    suddenly your love, cuddles andattention is going elsewhere? They willhave already sensed changes duringyour pregnancy, but nothing canprepare them except you. Here are afew hints and tips:* Throughout the pregnancy, take thetime to train your dog to stop jumpingup, go to his bed on command andany other bad habits.* Establish boundaries with thenursery being off-limits. Conditioningyour dog to understand that there is aninvisible barrier that he may not crosswithout your permission can be donewith a combination of clicker trainingand rewarding with their favouritetreats.* Set clear boundaries when your babyis born using an item of their clothingor a muslin cloth and train them to snifffrom a distance while you are holdingthe item. Once you have this undercontrol, they should understand to waitfor your command to allow him toapproach your baby.* When your baby comes home, ask aprofessional pet carer, friend or familyto take them out for a walk so theirenergy levels are low. Beforereturning, wait at the doorstep andmake sure to keep your dog calm.

    * You can allow your dog to sniff thebaby, but from a respectful distance.Don t bring the baby too close.Eventually, the dog can be allowed toget closer. By doing this you reteaching them that baby is precious toyou and you re controlling theirinteraction.* Supervise the dog and baby sinteraction. Teach your child not tobother the dog so it is learned quicklyto leave a peaceful dog alone andensure they re never left alone.

    * Keep up the dogs normal routinesuch as walks and feeding, again, lookfor a pet carer, friend or familymember as this will help your dog feelsecure and allow him to relax aboutthe new addition to the family.

    to Know ((Pic Sandra Beale logo))Pregnant employees or those onmaternity leave have many key rightsin accordance with employmentlaw. This includes:

    Up to 52 weeks maternity leaveregardless of length of service (26weeks ordinary maternity leave +additional maternity leave)

    Statutory maternity pay (ormaternity allowance if length of serviceis not sufficient)

    Receipt of full benefits duringmaternity leave

    Paid time off for ante natal classes Not to be dismissed for pregnancy

    or maternity-related reasons, to beoffered suitable alternative role inredundancy situations in preference toother employees

    Protection from discrimination The right to return to the same job

    after a period of ordinary maternityleave on the same terms andconditions.

    The latter may be more difficultreturning after additional maternityleave but any alternative role shouldbe a reasonable equivalent on the

    same terms and with the same status.

    Ideally when a female employeeannounces they are pregnant, a riskassessment should be doneparticularly if their work could placethem and their unborn child at risk egcarrying heavy loads, working indangerous conditions.

    Pregnant employees are required togive their MAT B1 to their employerswhich they receive at 26 weekspregnancy. This indicates the possibleexpected date of delivery allowing bothparties to plan ahead. The employeecan go off on maternity leave at anytime from the 11th week before theexpected week of confinement. Theycould even work right up to date ofdelivery although that is notadvisable. Maternity leave can start onany day of the week.

    Whilst on maternity leave they accrueholidays, which can be taken aftertheir maternity pay period ends andbefore they return to work.

    Employers need to be seen to betreating employees who are pregnant

    or on maternity leave fairly. If they failto do so then the penalty could behuge employment tribunalcompensation.

    opportunity to get up to date and paythe tax they owe by 28th February.After that, HMRC will target them andtake a much closer look at their taxaffairs.
