    CONCERT

    MATTEO FEDELI

  • THE VIOLINIST MATTEO FEDELIMatteo Fedelis artistic mission is taking the voice of the famous cremonese luthiers Amati, Stradivari and Guarneri to the largest possible audience. Ambassador of Italian Culture to the United States for the Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry, he goes on tour every year with concerts in several American States. Finally, his activity enjoys the endorsement of the Italian Senate of the Republic and of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Environmental Conservation. Thanks to the sensitivity to others shown by his coupling of charity work to great artistic events, and in acknowledgement of his career, Matteo was bestowed the Croce di Cavaliere dellOrdine di Malta, the Croce di Cavaliere di merito del Sacro Militare Ordine Costantiniano and two Paul Harris Fellowships. He executes over 100 concerts each year. He is currently collaborating with the strings-playing organization Solo dArchi Ensemble and involved in promoting the projects Suoni dAutore and The Soul of Guarneri.

THE VIOLIN ANDREA GUARNERI 1694This violin was built in 1694 by Andrea Guarneri, founder of the famous luthier family in Cremona that brought to life approximately 250 instruments between 1641 and 1698. A very rare specimen that survived until our times, it shows the considerable experience the cremonese luthier developed during his period of attendance with the Amati family, in particular in the bottega of Nicola, the best known thanks to his unquestioned skills. Andrea Guarneri maintained a link to his maestros school, especially in the shape of the F-holes, the arching and the paints chromatic effects. The violin, still original in all its parts, was restored in order to allow its use in concerts, by carrying out light interventions on the soundboard, ribs, and neck. The oil-based paint is still present with all its glorious yellow-gold hues, typical of the traditional recipe.

During FuoriSalone 2017 the magazine INTERNI presents the Exhibition-Event INTERNI MATERIAL IMMATERIAL, in Milan, from 3 to 15 April.

INTERNI MATERIAL IMMATERIAL brings together a series of experimental and interactive installations of architecture and design, based on the collaboration between internationally acclaimed designers and outstanding companies, as well as startups and institutions.

Having reached the major milestone of 20 iterations this year, the Exhibition-Event of INTERNI takes place in three different urban locations: Universit degli Studi di Milano (originally Ca Granda, 16th century), Orto Botanico di Brera (18th century), and the Audi City Lab at Corso Venezia 11.

MATERIAL IMMATERIAL, the theme chosen by INTERNI, is an invitation to explore the dual spirit of design: on the one hand, the universe of materials, the physical, concrete essence of design; on the other, the immaterial dimension of creation, starting with the thinking of designers, increasingly aided by digital technologies and influenced by virtual reality.

The installations are by studios and designers of various origin Japan, China, Russia, Brazil, Denmark, USA, Poland, Great Britain as well as prestigious Italian personalities; they are made with the support of companies and institutions in the avant-garde, operating on global, national and local levels.

Wood, ceramics, metals, plastics and natural fibers, crafted and transformed thanks to specialized know-how and cutting-edge technologies, give form to the visions of designers, as they suggest perspectives on the areas of research for the near future: urban growth, the dynamics of global logistics, the pervasive presence of digital media, the management of immaterial data, but also research on objects and the values of beauty, new interpretations of convivial experience, the communicative power of light.

Audi City Lab at Corso Venezia 11 offers an original interpretation of the MATERIAL IMMATERIAL theme with the program Future Needs Stories: in the spaces of the former Archiepiscopal Seminary, there will be encounters on the theme of the relationship between human beings and artificial intelligences, with the presentation of Sonic Pendulum

UNIVERSIT DEGLI STUDI DI MILANO via Festa del Perdono 7 3-15 April 2017

    LUNIVERSIT DEGLI STUDI DI MILANO

Founded in 1924, the Universit degli Studi of Milan is one of the largest universities in Italy, and one of the youngest, though based on a merger of institutions with over two centuries of history. It is the University of Northern Italy with the widest range of scientific-disciplinary sectors: 130 first and second level programs, 31 doctoral courses and 63 schools of specialization. There are about 63,000 registered students. It is one of the leading Italian universities for scientific productivity according to the rankings of Shanghai, Taiwan and Leiden, and the only Italian university to be part of LERU (League of European Research Universities).

