3. Who was the first woman?

a. What did her name mean?

b. How was she created?

Eve was the first woman

a. The traditional meaning of Eve is Living or Life.

And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.

Genesis 3:20

b. God formed Eve from a rib out of Adam.

And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept: and He took one of his ribs,

and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He

made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said:” This is now bone of my

bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”

Genesis 2:21-23

4. Identify two women in the Bible who were prophetesses. Read, listen, or watch

the story of one.

Miriam—Miriam was called a prophetess not only because she received

revelations from God (numbers 12:1-2; Micah 6:4) but also for her musical skill.

Prophecy and music were often closely related in the Bible (1 Samuel 10:5; 1

Chronicles 25:1). Miriam’s timbrel was an instrument shaped like a circle and

ringed with brass pieces. It was similar to the tambourine.

Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand; and all the women went

out after her with timbrels and with dances. And Miriam answered them; “Sing to the Lord, For He has

triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!” (Ex. 15:20-21)

Deborah— The people of Israel weren't so well. In fact, they had forgotten

about God and started doing everything wrong. So God allowed Jabin, a king of

Canaan, to attack Israel and defeat the people, making them slaves for the

Canaanites.

King Jabin had a huge army with nine hundred iron chariots that was led by a

cruel man named Sisera. He was so mean to the people of Israel that they remembered the Lord

(finally!), and they called out to Him for help.

That was the first smart thing the Israelites had done in a long time. The other smart move was

listening to Deborah, a female judge who loved and followed the God. Day after day, Deborah would sit

under a special palm tree that they actually named after her—the Palm Tree of Deborah—and she

would listen to the Israelites’ problems and make decisions about what to do. Everyone respected her

opinion.

One day God told her to send a message to a man named Barak. She told him, “The Lord, the God of

Israel, commands you: ‘Go and gather ten thousand men. Lead them to Mount Tabor where I will make

Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, come to you. I will help you to defeat Sisera there.’”

Can you imagine? God had just given Barak the green light to defeat the awful people who had been

treating his people so badly, and God promised to help him do it! Awesome. Barak must have felt

powerful, right?

Nope. He was scared. So scared that he told Deborah, “I will only go if you will go with me.” Unlike

Barak, Deborah was brave and trusted God. She agreed to go, but she told Barak that he wouldn't get

credit for the victory. Even though Barak had dragged his feet, God still fought for Israel and sent

Sisera’s huge army into mass confusion. In the end, Barak and Deborah won an incredible victory

anyway, and Israel was saved.

Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time. And she would sit

under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the mountains of Ephraim. And the

children of Israel came up to her for judgement. Judges 4:4-5)

Huldah— Judah was a total mess. Somehow along the way they had lost the

Book of the Law that told them about God. The people had stopped following the

Lord and were worshipping idols all over the place. But in walked Josiah, Judah’s eight-

year-old new king.

Many years later, Josiah ordered the people to repair God’s temple. While they were

cleaning, guess what they found? Yep-the Book of the Law! I bet they had to dust it off

because they hadn't read it in forever. When they did, Josiah realized just how disobedient the people

had been. What should we do? He wondered. He went to his high priest and scribes for help

Hilkiah, the high priest, had heard about Huldah, a prophetess who always told the truth from God.

Now Huldah must have been very respected to be known by such important people.

Hilkiah went to her and asked, “What’s going to happen to our nation because we have sinned so

much?”

Huldah answered bravely and honestly. “Its not good news for the people of Judah,” she warned. “God

is angry with them for forgetting Him and worshipping false gods, and He plans to punish the harshly

because of it.”

I'm just guessing, but it probably wasn't easy for Huldah to deliver such awful news. But because she

knew God’s truth and was brave enough to tell it, King Josiah was able to make the changes and the

Bible says he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord.

There are some interesting facts about Huldah found in the link below.

So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of

Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, the keeper of the wardrobe. (2 Kings 22:14)

Anna— At first, Anna was probably like all the other young, married

Hebrew girls her age. But something really sad happened. After being

married only seven years, Anna’s husband died. What was she going to do

now?

Anna decided to dedicate her life to God and went to live in the temple where she served Him as a

prophetess. For the next several decades, Anna worshipped there by fasting and praying to God and

waiting for the Savior He had promised.

I don’t know about you, but I think it would be hard to pray for an entire afternoon, let alone an entire

lifetime. But Anna didn't stop because her focus was on God, and she knew He had made a promise and

would keep it. Well, just imagine the day when Mary and Joseph took baby Jesus to the temple to

dedicate Him to God. Wrinkled and grey, eighty-four-year-old Anna was probably going about her

typical day of praying and worshipping when she looked over to see the newborn Savior! God had

allowed her to see His promise really happen! Filled with thanks, she told everyone around her about

Jesus, the Hope of the world.

Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe Asher. She was of great

age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; and this woman was a widow of about

eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night

and day. And coming in that instance she gave thanks to the Lord and spoke of Him to all those who

looked for redemption in Jerusalem. (Luke 2:36-38)
