CANINE: One of the paintings of Fritz that were sold for 450.WO shapely pieces of Georgian mahogany furniture which took top honours in a packed saleroom at a recent Cotswold Auction Company sale held in Gloucester. The first was a handsome George III mahogany serpentinefronted chest with three long drawers. Measuring only 94 cm wide, it would be easy to accommodate in any drawing room. There is a premium on any shaping of furniture, which requires extra skill from the cabinet maker, such as a serpentine-front, and this helped the chest race past its estimate to come under the hammer at 880. Similarly a fine French Empire secretaire chest, also serpentinefronted, found a ready buyer at 750. This was fitted with a secretaire drawer, all inlaid with mother-of-pearl scrolls. Also in the furniture section Windsor stickback elbow chairs attracted lots of attention. They were in original condition, some with desirable yew hoops and crinoline stretchers. One matched pair came sold for 500 and the other at 380. A small Georgian mahogany bowfronted chest of drawers exchanged hands for 350, while an oak chest of revived 17th century style with geometric

TOPS: The Edwardian marquetry inlaid table that sold for 300.head of a dog called Fritz attracted several telephone bidders as well as much interest in the room and realised 450, while two still lifes of cooking ingredients on a rustic table by Vittorino Rossi made 300 and 260 respectively. The surprise of the day was a highly collectable Royal Copenhagen porcelain bowl painted with trailing floral decoration, which attracted a great deal of online interest from collectors all over the country. This was initialled CHX and was the subject of spirited bidding, which culminated in a hammer price of 500. A fine pair of Imari vases and covers, 43cm high, made a respectable 290 while two handsome Chinese porcelain tankards sold well at 260. Meanwhile 11 Chinese blue and white porcelain plates decorated with flowers and butterflies came under the hammer at 230. One coin collector was happy with a large quantity of half crowns, principally George VI, for which he needed to pay 520, a figure which once again exceeding the auctioneers expectations.

A late Victorian small pedestal desk sold for 400 and an attractively inlaid Edwardian marquetry mahogany occasional table with a circular top reached 300 from a telephone buyer. Several tripod tables, which are always popular pieces, sold well. The sale also included an interesting collection of oils and watercolours from a house near Stroud, Gloucestershire. Principal among these was a watercolour by Bonomi Warren, a harvesting scene with figures in a cornfield, dated 1890, which again exceeded its estimate and sold for 680. Internet bidders snap up watercoloursINTERNET bidders were keen to acquire two significant watercolours in a recent sale organised by the Cotswold Auction Company at Bingham Hall, Cirencester, Gloucestershire. The first was attributed to Edward Lear (1818-1888). It was an 1886 study of The Verdala Palace, Malta, and despite lacking a signature, sailed past its estimate to reach 1,100. The second was a watercolour by David Roberts of Venice, signed and dated 1859, and it came under the hammer at 1,000. Other oils included two 17th century portraits, realising 700 and 650 each, a George Chinnery scene of figures beside a river, selling for 680 and an oil on panel after Phillips Wouvermans of a horseman and two peasants on a hillside, realising 600.
