We are always looking for ways to make connections for our students between the learning they do at school and the world beyond the classroom. This term has seen many great opportunities for these links to be made and we thank everyone who has contributed to the learning of our students. During the school holidays the ANZAC Day Dawn Service will be held at the school and is a partnership between the Channel RSL Sub Branch, Rotary Club of D’Entrecasteaux Channel and Woodbridge School. Students and teachers have been working hard to prepare displays of work for the gym and these can be viewed during the breakfast which follows the Service. Everyone is welcome to attend from 6am. The cost of the hot breakfast is just $5 for adults and children under 15 are free. All proceeds go to the RSL and after the breakfast everyone is welcome to get together at Peppermint Bay. Grade 9 Sleep Over Last week on Thursday the Year 9 students had a sleep over at school! They enjoyed working together to complete team challenges and individual challenges. Ava and Sarah were a bit sore after the stork stand that lasted 33 minutes! Well done ladies☺ On Friday the students continued the fun with a BBQ at Silverwater Park, a hike and sports activities on the Woodbridge Oval. Thanks to Mr. Dean, Ms. Bremner, Mr. Crawford and Mrs. Robinson for organising this event.

Calling all family members who speak two or more languages at home!

2019 is the INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES! To celebrate this, we are working on songs from around the world in Music classes and in choir. We hope to present some of these during our Term 3 Arts Evening. If you know a song (or two!) in a language other than English, and if you’d like to share it, we would love to hear from you!

If you’re happy to come to school and to teach your song to Mrs van Emmerik and one of the primary classes (or the primary choir), please contact Andrea van Emmerik, Music Teacher, at [email protected] OR phone the school office on ph 62674667 any time throughout Term 2. Looking forward to hearing from you! Andrea van Emmerik (nee Scott)

MUSIC NEWS UPDATE – TERM 1, 2019

Hello! For those I haven’t yet met, my name is Andrea van Emmerik, and I’m your school’s new music teacher for 2019. I have a Bachelor of Music, a Bachelor of Teaching with Honours, and 17 years’ experience teaching Music. I just wanted to update you on our progress as a Music Department for this term, and keep you in the loop. So far, we have been busy learning …

• In Kindergarten: learning to move and ‘look like the music,’ sing using ‘sol’ and ‘mi,’ make a beautiful circle for songs such as ‘Two in the Middle,’ ‘Cut the Cake,’ and ‘Heads and Shoulders Baby.’ We have also read a book called ‘There Was an Old Lady,’ and can sing along with some of the story.

• In Prep and Grade One: learning to keep a steady beat, to use our ‘internal singing voice’ along with the actions of some songs, including ‘In a Cabin, In a Wood,’ and ‘Ram, Sam, Sam.’ The internalisation of lyrics is a brilliant and fun way to strengthen language, pitch and beat keeping. Ask your children to sing these songs to you! We have also used hand held percussion with some songs, to help show a strong beat. Miss Mulder’s Prep/One class have also been busy singing with their buddy class – Ms Bopp’s 3/4s – getting ready to perform in our ANZAC assembly this Thursday at 11:45am. Our song is called ‘The Last ANZAC.’ It’s about the people who served in Gallipoli, such as the last ANZAC to pass away - Tasmanian, Alec Campbell (http://www.centenaryofanzac.tas.gov.au/history/shared_stories/alec_campbell), and what it was like for them to be in battle.

• The Grade 2/3 Class has been learning to sing many different songs, including one we’d like to perform soon, called ‘Candy Man.’ This is a fun ‘echo’ song, which helps children forget their inhibitions, and explore their pitch range by using funny voices, imitation, and movement. It is also a nonsense song, which adds to the fun! We are also working on keeping a steady beat.

• The Grade 3/4 class learnt a song by Australian Marimba man, Jon Madin, called ‘I Wanna C, C, C,’ which we put it together with the piano and our marimbas and xylophones, and performed in Week 4 at a Primary Assembly. We performed in assembly again only a couple of weeks later, singing ‘Everyone Belongs,’ for Harmony Day (thanks to Ms Bopp’s enthusiasm for singing! The lyrics are so good - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ1QEE_RXP8). Now we are busy practising another song to perform in our ANZAC Assembly this Thursday. We love singing and performing!

