It is that time of year again when you start to see stuff in front yards that is not seen any other time of the year. The stuff I am referring to is

yard signs and banners. To the proud parents who have a child playing on a sports team, usually football, they

will display a yard sign with their child’s name and jersey number in the front yard. Most of these signs are for high school and middle school children. Then there are the college fans and it does not matter if they have a child at the school or not. It does not matter if they even went to the school. Just the other day I rode by a house displaying an Ohio State Buckeyes banner from the front porch. Then yesterday, I saw a truck wrapped all up in Alabama paraphernalia.

Most of you know my family cheers for Georgia, just like we know most of you cheer for Kentucky, Louisville or Murray State. Even if you do not cheer for any team or player, I hope you can cheer for the Lord. But when was the last time you saw a Christian banner or flag displayed in someone's yard declaring that household is for the Lord? In Psalm 20, David wrote, “We will rejoice in your salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners!” He would go on to write, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.” (V. 5,7) David was quick to let others know for whom he stood.

As always there is much going on in the life of Hillcrest Baptist Church. However, I want to challenge you this month to figure out a unique way to let the banner of Christ fly high. Be creative. You may purchase a Christian flag and put it on display in your yard. You may put something in the window of your car or place something online. Whatever you do, take October and use it to let others know you are more than just a fan of the Lord Jesus Christ. Let them know you belong to Him and you will not be ashamed to share it. One thing is for certain. When you are on the Lord’s team, you will always be cheering for the best!

Matthew 5:14-16 states that “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts in under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

GUATEMALA MISSION TRIP January 13, 2014, 29 people will be leaving the Nashville Airport and will landing in Guatemala City, Guatemala. We will ministering there until January 20, 2014 when we plan to return. We would ask for your prayer support and your financial support as we make plans for this trip. We will be ministering to children and adults and sharing with them the love of Jesus. In the past 2 years Hillcrest has furnished the funds to build a well in the village of Los Palmares, Guatemala and have built a church in the same village. This year we will be building classrooms and rest rooms onto the church and dedicating the new addition for the glory of the Lord. We will be conducting VBS, working in the Hospital with 3 of our nurses, doing the construction of the new building and conducting door to door evangelism. Please pray for these 29 people that are planning on going on the trip.

WALK THRU BETHLEHEM On Saturdays, October 5th & 26th, 7:00 am – Noon we will be working on the construction of our buildings for Walk thru Bethlehem. We really need the help of some men to assist in some construction and setting up our buildings. Darwin Marshall will be leading the construction crews but it is mandatory that we have some help as the majority of last year’s crew is not available to work. You will be assisting in a valuable ministry outreach tool.

God bless,

Through the summer this year we, in the student ministry, spent a lot of time explaining the grand importance of testing and knowing Jesus firsthand. It is easy for us to be simply accepting of preachers, teachers, or traditions

that are absent or oppose the Truth. All things should be tested. Many times we can test things we never imaged we could/should test. For example, have you ever wondered why we have the time in our service that we adoringly call "grip and grin?" Is that biblical? If it isn't should we do it? Fact is that it is biblical. In the early church this is called the passing of peace. Not really a time to just smile and shake a hand, but to love or spread needed peace to brothers and sisters in the faith. By the way... this isn't true because I have stated it here! It’s true because it’s founded in scripture and recorded church history. Test this for yourself!

What about revival? We just came through one last month. Psalm 85:6 is a cry for revival from God's people. They have come through exile and find themselves in need of reviving. Revival is a church term. What I mean is that literally it is for the believer, the bride of Christ, the church. It doesn't have to be an extra service, but a desperation to be revived in Christ for the purpose of redemption's plan. Revival results in salvation because the believer is revived in their passion to share the good news of Jesus with the lost. May this spur you on to test all things (1 Thes. 5:21), be revived even now, and go make much of Jesus!

It’s been a project five years in the making... sort of. Debbie has been asking me to build a cornhole set for a while. As you can see, it is finished! To be fair, I procrastinated for a wide

variety of reasons. Even upon finishing the woodworking portion of the project, the boards laid against the back wall of the garage. After several coats of paint and polycrylic, they were ready to be used.

As some of you can attest, Deb’s facebook posts tell the story. We played, I won (that’ll change), and we enjoyed the friendly competition. Unfortunately, Stephen and Becca did not get to enjoy those first games with us. I am reminded of two principles from Scripture. First, my work is imperfect. The Bible reminds us that our best efforts are comparable to filthy rags (that’s the nice version) Look at what Isaiah writes: 6 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away. Isaiah 64:6 (NIV)

I know how much I labored to remove the imperfections that would affect the game, but I never reached perfection. Apart from Christ, we cannot attain a righteousness acceptable to God. We need Jesus!

The second principle relates to timing. If we surveyed our church family, there would be a long list of things we wished we had done sooner rather than later. Why? Because we forfeited the perceived benefits. Why do people put off making decisions for Christ or to a commitment in line with God’s will. There was no fear related to finishing the cornhole set, but fear can be a part of the equation when we discuss the call of God. Moses’ story in Exodus is riddled with the “what if’s” of ministry. Yet, God called him, equipped him, and used him to lead a people toward the land of promise. What is the next step for YOU?

Here are some post-it questions for the mirror: How will we step out in faith, pursue His call, and rely on His grace through the process? See YOU Sunday!
