Spring Symposium Schedule: 4:00 Registration and refreshments sponsored by Scholastic 4:30 Session 1 Lessons Learned by Students and Teachers: How a Science Writing Inquiry Moved Everyone's Thinking Forward (Eileen Lynch, Amber O’Reilly, Hollington Lee, Leslie Skantz Hodgson, Jack Czajkowski) Members of a national Science Teacher Research Group will share what they’ve learned from national research and local practice about what engages students in writing arguments in science and other content areas. They will discuss what has moved teachers' thinking forward and philosophical changes in the new Massachusetts STE Standards. Teaching Multiliteracies for Classroom Learning: Redesigning Resources (Maria José Botelho, Theresa Austin, Marie Christine Polizzi, Maria A. Geueke) In this interactive workshop, presenters collaborate with participants to explore multiliteracies pedagogies for English language learning. Workshop participants will explore mixed multilingual and multimodal literate practices and consider the importance of social interaction and collaborative text production for language and academic learning. 5:45 Dinner and discussion 6:30 Session 2 APPetizers for Supporting and Scaffolding all Learners (Stephanie Grimaldi) We will explore various technology applications (such as Google Tools, backchannels, and content creation tools) to support student and teacher thinking. Aspects of Universal Design for Learning and application selection considerations will be woven throughout. Please bring a laptop with you as this session will be interactive. Four Pillars for Equity: Engaging ELLs in Critical & Academic Literacy (Wilma Ortiz and Andrew Habana Hafner) We will introduce the framework of Four Pillars for engaging culturally and linguistically diverse learners. Participants will also explore problem-posing approaches to engage themselves and their ELLs on local and global issues that promote classroom dialogue and learning as a means for building critical and academic literacy in schools. 7:45 Dessert and closing keynote with Jamilla Jones Thursday, March 31, 2016 from 4:30-8:30 p.m. (4:00 p.m. registration) at Westfield State University (Horace Mann Building) Cost: $25 ($15 for full-time undergraduate students) Finding Your Voice So That Your Students Can Find Theirs: Creating Lifelong Engagement in Classrooms People often ask Jamilla why the same students who show such little engagement in other classes are so engaged in her classes. Participation, inquiry, and growth are not negotiable in her classes. She learns besides her students. She shares her expertise with them and, as they navigate the murky waters of education and the world, they learn to share their expertise with Jamilla and each other. (Jamilla Jones teaches tenth grade ELA and works with teachers in the areas of Social Justice at Duggan Middle School in Springfield.)
