beyond oFF-duTy SurvIvaL: brInGInG your FamILy InTo your WorLd

Monday, November 14, 3:30 pm to 5:00 pmRegency Ballroom 1This workshop was originally developed for the United States Border Patrol and is now available to all law enforcement organizations. Most law enforcement training focuses on getting you home in one piece at the end of each shift, and yet ten percent of police officer murders occur off-duty. This class teaches of-ficers what off-duty threats they may face and how to respond safely and tactically, and then goes even further, helping them to teach their families how to stay safe and respond appropriately when the unthink-able happens. We also discuss family firearms safety, officer ambush, levels of risk, and how to bring your family into “your world” in a safe and healthy manner.

Constantly updated with new information and real-life examples, this course helps fill in the gaps between your work world and your personal life. Sgt. Smith brings her unique experiences as a cop, a spouse, a parent, a step-parent, and an internationally recog-nized law enforcement trainer and author to this un-precedented look into the real life of cops and their friends and families. This course will provide attend-ees with resources, networking opportunities, and a chance to share their experiences with others.

Speaker: Betsy Brantner-Smith, Retired Sergeant/Lecturer

Tuesday, November 15, 10:30 am to 12 NoonRegency Ballroom 2The chances of a law enforcement professional being involved in a major critical incident such as a shooting during his or her career are relatively slim; however, countless other police officers and professional staff members experience trauma through their peripheral role in such incidents. Oftentimes, these individuals are overlooked when it comes time to offer organi-zational support. This workshop will be a facilitated panel discussion in which presenters share stories of managing a wild shootout with a heavily armed man intent on doing harm to others, assisting a critically wounded officer following a gun battle, and handling the frantic 911 calls during the catastrophic PG&E ex-plosion and fire in San Bruno.

Gordon GraHam

Gordon Graham is a 33 year veteran of California law enforcement. During his tenure as a police pro-fessional, he was award-ed his teaching credential from California State Uni-versity, Long Beach. He later graduated from Uni-versity of Southern Cali-

fornia with a Master’s Degree in Safety and Systems Management and from Western State University with a Juris Doctorate. His education as a risk manager and experience as a practicing attorney, coupled with his extensive background in law enforcement, have al-lowed him to rapidly become recognized internationally as a dynamic presenter with multiple areas of expertise.

Mr. Graham has centered his efforts in providing knowledge to other law enforcement officers in the area of civil liability, professionalism, ethical decision making and related topics. Instead of focusing solely in after incident damage control, he focuses his efforts in the prevention of mistakes through his program SROVT (Solid Realistic Ongoing Verifiable Training). He teaches police officers why things generally go wrong, and how to prevent these unfortunate situations from happening. He follows up his prevention efforts with a dynamic presentation on how to recognize the inci-dents that have a likelihood of ending up in litigation. He concludes his program with a detailed examina-tion on how to prove proper conduct. Additionally, Mr. Graham has developed the CATSINRO approach to the elimination of sexual harassment in the workplace. Each of his presentations includes the appropriate written “rules” for the topic covered. These risk man-agement rules allow the informed listener to make im-mediate, progressive changes in operations to better protect themselves and their organization. Over the last decade, Mr. Graham has spoken to over 300,000 law enforcement and other public safety professionals from every state in the country, no doubt some from

your department.

Since 1990, he consistently received the highest evaluations on California POST critiques. In 1995, Mr. Graham received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement Training, the highest tribute avail-able in the critical mission of training police profes-sionals. His penetrating wit coupled with his vast knowledge in multiple disciplines provides the enlight-ened listener, regardless of rank, with an information packed seminar that will benefit him/her in current and future assignments.
