Please Email newsletter submissions to: Becky Geoghagan at [email protected]

Due Date is each Tuesday by 5:00pm

I hope everyone has had a great summer. It is that time of year again to start turning in all your Box Tops and Campbell's soup labels. Last year our school earned $4,977.39 for submitting Box Tops. I hope to beat that number this year. Our first submission date will be November 1st so I'm asking for all Box Tops to be turned in to your child's teacher by October 21st. Please place all Box Tops and labels in a baggy and include your child and teacher's name on the baggy. You can also turn them in by the mini auditorium in the Box Top box. Please feel free to email me

with any questions.

Don’t let the phone blind you! As many of you know the PTA began this year with a pledge not to text or talk while driving around the campus. At first glance it’s hard to see the dangers, as we are all guilty of this at some point in our lives. In this day and time we are all looking for ways to multitask and making a few calls or texts while waiting to drop off and pick up the kids has become one of those ways. In the hustle and bustle of today’s world we

are all just trying to keep our heads above water.

Did you know that 60% of drivers use cell phones while driving? When sending or opening a text your eyes are off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. That’s plenty of time for a child to stumble into the road unseen! Please take a minute to read the

statistics and see if that call or text is truly that important.

Girl Scouts Invite YOU to join the fun!

At Girl Scouts, girls have new experiences that inspire them to look forward to what they’re going to do today, tomorrow and ten years from now by helping them realize that they can be anything they want to be. For the girl in your life, a year with us will be filled with new friends, tons of fun, and more “wow” mo-ments than she’s ever imagined. The kind of moments she just can’t wait to tell you about. It all starts with one meeting, and a

few volunteers who believe in the power of every girl.

Girl Scouts is open to all girls ages 5-17 and all adults over 18. Find out what local Girl Scouts are doing, sign up and join the fun! Call toll-free 877-764-5237 or visit girlscouts-gateway.org

today!

We are looking for volunteers to be leaders. In order for a girl to become a leader herself we need volunteers to lead them the way to leadership. Please contact us if you are interested in being part of Girl Scouts.

Carline Signs are Here!

By now all families with an afternoon car rider have received a carline sign. The signs are dry erase so they can be used year after year, but, if you accidentally use a permanent marker on them, we have a list of tried and true methods for removing permanent ink from our fabulous Loretto teachers: 1. a small amount of soft scrub cleaner, 2. rubbing alcohol, 3. hair spray, 4. writing over the permanent ink with a dry erase marker and then wiping off, 5. baby wipes, and 6. sanitizing wipes. Loretto PTA thanks the business partners (listed on back of sign) who made this practical, beautiful sign possible and, best of all, cost free to our families and Laura Watson for her hard work on this project.

Drivers that use cell phones are four times more likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves (NHTSA). Driving while distracted is a factor in 25%

of police reported crashes.

Five seconds is the average time your eyes are off the road while texting. When travelling at 55mph, that’s enough time to cover the

length of a football field.

Using a cell phone while driving, delays a driver’s reactions as much

as having a blood alcohol level at the legal limit of .08.

Guidance Counselor Corner

Ideas to keep in mind:

1. Establish routines in the home for morning time, homework, chores, and bedtime. Motivate your child to want to follow routines by providing praise, point systems, and

earned privileges.

2. Encourage self-reliance. Listen when your child expresses frustration with a homework assignment or with a friend or teacher. Instead of telling your child how to solve

the problem, help guide them to a possible solution.

Volunteer Information

From DCPS:

To ensure the safety of our students, volunteers must complete an application and undergo a criminal background screening, free of charge, conducted by our department. Designated school staff will verify your clearance to volunteer at the school using our online process. DCPS is no longer using volunteer cards as a proof of

clearance.

Important Reminder for Volunteers

Volunteers, don't forget to log any hours spent

volunteering at school in the volunteer log located in the main office. Keeping track of the hours spent

documents our parent involvement. These hours spent represent the amount of work that could not have been

completed with out you. Hours spent at home

completing tasks for teachers should also be logged.

The school can win an award for the most parent

involvement. Lets win that award!

Volunteers help make Loretto a great school!

Thank You

Sunshine Math! Would you like to teach math to your child's class

once a week? Talk with your teacher about being the class Sunshine Math volunteer! Volunteers spend about 30 minutes a week in the classroom reviewing math worksheets distributed by the teacher, and then keep score of

"stars" earned by each student.

Sunshine Math is a great way to be involved and get to know the students in your child's class. Watch for program orientation information coming soon. Feel free to contact Barb Kransi at [email protected] or 904-234-6769 if you have questions or want more information.

teachers if they are still in need of classroom volunteers. We have

many teachers who are still looking for Homeroom Parents, as well as

Sunshine Math, Art Appreciation, Character in Action, and Where in

the World Volunteers. Our wonderful Loretto teachers need you and being a classroom volun-

school. Please see below for a list of volunteer needs.

AR Store Donations The AR store needs your gently used books
