Learning to Draw and its Importance!

Yes, there is an Artistic Journey through learning all Art. In the basic visual art you must first learn to Draw! Many painters say, “I can’t draw, but I can paint!”. But they are really saying that they are still trying to draw, but with a brush. Learning to draw properly is the first initial step in the visual arts and will lead further into any of the painting mediums, if preferred. Some like to stay at the drawing level, and have made extraordinary accomplishments! There are valuable lessons and rules to learn. Joseph will teach you the many and take you through each and every step that you will need to progress in the medium, from simple pencil drawing through expressive realism. He will present all of the different stylus forms, grounds, and additional materials you will need to make a work of art. Please bring a Pen & Notebook to the first class!

Dates: 4/24 - 5/29 Time: 6:30-8:00pm Cost: $79 Location: WMHS D126

Instructor: Joe Leto Doing Abstract Art Properly!

By its name alone Abstract presents a disillusion of the real. However, the Masters over the centuries have claimed how important it is for any conceptual ideas that you may have. For instance, any idea starts as an abstract, in your mind! Then it grows into what concept that you have for it. Through its though, technique, style, and form, you first peruse, then establish. All of professional art works that way, no matter what medium. The Boston Tradition of Classical Realism promotes the emergence of abstract and how it is important to setting it all up to your final perceived tone of artistic conclusiveness! Joseph will show you the rules, the basics, the theory, the reasoning, and the different thoughts of abstract. You will be surprised how this class alone will help you improve your overall thinking, style, and presentation on all of your works, whether realistic or not. Abstract has not only been taught, but used by many of the great masters! Please bring a Pen & Notebook to the first class! Dates: 4/26 - 5/31 Time: 6:30-8:00pm Cost: $79 Location: WMHS D126 Instructor: Joe Leto

A Taste of Bowl Turning

In this fast-paced class, we explore fundamental gouge and scraper cutting techniques for cross-grain woodturning. Using these techniques, turners cut wood efficiently and leave a smooth accurate surface on their work. We learn how to use the bevel gracefully to guide the knife edge along a smooth curve and why this technique allows such smooth tool control. Any surface imperfections are smoothed with a scraper and develop an eye for making the shape desired. We will mount a round section of a plank on a faceplate and turn the outside profile of the bowl and provide a spigot or recess on the bottom. Using a scroll chuck, we remount the blank on the spigot or in the recess and turn the rim and inside of the bowl. Lastly, we grip the bowl by the rim in a jam chuck and finish the foot. This fundamental technique can be used to turn bowls of many sizes and shapes. In such a short class, we focus on learning technique rather than production; it's a perfect way to get a taste of bowl turning to see if you really like it. Dates: 6/2 Time: 10:00am-4:00pm Cost: $115 Location: Woodcraft Woburn Instructor: Rick Angus 185 New Boston St.

Build a Live Edge Bench or Coffee Table

Live edge furniture, also known as natural edge furniture, is furniture that celebrates wood in its most dramatic, organic and irregular form — by showing off bark, spalted areas and cracks. Creating a live edge piece involves letting the natural properties of the slab take the lead. This is an exciting experience, as the tree, in essence, becomes your co-designer. In this 2-session or 3-session course, students will learn how to evaluate and select slabs from among a diverse array available for purchase at Woodcraft, and to design a piece of furniture, capitalizing on the woods’ natural beauty. Students will then be taught to surface the slabs and to inlay bow tie splines that stop naturally occurring cracks from getting larger and add aesthetic value to the project. Next, they will either build wooden legs, or attach steel hairpin legs also available for purchase from Woodcraft. Both power tools and hand tools will be used. Students who apply storebought legs will complete the project in two classes. Students who choose to construct and apply handmade wooden legs using time-tested methods of joinery should register for all 3 classes. Finally, advice on wood finishing products and techniques will be provided to all students. Dates: 6/7, 6/14 & 6/23 Time: Classes 6/7 & 6/14- 6:00pm-9:00pm, Class 6/23- 6:00pm-1:00am Cost: $155 for 2 Classes (6/7 & 6/14) $305 for 3 Classes (6/7, 6/14 & 6/23), Plus cost of Materials: Live edge slabs between

$75-$300, Hairpin Legs $18-$20 each (depending on length) Wood for Homemade Legs $40-$60 Location: Woodcraft Woburn, 185 New Boston St. Instructor: Brian Days