The venerable Ospedale dei Poveri (Paupers Hospital), known as Ca Granda, now the headquarters of the State University, is one of the most important architectural complexes in Milan, in historical and artistic terms. Commissioned by Francesco Sforza as a health care facility for the poor, its construction began in the mid-1400s, based on a design by the Tuscan architect Antonio Averlino, known as Filarete (1400-1469). The project, which Filarete descrbes in his Treatise on Architecture, called for the construction of two quads separated by a large central courtyard, bordered by two-story porticoes on four sides. Two-story porticoes were also made in the four smaller courtyards into which each quad was subdivided. The project of the complex (43,000 m2 of space) was done in phases, relying on bequests and donations, but above all on the popular contribution of a special Jubilee known as the Festa del Perdono celebrated on 25 March of each odd-numbered year.

The first phase of the construction, supervised by Filarete (the ground floor) until his death in 1469, continued under the supervision of the Milanese architect Guiniforte Solari (second floor) and then with Giovanni Antonio Amadeo. The second phase of the work began in 1624. The construction of the central courtyard based on Filaretes design was completed by Giovanni Battista Pessina, immediately joined by Francesco Maria Richini, Fabio Mangone and Giovanni Battista Crespi. The Baroque facade and the church of the Annunciata were then built. Richini repeated, on the facade along Via Festa del Perdono, the double lancet windows, placing stone decorations made by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo in the interiors, belonging to the wing of the portico demolished to create the new large courtyard. The third phase, covering the period from 1797 to 1804, included the construction of the three courtyards inside the second quad and the completion of the vast facade towards the left. In 1939 the health care functions were shifted to the pavilions of the Policlinico and the Niguarda Hospital, and the Ca Granda became the location of the Rectorate of the State University. The left wing (end of the 1700s) has a neoclassical design. The facade (283 meters) is divided into three volumes that lead to the two lateral quads and the court of honor placed in between. The central courtyard is crowned by a quadriporticus topped by a loggia. In the right wing the four small courtyards of the construction of Filarete have been restored for some time. The first, completed by Solari in 1467 and originally known as della spezieria, is a quadriporticus topped by a loggia supported by elegant marble columns. Next comes a second courtyard, known as dei Bagni delle donne (1473), and a third small court known as della Giazzeria (Ghiacciaia) (1468). The last of the four small courtyards is called della Legnaia. The present condition is the result of the extensive restoration work that began in 1953, based on a project by the architects Piero Portaluppi and Liliana Grassi.

The title of the installation is a pangram, or a plausibly meaningful phrase that contains all the letters of the alphabet. It becomes the pretext for the Danish studio BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group to intervene in a light, non-aggressive way in the Loggiato Est, significantly transforming its perception. The phrase, taken out of context and inserted in a historic work of architecture, takes on a surreal and intriguing tone. The pangram is like a presence of light in space, whose ethereal character forms a contrast with the material substance of the historic building. The installation makes use of Alphabet of Light, a system of lights designed by BIG for Artemide. It is a language of light that with just two pieces permits creation of all the letters of the alphabet in a new font. For this project, BIG had two sources of inspiration from Denmark: the so-called systematic creativity of Lego, combining logic and fantasy, and the additive theory of the additive theory of the architect Jrn Utzon, who built a wide range of different works using just a few formal elements.

A wooden staircase that connects the Cortile dOnore to the Loggiato Ovest brings out the extraordinary proportions of the cloister of Ca Granda. The functional concreteness and materic presence of wood are juxtaposed with the immateriality of the classical rules of architecture that attempt to define, through mathematical and geometric formulae, the universal concepts of harmony and beauty. The magnificent courtyard, however, lacks an equally grand staircase. With Lo Scalone, produced for Ferragamo Parfums with construction by Moretti Costruzioni using salvaged wood to be recycled in upcoming works, Michele De Lucchi inserts an imposing structure suitable for the proportions of the place. the staircase, which includes a balcony-stage and also functions as stands for seating, becomes a space of socializing and reflection. An open piazza: a symbolic place of Italian culture and lifestyle. Precisely the lifestyle that talented young photographers have captured in the images for the international contest Scent of Life Talent Awards, promoted by Ferragamo Parfums for the launch of the new fragrance Uomo Salvatore Ferragamo; the ten finalist shots are on display in the Loggiato Ovest (seating by Riva 1920; lightboxes by Ecorime and carpets by G.T. Design).

A minimum gesture, but on a large scale, brings out the extraordinary quality of the Renaissance proportions of the courtyard and gives the space an imaginative dimension. Augmented Surface by the studio Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel presents the porcelain stoneware of Marazzi, a product with an innovative surface treatment prepared for the occasion. Through a theatrical device of mirrored wings, the courtyard seems to be doubled to form two settings, though half of it has not been altered. This optical illusion constructs a perfectly symmetrical architectural interior decorated by the visual and chromatic richness of the stoneware sheets placed on the wall of the portico and on the ground. Augmented Surface is composed of mirror panels with a height of six meters and stoneware sheets, with a source of lighting from below. The stoneware, in the 150x75cm format, has been printed sheet by sheet to obtain the final image, like a large mosaic. Besides the research to achieve the desired surface effects, the challenge for the architects and Marazzi was to produce hundreds of different sheets starting with hundreds of print files. Augmented Surface celebrates the material essence and performance of porcelain stoneware, which is easy to manipulate, for creative surface finishes, with qualities no other engineered material is able to reproduce.

