DESCRIPTION
This is my basic weekly routine for the Word Work component of The Daily 5. I only teach Monday to Thursday so you may need to adjust it to meet your classroom needs. I use Words Their Way as a basis for my Word Work program in a grade 1/2/3 split class.

Word Work Monday BEFORE STARTING -Give students the words their way “spelling inventory” assessment -Have word work scribblers ready to go - Have sight word duo-tangs/ folders ready to go -Smarboard file with example sort for each week -Sight word slides Wholebrainteaching.com - 1 copy of each sort to add to Word Work Center - 100 Word wall words perhaps 1000 words - super speed partner chart – Copy super speed pages (1 per group) –word work group chart - Print sight word songs - bags to store sorts
1) Place kids into word work groups based on “spelling inventory” assessment. Stress getting into groups quickly (without running)! Class-‐ yes Prompt : WORD GROUP 3-‐peat: word group, word group, word group. Students try to get there without running, within the three repetitions.
2) I hand out proper word sorts to the right groups
3) In groups (before cutting), students will look at the words/ sounds I’ve given, have students talk about the similarities and differences and decide on the sort rules for the week. “10 finger woo” when they think they have them. I’ll check before they write them down and if correct sent them back to their desks. [I hand out Ziploc bags onto desks while they are meeting in groups ]
4) Back at desks, students will look at the smart board for example
pattern rule layout, and pattern if needed. (cover with shade to start with) color coordinated with each group’s colors. Students write down their pattern rules in a t-‐chart format on a new page in their Word Work scribbler (neatly!)
5) Cut apart word sort (at their desk) so pieces don’t get mixed
together; places them in their bags. When done practice sorting, again and again if needed (repetition is good!)
6) Put sorts back into baggies, put baggies away (keep scribbler), hand out sight word duo-‐tangs.

7) Review todays sight words with Biffy-‐Toons /actions, practice
spelling with songs on smart board.
8) Add sight words to personal dictionary, or highlight if already in, and add sight words to Word Work scribbler spelling list (if done early practice reading/ spelling your sight word over and over until the class is ready to move on. Set timer, for really slow students add this task to their writing time.
9) Super Speed 100 with their assigned partners (pair high with
low)
10) Class-‐ yes Prompt: Away
11) 3-‐peat: away, away, away (students put their word work scribblers and duo-‐tangs away)
12) Review at the carpet & move into Daily 5 block/ Check-‐in Store together in the classroom

How to Play Super Speed Reading 100

√ Helping is encouraged, if a partner gets stuck √ Read for 1 min. √ Try to break their record
1) Partner 1 reads the first word, partner 2 reads the second word and they continue like that as fast as they for 1 min. 2) Say stop after 1 min. 3) Teams circle the last word they read 4) Teams start over with partner 2 starting this time and try to beat their previous # of words read, trying to break
that ream record (may have to go 3 times for groups of 3)
** When a team breaks a record, they start the next level down the next time they play! J
Word Work Tuesday: Say, Sort & Write (or Glue)
1) Review sight words from yesterday using Biffytoons for the
first 50 some words (wholebrainteaching.com). Sing yesterday’s sight words.
2) Review sound sort rules from yesterday. Review each sort
with the whole class. 3) Class-‐Yes
Prompt: handout, word sort 3-‐peat: handout, word sort, handout, word sort, handout, word sort (helping hands hand out word sorts)
4) Students independently pull out their bolded pieces and put them at the top of their desks. Students pull words or pictures 1 at a time and say the word or picture and place it in the correct column
5) Write words/ letters under the correct headings or cut apart
mini sort and glue them in. (students will put sorts back in bags and practice sorting. Lave scribbler open so that I can check work as I walk around (If done early, older students can also do speed sorts to see if they can beat their previous times)

Word Work Wednesday: Buddy Spell

Prompt : hand out: word sort bags 3-‐ peat: Word sorts, word sorts, word sorts.
4) explain that Wed. is Buddy Spell day. That today they are going to get with a partner of my choosing and practice their word sorts together. Show them how this will look. Placing their bolded words at the top, placing a pile in the middle, each drawing a card reading the word, the others spelling it, and 1’s partner placing it into the correct column. Give another person a change to go first. If your done, do it again until I call you back.

Prompt: Partner sticks 3-‐peat: Partner sticks, Partner sticks, Partner sticks -‐Each student will line up in front of me and choose a stick, they will then walk around and find a person with the same color, there may be a group of 3

Word Work Thursday: Spelling Test/ Assessment Day
1) There are no new sight words on Thursday. Use partner sticks to practice spelling this weeks sight words/ songs actions
2) Ask word work groups to meet and play buddy spell with the whole group. Place cards in the middle, 1st person reads it, the group chorally spells the word, and the other group members sort the word. Steps 1 and 2 10 min total.
3) Hand out spelling test page
4) Begin spelling test give the students their spelling sort words
5) Give students their sight words for the week
