A Modern City with a Thousand-Year History

A city that is as modern as it is traditional – Braunschweig has plenty to offer visitors with its historical sights, authen-tic quarters, contemporary architecture and lively cultural scene. Boasting some 250,000 inhabitants, Braunschweig (also known as Brunswick) is the largest town between Hannover and Berlin and a popular destination among tourists on cultural visits and city breaks. As the residence of the Guelph duke Henry the Lion and later on an imperial city under Otto IV, Braunschweig was formerly one of Germany‘s most important trading centres in the heart of Europe during the Middle Ages.

The striking buildings and squares steeped in history, which still characterise the town today, are a reminder of its chequered past, which goes back over a thousand years. The spirit of the Guelphs lives on in the city of Henry the Lion. It is not just home to museums of art and history but also a centre for cutting-edge research and innovative businesses. And Braunschweig is the region‘s key destination when it comes to shopping. In the attractive town centre everything is close to hand: a wide variety of shops with an inviting selection of restaurants, bars and cafés, all conjuring up the flair of the big city. The centre is encircled by the river Oker and delightful parkland, tempting visitors to while their time away there.

The town of the Pied Piper Hameln (or Hamelin as it is known in English) is a little gem in the hilly region of the Weserbergland. It can be found some 45 km southwest of Hannover, the capital of Niedersachsen, and is home to the curious legend of the Pied Piper. This town of 60,000 inhabitants will impress right from the start thanks to its fascinating architecture, mysterious history and delightful landscape.

Just strolling through the town centre is an attraction in itself. An even better idea is to sit down at one of the open-air cafés and admire the unique buildings over a cup of coffee. Lovers of architecture describe the old town of Hameln as a treasure of the Weser Renaissance style, with the stone edifices testifying above all to the history of the Pied Piper‘s town. One example is the Rattenfängerhaus dating from 1602 and bearing an inscription about the procession of the children from the town – the best-known historical event that took place in Hameln. 130 youngsters were said to have inexplicably disappeared from the town in 1284. This gave rise to the legend of the fantastical Pied Piper, who, it is claimed, spirited the children away out of revenge. Wherever you go in Hameln – and not just in its unmissable muse-um – you will come across this unusual figure: the story of the Pied Piper is omnipresent even today.

Pied Piper open-air performance80 citizens from Hameln act out the old legend every Sunday at noon from mid-May to mid-September. Lasting about half an hour. Admission free.

“RATS“ Pied Piper musicalHumorous interpretation of the story with a medley of catchy tunes from waltzes through marches and ballads to rap. Every Wednesday at 4.30 pm from the end of May to the middle of September. Lasting 45 minutes. Admission free.

Museum HamelnAt the mechanical Pied Piper theatre visitors can learn about the story and experience dra-matic scenes from the mediaeval legend first-hand.

Glass-blowing at HamelnVisitors to the historical Pulverturm can watch the glass blowers as they apply this traditio-nal technique and even try their hand at it themselves.

Trip down the riverTourists should not miss the opportunity of a trip down the river Weser. The promenade offers delightful walks by the water‘s edge. This is also the starting point for cycle trips along the Weser-Radweg and the landing stage for outings by boat.

RattenfängerhausThe Pied Piper‘s house was built in the style of Weser Renaissance between 1602 and 1603. It owes its name to the inscription it displays about the procession of the children from the town.

Christmas marketHameln‘s Christmas market, which runs from the end of November to 23 December, is one of the finest in northern Germany, with its festive wooden stands thronging round the

Hochzeitshaus and market church.

Adventure toursA guided tour of the town with the Pied Piper himself is bound to be an unforgettable experience. Visitors bra-ve enough to see the dark side of this character will discover completely new mysterious versions of how the children came to leave the town.

View from KlütClimb the Klüt, the city‘s nearest hill, for a fascinating view of the Pied Piper‘s town.

Old Town Hall Lüneburg‘s town hall is one of the most significant mediaeval city halls in northern Ger-many. The magnificent mediaeval and renaissance rooms provide a life-like impression of Lüneburg‘s history.

German Salt MuseumInteresting exhibitions in the former salt works, which remained in operation for over 1000 years, describe the importance of salt to Lüneburg and the world in general.

Kloster LüneThe Benedictine nunnery Kloster Lüne, located in Lüneburg‘s north, was founded in 1172. With its courtyard, fountain hall, church and the adjoining textile museum, the precious architectural ensemble is well worth a visit.

Wasserturm The water tower is a striking example of early industrial architecture. It was built in 1906/07 on what was left of the mediaeval walls of the city. A viewing platform offers a unique view of Lüneburg from a height of 56 metres.

Three Gothic churches in the city centre The churches of St. Nicolai, St. Johannis and St. Michaelis are impressive examples of the architectural style of redbrick Gothic, which characterises the historical face of the town.

Old town – subsidence zone When walking through the old town to the west, the consequences of salt working become apparent. This has left its mark in the form of subsidence, obvious from the sunken streets and crooked buildings dating from the 16th and 17th century.

Ostpreußisches LandesmuseumThe Ostpreußisches Landesmuseum focuses on the rich history and culture of East Prussia. Exhibits on its art, regional history, economy and nature tell stories of the life and the past of a former German province.

Sülfmeistertage Every year a large mediaeval spectacle revolving around salt takes place in Lüneburg at the beginning of October. This festival pays tribute to the so-called master salters or Sülfmeister, who were key figures here in the Middle Ages and thus instrumental in endowing the town with its riches and standing.

Lüneburg Christmas marketAs soon as Christmas comes round, the Hanseatic salt-trading town of Lüneburg decks itself out in festive garb. The gables of its historical buildings are bathed in the glow of Christmas lights, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the town.

Modern urban life in a historical setting

Wherever they go in the town centre, visitors cannot escape Lüneburg‘s history, which goes back over 1050 years. For over 1,000 years, salt was boiled at the Lüneburg salt works. In the Middle Ages Lüneburg owed its wealth and stan-ding to its trade in what in those days was known as “white gold“. With its northern German redbrick architecture and magnificent gabled houses, the typically Hanseatic face of the town and historical ambience bear witness to its former riches and busy trading within the Hanseatic League.

Trade in salt within the Hanseatic League has now given way to modern urban life in the mediaeval streets of this town. The traffic-calmed city centre invites shoppers to linger in its well-stocked retail outlets, cafés and bistros or to wander down the bustling pedestrian precinct. After Madrid, Lüneburg has the highest density of bars and restaurants in Europe – ranging from rustic taverns to exclusive restaurants, whatever you might fancy. Besides taking a stroll along Schröderstraße, tourists can also turn their steps to the picturesque canal district of the Wasserviertel next to the former port. There they will find the Old Crane and historical buildings overlooking the river Ilmenau at Stintmarkt – with this area almost developing Mediterranean flair on warm summer evenings.