For the architects Sergei Tchoban, Sergey Kuznetsov and Agniya Sterligova, the plan of a city and the shapes of its buildings represent the essence, the DNA of a place. This is the idea behind City DNA, an installation composed of four sectors with LED screens and mirror surfaces placed at 90 degrees, developed with Velko Group. Aerial views of cities and images of details like windows or rooftops, from the large to the small scale, alternate on the screens in the four sectors, with different visual effects and rhythms. Each of the four walls has an independent electronic control system. In a fraction of a second, a fragment of city is transformed into a blurred pattern that becomes abstract, though conserving the material characteristics of the place. It is in this passage from clarity to blur, on the fragile boundary between physical presence and abstraction, that the architects find the DNA molecule through which every city, neighborhood or individual house is encrypted. The technologies that produce satellite images, maps and photographic surveys of architecture are placed at the service of a work that proposes a new analytical and conceptual visualization of the modern metropolis.

Massimo Iosa Ghini approaches the ancient theme of the dualism between material and immaterial with an installation made of ceramics and light. The former, as earth shaped by fire, is the paradigm of materiality; the latter is the symbol of impalpable thought. The passage from matter to light is expressed by the juxtaposition between the abstract beauty of light and the earthy and concrete essence of pottery. In the dualism of light and matter lies the genesis of all creation. The installation I-M-Material is composed of a large octagon that can be walked through, with a reflecting support on which to hang ceramic sheets from the new collections of Ceramiche Cerdisa, that establish a relationship with the context of the Cortile dei Bagni. The historical site archaic, settled, layered is an integral part of the tension between opposites: it represents the past, the ruin, as opposed to the present, freshly worked materials. The ceramics are the new, the result of technology, but at the same time they share the DNA of the ruins on which they stand. The sheets come alive with the movement of visitors, while the light enhances the materic qualities, contributing to make this small work of architecture new and immaterial.

The exhibition Matrix sets out to explore human existence in the information age, together with the role of design. From the macroscopic plane to the microcosmic product, from conceptual design to industrial manufacturing, from the immaterial design of the information age to global ecology based on interconnection of people, design is faced with increasingly profound questions. Drawing on ancient Taoist wisdom, curator Yang Dongjiang tells us that the contrast between material and immaterial does not exist because the opposites intertwine in the cosmic force of the Tao. Out of Tao, One is born; out of One, Two; out of Two the Yin and Yang are born Three; out of Three, the entire universe. The Tao creates the universe and is the law that regulates its functioning. Matrix, then, is a journey in this generative force, identified in the act of designing and its expressive modes. The installation is composed of transport crates that form a labyrinthine space in which projects, visions, spaces and forms of Chinese design are revealed, conveying the foremost method of critical analysis of reality.

The installation by Benedetta Tagliabue-EMBT seeks to question the validity of the current relationship between wood consumption and fashion. In other words, how the cultural dimension on tangible choices regarding material production and environmental impact. The work is composed of a series of precise interventions on the portals of the hall of the Aula Magna that enclose reflecting surfaces, hidden seats, benches and tables to push, pull and adjust, inviting discovery. Mirroring the way in which the statues in terracotta enliven the interior facades of the Renaissance architecture of Filarete, visitors become an integral part of this installation when they interact with it, completing the piece. The panels and fine piece of furniture, made by Benchmark, illustrate the transformation of logs and planks of wood into finely crafted objects. Too Good to Waste is made using four beautiful and overlooked American hardwood species red oak, maple, cherry and tulipwood which are rarely found in homes or furniture stores in Europe. These versatile and sustainable hardwoods are growing abundantly in the forests, making them a precious resource for the production of material, and the storage of carbon dioxide.

