of the 60’s in a poor district of Athens where the need of structures and initiatives for children is really demanded.

The existing building develops on two floor and a terrace and in the back there is a small garden.

The project start from the point to don’t twist upside down the spaces and the style but still to make the restayling of the entire building with economic and modern solutions.

The groundfloor is thought as a more flexible space with a gallery/multifunctional room that works also as an entrance that bring the users to the garden and then to the 1nd floor and a cafe for the parents and relatives of the children that will

spend time in the structure.

The 1nd floor is thought instead with thematic room characterized by a storage wall, a “game-wall” and special tables for each room.

Museum of Underwater Antiquities

The grain storage station, which is located within the area of the Cultural Zone - Cultural Coast of Ietioneia coast of Piraeus Port Authority, will house the Museum of Underwater Antiquities, which will host the history of Greek shipping and the eternal relationship of the Greek people to the sea. The museum is situated inside an industrial building which functioned as a grain storage station from 1936 to 2009. The supply process and operation of the silo station inspires and sets the ground for the organization, function and programming of the Museum of Underwater Antiquities.

The grain storage station and disposal turns into a building for hosting, conservation and exhibition of archaeological findings. Thus the natural food storage, turns into a source of culture, history and knowledge. The core element in the design of the building is the exhibition of Underwater Antiquities, deployed inside the very heart of the building, in the area of storage cellswhile the rest of the building’s functions “hover” around that. The building’s volumeremains as introvert

as it was, sustaining though a narrative approach around the main exhibit, which happens to be a model of the hull of an ancient Greek trireme (Olympus).

The open public space surrounding the building is equally crucial to the completion of the design proposal for the museum. The programming of the functions, hosted throughout the open space, that form the functional structure is based on 3 key elements. The first one, that is the basic tool for organizing public space, is flora. The second oneis the memory that perforates historically the site. Finally the third elementis the provision for cycling, which is the main function sited that consolidates and delivers the coastal Ietioneias coastal front to the city of Drapetsona.

The main goal of the project is to achieve the reorganization of the surrounding spaces without modifying but enhancing it by giving back to the city centre a value that the old municipal building had removed obscuring the view of the lake.

It also seeks to restore the ideal contact that there was in the past between the government of the community and the community itself, giving visibility to what is happening in the town hall

proposing a typology based on morphological and spatial patterns of the places of the politics of Greek and Roman culture.

Eleftheria Square is placed in the edge of the historical center of Thessaloniki, close to one of the most vivid living areas facing the Thermaikos gulf. The design of the Square constitutes an experiential urban place with a highlighted identity both in the day and nighttime, in which the visitor comes up with different experiences and scenarios from time to time. The architectural design juxtaposes the strict monumental with the free organic, the artificial with the natural, the hard with the soft and the clumping with the liquid. The square is being designed as a huge ‘vessels’ that gathers the whole life of the city. Bounded, under the shade of trees, arranged linearly elongated living free form benches which offer an unobstructed view of the front of the city, the sea, the sky and the square itself. The square gradually degraded from the perimetric roads and the whole creates a tendency of introversion and isolation from the surrounding environment while leading passers in the “clearing” inside. At the same time, the downgrade compared to the Nikis Avenue allows direct contact with the sea passing under the bridge. The square ‘vessels’ has a double role. Simultaneously, functions both as a population gathering and as a natural rainwater collector. This precious water is stored, filtered and then attributed back to the visitors for unique esthetic experiences and for watering the greenery. The square has the ability to store as much water

as needed to flood the square till sea level and form this way the natural continuation of the sea that seems to invade the square, inviting viewers visitors to watch it as it fills and empty itself. It is worth noting that in 1870, that began the demolition of the seaside fortifications of the city in an effort to modernize the Ottoman Empire, the sea reached the middle of the square. In the center of the square to the bottom level (-2.20) is situated the Jewish Memorial as a reference to the Jewish community that in the mid-16th century was so important to make Thessaloniki be the Jewish center of East-Europe, where persecuted Jews from all over Europe came to live a normal life. On April 9th, 1941 when the first military convoy of Germans came to Thessaloniki began persecutions. All Jewish men aged 18 to 45 were ordered to appear in Liberty Square to be mobilized for forced labor. The day, from 6000 to 7000 of them gathered together under the hot sun until afternoon, surrounded by soldiers with automatic weapons. Within ten weeks 12% of those who were led there, had died. In an attempt to highlight the historicity of the square is implemented this space “monument”. Simultaneously, the monument was placed on the ideal link with the Jewish Museum across Rogoti street.

The proposal in terms of the functions and uses provided has been directed toward the creation of a system that can provide continuity in a spatial meaning - overcoming the gap of the road – and temporal meaning - surpassing the seasonality – the use of the various parts of the compendium. In this perspective, natural areas become the connective element that includes a path “art in nature” that develops on both sides to upstream and downstream of the coastal road. The set routes and facilities is one public space discrete,

diffuse and polycentric, that offer to the visitors experience of the place not only contemplative but enhanced and enlarged interaction also with artistic interventions closely linked to the place itself.

