Just a bit from Fr. Schmidt
It’s Lent: Go Ahead, Indulge
With the Sta(ons of the Cross being a favorite devo(on of this (me of year, we also have many opportuni(es to gain the plenary
indulgence aBached to it. Here’s a refresher on indulgences, largely quoted from “General Remarks on Indulgences” of The Gi of the
Indulgence (2000):
“An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the
faithful Chris(an who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed condi(ons through the ac(on of the Church which, as the min-
ister of redemp(on, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the sa(sfac(ons of Christ and the saints.”
So the first thing to be clear about is that indulgences do not obtain forgiveness of the guilt of sins. That is what Confession is for, in
the case of grave sins. “To gain indulgences, whether plenary [full] or par(al, it is necessary that the faithful be in the state of
grace at least at the (me the indulgenced work is completed.
“A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day.” In order to obtain a plenary indulgence, the faithful must, in addi(on to being
in the state of grace:
—have the interior disposi(on of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin;
—have sacramentally confessed their sins;
—receive the Eucharist in Holy Communion;
—pray for the intenons of the Supreme Ponff.
“It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope’s
inten(ons take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers
be carried out within several days (about 20) before or a$er the
indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope’s inten(ons is le$ to the
choice of the faithful, but an Our Father and a Hail Mary are sug-
gested.
“One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indul-
gences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer
for the Holy Father’s inten(ons are required for each plenary
indulgence.” So, theore(cally, someone who goes to Confession
every forty days, prays for the Pope’s inten(ons daily, receives
Communion daily, and daily performs a work having a plenary
indulgence aBached is able to obtain a plenary indulgence once
every day.
“Indulgences can be applied either to oneself or to the souls of
the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living
on earth.”
Deserving of special men(on are the following works, for any one
of which the faithful can gain a plenary indulgence each day of
the year: adora*on of the Blessed Sacrament for at least one half
an hour; devout reading of the Sacred Scriptures for at least one
half an hour; the pious exercise of the Way of the Cross; the reci-
ta(on of the Marian Rosary in a church or public oratory or in a
family group, a religious Community or pious Associa(on.
Word of Life “We are facing an enormous and dramatic clash between good and evil, death and life, the ‘culture of death’ and the ‘culture of life’. We find ourselves not only ’faced with’ but necessarily ‘in the midst of’ this conflict: we are all involved and we all share in it, with the inescapable responsibility of choosing to be uncondi-tionally pro-life” (The Gospel of Life 28).
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the unborn, pray for us. St. Joseph, patron of the unborn, pray for us.
