Centro have procured a new fleet of trams. They are 20% larger and more passenger friendly.

To accommodate these larger trams the tram depot at Wednesbury has been extended.

The first tram was unveiled 16th October and the new depot opened The new fleet will enter service from April 2014

There are also plans to extend

the Metro further from New Street to

Centenary Square this is planned to be

completed in 2018. There are further plans to extend the Metro to the East Side of Birmingham to connect with HS2.

Project Background - Birmingham City Centre Extension. Work is already taking place on the first phase of the extension which will link Snow Hill and New Street stations in Birmingham with services commencing in 2015.

One way loop along Market Street and Lichfield Street with a spur to the Rail Station.

Due to high costs and disruption to local businesses this was not progressed.

Since then a simplified more direct route has been developed. This places twin tracks along Pipers Row The tram will then turn right onto Railway Drive There will be a terminating stop at the Rail Station. The stop at St Georges will be retained for some off peak services.

The Wolverhampton Interchange is a mixed public and private sector development based in Wolverhampton

This will encourage much needed private investment in the area The development includes:

• A new state of the art rail station• Leisure offering - 57,000 square feet and a 100 room hotel• Grade A offices - 297,000 square feet• Expansion of the multi-storey car park to 1000 new spaces

This represents over £100m worth of investment and is forecasted to bring 1400 jobs

The first phase of this should commence on site in 2014

Utilities will have to be diverted on Pipers Row. • BT • Gas • Sewers

Main works including: • Formation including Concrete Slabs• Track Installation • OLE including Poles and Wires • Platforms• Highways alterations and reinstatement

Traffic Management - to limit disruption to traffic during construction, Centro are proposing to construct one track at a time and will put in place a one way traffic flow. Bus service access and emergency vehicles would therefore be retained on Pipers Row.
