Wixie Workshop Kit 2
Wixie Workshop Kit www.tech4learning.com/wixie 7/25/2014
This kit contains resources to help you plan and implement a successful first workshop (taking a couple of hours) for teachers who are getting Wixie for the first time.
The kit includes a sample presentation, a presentation outline, ideas for hands-on tasks, play prompts to encourage exploration, handouts for use by teachers during and after the workshop, and a certificate for workshop participants.
The materials in this kit cover basic Wixie operations as a student and teacher. For more advanced features such as standards and assessment, explore the Training tab within Wixie.

Preparing for the Workshop Below are a few tasks we recommend you complete prior to the workshop.
Provision Wixie Accounts Having teacher and student accounts and classes set up when the training starts lets you really show off the
power of the Wixie teacher tools. Provisioning all accounts prior to the workshop lets you share student
usernames and passwords with teachers who may be overwhelmed with managing students log ins.
If you can’t provision student accounts, it is still a great idea to get teacher accounts created. While you can
create temporary or workshop accounts, if new accounts are created in the future for these teachers (with new,
unique account IDs), the materials they create during the workshop will need to be exported from the workshop
account and imported into their regular account.
Populate Your Wixie Account with Activities and Samples Before the workshop, log in to your teacher account and create a sample project or two to give you time to
explore the Wixie student tool as well as develop a high-quality example of the type of work you expect to see
students create in Wixie. You will find a tutorial on the Training tab and may even want to make your own
samples from the play prompts in Appendix A.
Explore the templates in the Activities tab to find and customize one you can share. You
may also want to ask a student to create a few samples in their account so you can
demonstrate how to view, comment on, and evaluate student work.
If you have participated in a Wixie pilot, you may already have accounts populated with
samples. You can ask teachers and students to click the Send button and choose Export
File to export samples from their accounts and share with you.
Test Devices If you are using PCs in the training, log in to Wixie from one of the computers you will be using to test that the
browser has necessary plug-ins and resources are white-listed. If you will be using tablets, make sure the Wixie
app is installed.
Prepare Handouts Explore the sample handouts in Appendix B and choose the ones you want to print and/or share with teachers
during the workshop. If you have all accounts created, print the log in information for students in each
participating teacher’s class.
Explore Support Resources The teacher handouts in Appendix B include two pages of support resources for technical information as well as
curriculum integration. Explore the links and resources to see which ones you think will resonate most with your
teachers, so you can highlight these during the limited time of the workshop.

Presentation Ideas - Introducing Teachers to Wixie
Here are suggestions for things to say on each page of the Presentation - Getting Started with Wixie PDF.
If you are combining an overview presentation with hands-on work, commit about one-third of the time to
showing Wixie and two-thirds providing hands-on time for teachers to work with Wixie.
Title page - Introduction
Why we purchased Wixie and what it will help us accomplish, for example:
Wixie is an online tool students can use to construct knowledge and communicate ideas. o Explain how Wixie fits into your district goals for the integration of technology
Wixie helps students learn to articulate thoughts and ideas effectively using oral, written and nonverbal communication skills in a variety of forms and contexts.
o Explain how Wixie supports your vision for student learning, technology integration, parent connections.
Page 2 – Wixie supports student learning
What can students create with Wixie?
With Wixie, students can use paint tools, text options, clip art, and voice recording to create projects like
digital books, ePubs, and printed comics that showcase their content knowledge.
o Click examples to explore projects or simply talk about the types of things you expect to do.
o Explain how students can make digital books, stories, printed comics, and more.
Pages 3-5 – Wixie supports effective instruction
Wixie is more than just a student tool.
Teachers are connected to students and classes and can create and assign work, develop activities,
create rubrics, and evaluate projects for these classes. For example, with Wixie, our teachers can:
1. Create and assign activities designed to help them meet specific learning goals. 2. Manage student work and progress, as well as individualize and differentiate instruction. 3. Evaluate student projects.
Page 6 – Get Started – Transition to hands-on work with Wixie
While a quick overview can help you set the stage, teachers will get the most out of hands-on time. At this point,
distribute log in information to teachers and have them get started on their computers or tablets. Share how the
process of logging in will be similar for students.
The following section includes ideas for hands-on work with Wixie.

Training
The Wixie Training tab contains resources to help you get started using Wixie with your students and facilitate
integration once you are working.
The left-hand side includes resources for using both the student and teacher tools in Wixie.
The top Recipes section contains a step-by-step tutorial for the Wixie student tool to help you learn the basics of
text, paint, images, pages, and voice narration.

grey box to open a category. Click the title of the reference to open it or click the PDF icon to open a file you can
download or print.

The Articles section on the right includes resources and support materials for integrating Wixie into your
classroom curriculum, including grade-specific Common Core guides. There are also sample documents you can
use to connect with parents.
Wixie www.wixie.com Tech4Learning, Inc.
Here are some ideas for first Wixie projects that will help students get used to logging in, using the tools, and
sharing their work.
Getting Students Logged In
Print out the list of users for your class, including their usernames and passwords. Create a shortcut on student
computers to your site’s Wixie page. It should look something like this: http://sitename.wixie.com. In many browsers,
you can drag a shortcut from the URL address to your Desktop. You could also create a favorite in the browser.
Help students find and launch the shortcut to the site or the shortcut to your browser application and the
favorite you have saved. Have students enter their username and password into your Wixie home page and click
the Arrow button.
The Wixie student tool will launch and open to Projects view. Students can start from a blank project or open
general templates like graphic organizers. If you have assigned an activity, these will appear on the left.
Getting Started with All About Me
Creating a project where you already know the content makes it much easier to learn a new technology tool.
Before you begin, assign the All About Me template to your students.
The template consists of 6 pages. In completing the project, students will learn to move between pages, use the
paint tools, stickers, and type text into existing text boxes.
Wixie www.wixie.com Tech4Learning, Inc.
More Ideas for First Projects
My Goals for This Year
Once students have used a template, they are ready to begin creating on their own.
You can also assign a goals template from the Templates folder in Activities.
Have students create a one-page document that lists their goals for this school year.
Students can add text boxes to identify their goals and add stickers to decorate.
My First Week of School
You can rotate the Wixie canvas to a portrait orientation, making it easy to envision printed
documents.
After the first week of school, or the first week using Wixie, have students create a
newsletter from the class to share with their families.
Vacation Snapshot
Wixie includes some fun print and image export options including comics and PDFs.
Have students create four pages in Wixie relating a story or significant events in their
summer (or other) vacation. Choose Send, choose Print, and select Comics, or choose
Export Images and C to create one page that shows all of the panels. This supports
Marzano’s instructional strategies of non-linguistic representations and summarizing!
Sharing Student Work
It is easy to share student work in Wixie. Click the Send button on the toolbar to see
choices for sharing the project.
When students build a project, it is immediately assigned a URL location where it can be
viewed online. Choose “Copy Project URL” to copy the URL to your clipboard. You can
paste that URL in a browser, email the URL to the person you want to share the project
with, or link to the project URL from your classroom or school web site.
If your Wixie account is set up to require a pass key, users will have to enter this key
before they can view the project.
You can export Wixie projects as images, PDFs, Flash files, HTML, and ePub. You can also print Wixie projects as
booklets, comics, trading cards, and more.
