This week our year 3 and year 5 students complete NAPLAN. This is an
opportunity to celebrate all the learning our students have acquired and to see how
they perform against the Nation at a single point in time. NAPLAN can cause much
anxiety for our students but there are many ways to support them; a good night
sleep, healthy food, removing the media that talks about NAPLAN and
encouragement can reduce the concerns for participants. As Friday is the Ipswich
Show holiday, Monday 20th May will also be the catch-up day. We wish you all the
very best of luck.
With the cold weather more apparent I would like to remind parents of the uniform
requirements of jumpers. School jumpers are available to purchase at the uniform
shop or alternatively plain navy blue jumpers can be purchased from clothing outlets.
School will be closed this Friday due to the Ipswich Show Holiday. I hope as a family
you are able to enjoy this opportunity to share time together and maybe even enjoy
the show.
I would like to introduce Rebecca McDonald who is our new Head of Pedagogy.
Rebecca is joining us from Warrigal Road State School and is replacing Clint
Gallagher who is now the Acting Deputy Principal. A reminder if you would like to
see a member of the Admin team to phone the office who can arrange an
appointment for you. Please do NOT walk into the private office area to search for
staff. Your help with this matter is appreciated.

Last week our students were told about the end of term celebration for this term. Our students
were very excited to learn the inflatable obstacle course will be back in week 10!
In order for students to attend, they must have less than three behaviour incidents for the term. If
students do have an incident, they have the chance to 'buy back' the incident by having a whole
week of perfect behaviour. Now is a good chance for you to check in with your child and their
teacher to see how they are going so far this term.

NEWS FROM THE YEAR 1 COHORT
WoodLinks Newsletter 15 May 2019
English
This term, Year One students are describing Aaron Blabey characters using nouns, verbs and
adjectives. They are exploring the character’s personality traits, appearance and actions. So far,
students have been working collaboratively to create resources that demonstrate their understanding
in a learner centred approach. Students have been practising writing their simple and compound
sentences to display their knowledge of the character.
Maths
Our focus this term is largely targeted around students number awareness and retrieval of number
facts. In Year One, we cover a vast number of mathematical concepts each term which is reflected in
our weekly homework tasks. Each week a mathematical activity is included to consolidate their
learning.
Science
We are building boats! Students have been investigating the properties of different materials to identify what is best suited for different purposes. As the term progresses, we are going to be moving
towards incorporating some technology elements into our learning such how the properties of
materials can be changed, joined and shaped through investigation. A note will be sent home shortly listing
a number of items that can be donated to assist students in their investigations and boat building.
Harold’s Friendship Incursion
The Life Education team will be visiting WoodLinks in weeks 5 and 6. Year One will be attending the
Harold’s Friendship sessions. Information regarding payment and permission slips was sent home last
week, please ensure this is returned promptly by the due date stated on the form. This will be a great
program to complement our Health unit that was recently completed in which we explored personal
strengths and diversity of others’ strengths.

Do you struggle to find the funds for Excursions / Incursions / SRS?
Do you receive Centrelink Payments?
If so: are you aware that you can set up a deduction from your Centrelink fortnightly payments to
come to the school? If you are interested in finding out more or how to set up this deduction please
come into the office. We are also awaiting discussion with the P&C to see if it can include Uniforms
and book packs (obviously a credit amount would be required before being able to use these funds
for this).