While it is usually man that observes the work of art, in the installation Spyre it is the sculpture that observes us, with its digital eye, spying on us, to express a personal vision of the world. Made in collaboration with illy, the work is composed of five tubular parts in Corten, with a video camera at the top to record and project images in real time, like a sort of Big Brother. Spyre is an inanimate being that comes to life and puts constructed space into a new light, staging the surveillance and tracking of people through digital technologies. The installation changes its perspective with respect to the architectural context, while the form suggests free interpretations. Spyre is a tribute to the materic qualities of Corten steel, and expresses the functional and aesthetic research on raw materials typical of the design of Ron Arad. After London, the installation comes to Milan to launch the collaboration of Ron Arad with illy, for which the designer has created the new cup in the illy Art Collection. With its oxidized texture and color, Spyre reflects the essence of coffee that comes from the grinding of beans without any other treatments.

Forms exist as an oscillation between material and immaterial. They reveal the physical essence of the project and the abstract dimension of the thinking of the designer. The choice of materials plays an important role in the expression of this dual nature of design. Wood, an ancient, warm, appealing material, can be reinvented in surprising ways. As in Pergola, an open garden architecture, a cheerful summer structure for shelter from the sun, a place for conversation, a stage on which to act, sing and play. The material is flooring wood, made with very new printing techniques, measurements and colors to create surfaces with different, lively decorative patterns. The installation interprets the know-how of the Chinese brand Elegant Living, a leading producer of indoor flooring. The base of Pergola is a grouping of parallelepipeds and steps of different sizes and heights, contained in a square measuring six meters on each side. The platforms are covered in different types of wood with various decorations, created for the occasion by the two architects. Aluminium tubes and crosspieces emerge from the lateral parallelepipeds, covered with plastic garlands to form the structure of a pergola.

To counter the fast pace of todays world, which disrupts our attention and brings a sense of disorientation, the New York-based studio SHoP creates a slow installation that conveys a sense of solidity, based on geological time, unfolding era after era. Wave/Cave is composed of 1670 blocks of unglazed terracotta made by NBK Keramik and arranged in an area of 55 square meters. The blocks are extruded using an exclusive production process, and cut by numerically controlled machinery in as many as 797 different shapes. The blocks are placed on three levels to form a height of 3.6 meters, and are vertically connected by 12mm steel bars. The structure has been designed in collaboration with Arup and installed by Metalsigma Tunesi, for an overall weight of 60 tons. While the exterior of Wave/Cave has a compact, regular surface, the interior protected by Cricursa glass is of surprising ornamental impact. The beauty and intricate pattern are enhanced by the lighting, developed by L&L Luce&Light and designed by PHT Lighting Design. Inserted in the blocks and pointing upward, the fixtures produce extraordinary effects of light and shadow.

An iconic and engaging installation, Reframe is an empty, almost sacred place that prompts visitors to come into contact with their own inner life, fragmented by the frenetic rhythms of the contemporary world. The installation is like a stage for the display of the flush plates by Simone Micheli for Valsir, a leader in the plumbing and heating sector. The compact but open volume welcomes people into a space on the boundary between material and immaterial. While on the outside Reframe seems pale, with decisive lines thanks to the use of modular panels of honeycomb polycarbonate, inside it reveals an experience for the senses. On the long sides, the Valsir flush plates can be touched to release sounds like those of water, strange vocals and aromas. The ceiling, floor and back wall are covered in decorative laminates with images of flowing water. Finally, walking around the totem it is possible to discover a small Dada-like installation that displays the full structure of the Valsir products.

A giant lipstick soars inside the Cortile dOnore, in an evocative off-scale game. Two lipstick caps lie on the ground like monoliths, suggesting the columns of an ancient temple. The character of the surface stands out: a studded covering, unusual in the packaging of make-up, which when reproduced on a large scale reminds us of the ashlar work on the facades of italian renaissance buildings. The London-based studio Another Space interprets the Studded Kiss lipstick of designer and tattoo artist Kat Von D, proposing an unusual, engaging experience of the brand. The sculpture forms a setting for interactive activities to create a dialogue between visitors and the installation. An experience that starts with the initial impact of the materic substance of the work, and gradually transforms into an interaction, immaterial itinerary.

The story of KAT VON D begins in the small rural town of Montemorelos in Mexico where she was born, a background she celebrates in her work, taking inspiration from the language, the traditional art and the starlets of Mexican cinema. Kat discovered her passion for drawing at a very early age. She made her first tattoo when she was 14. From that moment on she has been a tattoo artist. In 2008 Kat Von D launched her makeup collection, which starting on 8 April will be on display for the first time in Italian Sephora stores. With the most popular of all the major beauty brands on social media, Kat fully expresses her talent and passion for art in her makeup portfolio. Her vision is that of creating

product lines that live up to her very high expectations in terms of beauty, urging people to freely express themselves through this form of art. She has gained many media honors in the beauty sector, and her Studded Kiss Lipstick is undoubtedly one of her most iconic creations.