• The Grade 4/5 class have been working on a song called ‘Obwisana.’ First, we learnt how to sing the song and play a ‘stone passing’ game, which looks a lot like this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM_U43bqvJA . We have also been singing about commemorating ANZAC Day, and all it symbolises. We are working on keeping a steady beat, and singing whilst playing tuned percussion instruments.

• The Grade 5/6 class have been working on a more advanced version of ‘Obwisana.’ We also learnt the ‘stone passing’ game as described above, and we understand that the song comes from Ghana in West Africa. The words translate loosely as ‘Oh Mamma, I hurt my hand on a rock!’ We have added drums to our piece, along with our singing. We are working on playing bass, harmony and melody parts all at once, and will hopefully perform this piece next term.

• In Grade 7 (White), we have been working on our chosen instruments in small groups to extend our skills. Some of us are complete beginners, and some are building on existing skills. All students will sit a small test this week to be sure that they can all play their ‘first five’ – notes, basic chords, or drumming patterns. They also need to be able to name the notes of the treble clef. After this, the aim is for students to work together as a whole class band in Term Two. We have students making great progress on flute, trumpet, clarinet, keyboard, guitar, drums, bass guitar, and more! It’s very exciting! Ned, Eli, and Mathilda, plus Harry from 7 Blue, are working toward an exciting project together … watch this space! Huge thanks also to Ned and Eli for their terrific performance in the recent secondary assembly!

• In Grade 8 (White), we have also been working on instrumental skills (in tandem with our growing understanding of music theory). There are particularly hard working students making terrific progress on the alto saxophone, clarinet (gold stars here!), trombone, drums, and many more instruments.

• In the Grade 9/10 Music Class, we are making amazing progress in our understanding. So far we have learnt about note names in treble clef, written and performed our own 4-beat rhythms, written and performed our own 1-minute composition using binary or ternary form, practised improvising in the context of the 12-bar blues, learnt about the primary chords (I, IV, & V) being a little like the primary colours in art, performed the 12-bar blues in the recent secondary assembly (and survived technical difficulties!). Kudos to Hugh whose improvisations are always terrific to listen to. We have also recently rehearsed a new piece together – Eagle Rock – with the bonus of 3 eagles being spotted flying beside the school at the same time! What are the chances? I think it’s a sign that we are doing well!

• PRIMARY CHOIR – Our Primary School Choir has begun rehearsing. We get together on Thursdays at lunch time! The first songs we learnt included ‘Black Socks,’ The Australian National Anthem, and ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ from Mary Poppins. Our first public appearance will be at the ANZAC Assembly this week. We have lots of exciting plans for this special group! The choir is open to all students from Grades 2 to 6. New members will always be welcome, and we expect that people will commit to coming to each rehearsal.

• MUSIC TEACHER ASSISTANTS – We are lucky enough to have the wonderful Malcolm Martin return to support the Music program for Years 7 – 10 at Woodbridge this year. We are ALSO lucky enough to have the fabulous Pete Thomas supporting the Year 8 class. Thanks for all your hard work so far this year, gents!

• More exciting events and groups are planned … but we will be focussing on the groups we have in place so far for now.

• ARTS EVENING – Save the date for our upcoming Arts Evening – Thursday 26th September.

• ASSEMBLIES – Friends, family, and carers are welcome to come and be a part of the audience for our regular assemblies – usually 11:45 on Thursdays as advertised in Woodbridge Words.

• ANY QUERIES, or even if you’d just like to establish contact, please email me, Andrea van Emmerik, at [email protected]

Grade 9 Science excursion to Tinderbox Beach We started our day by going on the R.V. Penghana for about an hour to Tinderbox beach. It was a really sunny and warm day, and we got to see seals along the way, which was really fun. Chloe, the MDC teacher, taught us about how to measure the slope of beaches for when we got there. When we did reach Tinderbox beach, we parked the boat, got into groups and then took it in turns to send people to the shore in the dinghy. Each group did a foreshore study that included measuring the slope of the rocky foreshore, doing a transect survey and recording the plants and animals on the foreshore. We also recorded numerous variables such as the air temperature, the wind and the amount of cloud in the sky. Then, once we had finished that activity, those who were going snorkelling went back to the boat and got ready. The rest of us went over to the beach, and played some cricket. The other group really enjoyed the snorkelling, and got to see fish, as well as a sting ray! After a couple hours, we headed back to the boat, and went back to school. By Leila Middleton (9 White)

Happy Birthday Mrs. Randall!!!!!
