Canada Helmet Initiative
Thanks to those who have participated
in supporting the Canada Helmet Ini-
tiative. This program enables students,
staff and parents to purchase quality
winter sports helmets (cycling and
multi-sport) at affordable prices . Last
call for payment
and forms—
helmets should
be delivered to
the school by April .
With so many days of extreme cold
weather conditions, we are hoping that the
month of March will bring us some
Spring weather! Until then, please make
sure that your children are dressed appro-
priately for the cold. Hats, mitts, scarves,
coats, boots and snow pants are recom-
mended.
Thank-you for your support in our com-
munity fundraiser this month: the EFN
Change for Children coin collection to
raise money for families in DSBN in need
of poverty or emergency financial help.
We are still calculating the grand total and
we will post it in next month’s newsletter.
This month, our students in grades 4 to 8
will take part in a school climate survey,
―Tell Them From Me.‖ in library class
with me. I will be sending home an infor-
mation sheet regarding this survey this
month.
Thanks to all of our parent volunteers .
We are so lucky to have such a supportive
community who help us with fundraising,
hot lunches, volunteering in classrooms
and with the reading program, coaching teams,
driving sports teams, supervising on field trips
and participating on our parent advisory commit-
tee.
Students in Grades 3 and 6 have been taking part
in a short mid-year practice assessment in Math
(Language was done previously). Students and
teachers will be able to use the results to get ef-
fective feedback on what we can do to prepare
further for the EQAO assessments in May/June.
The DSBN school year calendars designate
March 7, 2014 as a Professional Activity Day
and traditionally, teaching staff participate fully
in professional learning activities on days such
as March 7, 2014. However, based upon the
agreed to Memorandums of Understanding, per-
manent contract teachers in both elementary and
secondary schools will be taking March 7, 2014
as a mandatory unpaid day and will not be at
work. All other staff will be at work as regu-
larly scheduled participating in site based work
responsibilities. "
Thank-you again for your continued support, we
hope you and your family have a safe and fun-
filled March Break!

Have you heard about DREAM BOX?
Woodland has purchased Dream box Learning’s Math Program for Grades 1 –8, an
online, Intelligent Adaptive Learning ™ program that helps all students achieve better,
faster math proficiency. It is extremely important that you do not help your child while
they are working through a lesson. The program will eventually adjust to your child’s
level. It is also important that they finish each lesson that they have started and that they
are the only one using their account. Our subscription lasts all year, which means it is
available all summer long! The students should know their login and password. Your
student can access Dream box on our school website! It’s available 24 hours a day, 7
days a week! This is a great homework activity for all Woodlanders!

Woodland Supports Pink Shirt Day—
Wednesday, February 26th
Woodland supported the message, “Bullying Stops Here!”
again this year when several of our students and staff
dressed in pink shirts on Feb. 26th. Students reviewed the

stand against
bullying by
taking part
along with
many others
across our
country.

Creative Minds 2014 is coming back to Woodland this spring! I’m
excited to see how all of you will get involved with this year’s
theme: “Celebrating Niagara”
Celebrating Niagara can be displayed in so many of our categories. Build the Welland Canal out of Lego, or wood – take pictures or draw/paint many of the beautiful vineyards, nature hikes, fruit orchards in full bloom or in full harvest. Make Brocks Monument out of any material that you can imagine! Write a story about your favourite place or person in Niagara. Cook or bake up something yummy that can only be found or grown in Niagara! The possibilities are endless and the creativity is to-tally up to you! Go out and explore Niagara and come up with an entry that will help us all celebrate Niagara – a beautiful place to live J

Congratulations to the February students of the
Month. They were recognized for the character trait
of OPTIMISM. A special presentation featuring the
dramatization of Pete The Cat and His Magic Sun-
glasses was made by Mrs. Masterson’s Grade 1/2
class which included the main message, ―With a
positive outlook on life, you can transform a grumpy
day into an awesome day!‖ Prior to the assembly we
enjoyed the uplifting songs , I Love My White Shoes
and Rocking in My School Shoes on the announcements. The intermediate basketball teams and junior
basketball teams were acknowledged by Mr. Ott and Mrs. Wiens. Mrs. Mussari reminded us of our up-
coming events including the FUN IN THE SUN dance-a-thon and Creative Minds. The BLUE team
was the colour house champion for February. In March, our focus will be on PERSEVERANCE.