The park Tanca Manna is identified mainly by the existence nuraghe. And the nuraghe is the engine of the concept of requalification, together with the idea of making the park more “accessible” to children, but not only, with a path “ludo-educational” about the resources of Sardinia.

There is a game for children formed by a series of stacked colored wooden rings that form a truncated cone which refers to the image of nuraghe, formed by a series of rows of stones.

The combination of these two elements creates the concept of the project realized with the creation of some stone rings around trees or rocks in strategic locations in the park to form a path to discover botanical species and stones of Sardinia.

Today the exposition area is composed by a palimpsest of old structures made at different times of the post-war period and the 80’s or so, and as historical stratifications, have created a diversity and a lack of unity within the area.Buildings that have a architectural quality to be enhanced and additions that have been made without respecting, again, the original architectural style.Overall, the buildings appear today in a bad state of repair, such as boxes worthless, used sporadically.

We have created a “red carpet” in its unfolding

that invites the public to get in the space of the exposition and guide him to the visit, sending them between the existing buildings without altering or touching them, on the assumption that it is better to keep existing buildings that have architectural qualities rather than demolish them and build others from scratch.

The competition aim was to regenerate 18 spots in the city centre of Nuoro. Small parts of the historic settlement such as small squares, urban staircases, narrow streets, ... .All the spots where divided in four routes: literature, art, handicraft and landscape. All this trying to follow a unique idea that could unify all these spots and be recognizable in one urban project. We wanted to share the objective to upgrade and enhance many areas of the city. Unused spaces, not appreciated for the degradation which has been the subject for both the poor quality or lack of practicability that characterizes themself.

Our goal was to turn on the “fires”, fires of interest, awareness, re-appropriation, reconsideration of places, just like the “Janas” in the Sardinian mythology.Fires to attract people, events, attention and generate meetings and discussions between generations, cultures, ethnicities, values.

The two centers of Tortoli and Arbatax have developed in different socio-cultural and historical periods. In particular in they have two different souls: the “sea” for Arbatax and the agriculture for Tortoli’.The two identities must remain so and the new expansion of the city should be oriented to the recovery and consolidation of the existing built area around the old town taking advantage of the presence of some structural limits such as the Riu Corongiu and the ring.

The relationship between the two entities can be harmonized and consolidated with the prediction of a green “corridor” crossing the few untouched spaces still existing between the two centers.

The Academy of Athens is the Greece’s national academy, and the highest research establishment in the country. It was established in 1926, and operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. The Academy’s main building is one of the major landmarks of Athens.

In 2010 the Academy decide to hold an architectural competition between four architectural firms for the project of a new office building nearby the

main building in the heart of Athens. Our proposal was to try to maximise the square meters of the building and then to cover it with a bioclimatic skin and brise-soleil that perfectly answer the sun irradiation during the year.

Inspired by shear and torsion generated by the blow of the ax on the piece of wood, FASCIA seeks to postpone the eye of the common archetypes of tradition and imagination of the wood: the bundle, the union, the strength and solidity that generates around a table.FASCIA also tries to be current and modern movements suggesting a forward lean and a sense of instability that unfortunately is denominator of our times.FASCIA is a clean break between the two materials: wood and steel , the eternal dichotomy between old and new, solid roots and uncertain future, where, however, the movement is the only hope to continue to stay on his feet. The project will look with minimalist and syncretic form of concentrate in the strength, stiffness and elegance of natural wood with a simple design and slim steel dry, but that through the idea of a disruptive external force (that of ax) breaks the orthogonality of the line and triggers a twisting motion that perfectly matches its elastic

properties. The image and the contrast of colors to which we refer is that of the ax blade that penetrates the wood and that somehow immobilizes him, the project represented by the metal blades that form the legs of the table and that they attach themselves to embracing it, wrapping and breaking into four cuts that are generated on the edges of the wooden table. Its creation requires relatively simple processing such as cutting and milling the wood and bending and welding metal parts, however, although the forms are easy, the details executed with great precision and skill allow to achieve the clarity and cleanliness needed to make this object perfect and of great value.

To enlighten an interior space itself would be enough only a light source, a light bulb for instance. With this in mind we thought about what a lamp actually is.

According to us it is a dress for the lamp itself, that can have different functions, the aesthetic one at first, and then to direct the light in a certain direction or just filter it.

Our project starting from these assumptions is presented as a dress for the body of the light, a corset, which surrounds the light source, by making it attractive and intriguing.

The main material of the lamp is the ceramic that being treated with a glossy texture inside and matt in the outside so to be able to reflect as many light as possible and reach a good level of illumination. The string is a leather wire with squared section that can be in different colors. For holding the bulb a special plastic piece is insered in the top of the mainbody of the lamp.
