Christmas Event Planning Volunteers Needed!

We will have our first meeting of the year Tuesday at 7P in the home of Terry Buckner at 9207 Brahms Ln.  Our first annual celebration that took place last yr was a great success and we look to have much the same type of celebration this year. It takes a lot of work to put it together, decorate, solicit donations etc, so we need volunteers...WE NEED YOU!   I believe all volunteers from last year are returning, and we have had some other residents express interest in joining. We welcome ALL help, and even if your time is limited, I’m sure we can find an area in which you can lend a helping hand.  Some of the sub committees  we have are:

1) Entertainment  2) Decorating  3) Lights on the Lakes  4) Food   5) Children’s activities  6)  Sponsor and Donation  Solicitation  7) Whatever else we decide on.  If you have questions or need further information, please contact me

at 832 803 9214 or [email protected]  If you can attend this meeting please RSVP at [email protected].

Woodwind Lakes

We once heard someone remark that weather in Texas is “simply drought interrupted by the occasional flood”. It seems to ring true when one looks back to the recent past. The worst drought in the state’s history ended this year, with a “memorable” Memorial Day weekend storm . Depending where you lived, 6- to 11-inches of rain fell causing flooding comparable to that of Hurricane Ike in 2008. A number of record hot summers and low rainfall years preceded June 2001’s Tropical Storm Allison. It dumped more than 35 inches of rain in 24 hours over most of Harris County.

If your lawn and garden are still showing evidence of being affected by all that May rain, it’s most likely due to a decrease in the number of beneficial soil microbes and worms, i.e. “being washed out” by the heavy rains. You can help increase their number by applying an organic fertilizer. The microbes feed on the fertilizer, breaking it down into useable form for grass roots. The worms also feed on the fertilizer, also leaving their castings for the microbes to turn it into a useable form for the grass roots. The worms’ tunneling is also nature’s rototiller, allowing air spaces for roots to grow into.

But by July it should return to being a typical Houston summer. Hot, humid weather -- feeling like you’re walking through a sauna. The only thing you want to do is to come home and enjoy a nice cool drink while sitting in the swimming pool. Well, birds feel the same way. They seek out shallow areas of water to wash out the dust in their feathers, and quench their thirst. Your subdivision’s retention pond is too deep for them to use. So make sure that you have a birdbath that hold 1- to 2-inches of water. Keep it full, whatever the birds don’t use will almost evaporate overnight. The birds will reward you by staying in your yard and eating those pesky grasshoppers, mole-crickets, sowbugs and a host of other insect thugs.

In mid-July the Trumpet vine, Cupheas, and Turks Cap are putting on quite a show. Means it’s almost time for hummingbirds! July is not too late to plant hummingbird attracting plant like Esperanza, Texas Star Hibiscus, Autumn Sage. Just choose to do so either early in the morning or late evening, when it’s cooler for you. They’ll establish quickly and you’ll be rewarded with a show by both the plants and Hummingbirds. A few years ago we had to move a mature 5-foot tall Mexican Firebush from an established bed to a 30-gallon container. It happily bloomed in the container attracting Hummingbirds until we could transplant the shrub in its new location in the fall.

It’s not too early to hang hummingbird feeder(s) to attract these “glittering fragments of the rainbow”. You’ll be emulating the gracious host/hostess who always has refreshments on hand for friends that drop by. Just make sure to change the solution every few days so that it doesn’t spoil. The hummingbirds will also appreciate that birdbath for source of water for drinking (yes, they need and drink water) and taking a much needed bath.

As always, please visit www.rcwnurseries.com for the latest gardening tips and events.

Happy Gardening!
