5 IMPORTANT AFRICAN AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHERS THAT YOU SHOULD KNOWGordon ParksThe first African-American pho-tographer hired at Life and Voguemagazines, Gordon Parks was aprolific photographer,writer, com-poser and filmmaker. His photoessays that he produced prima-rily for LIFE magazine from the1940s to 1970s focused on is-sues related to poverty, race,segregation and life of AfricanAmericans .

Addison Scurlock came to Washington DC in 1900and opened up a Studio in 1911on U Street, in the heart of theAfrican American Community. Heestablished himself as the pre-eminent African American pho-tographer in Washington DC at atime when minstrel caricaturewas common. His photos cap-tured black culture in its complex-ity and showed black people asthey saw themselves.

Jamel ShabazzBorn and raised in Brooklyn,Jamel Shabezz has documentedurban New York for the last 40years. In 1980 he embarked ona mission to extensively docu-ment various aspects of life inNew York City, from youth cultureto a wide range of social condi-tions. Due to its spontaneity anduniqueness, the streets and sub-way system became backdropsfor many of his photographs.

Moneta Sleet JrBest known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of the funeralof the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr..Moneta Sleet Jr started workingfor Johnson Publishing in 1955,where he shot for the Ebony andJet Magazine, capturing, amongothers Muhammad Ali, StevieWonder and Billie Holiday. Healso shot the funeral of MalcolmX.

James Van Der Zeewas a Harlem-based photogra-pher, renowned for his glam-orous, detailed portraits anddepictions of the African Ameri-can middle class in Harlem in the1920s and 30s. He labeled eachof his photos with a signatureand date, which would prove tobe important for future documen-tation.
