Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time A lot was made in the last election about the two parties' differing appeals to women voters. Since the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, women have had the right to vote in every election. No candidate can afford to ignore more than half the population. Often
the press will cite certain issues as being of particular concern to women (things like health care, violence, workplace equality, food security) as opposed to topics that the media would label as of more concern to men
(defense, terrorism, banking and finance law). While legislators may find themselves attuned at one time to one part of the population, and then the
other, in the end, they must respond to all of their constituents and be concerned with the common good.
The Gospel this weekend gives us an insight into the band of believers who followed Jesus in his ministry. Luke paints a portrait of a mixed
group of followers. There were the Twelve, that is the apostles, but there were also a number of women, some of whom were influential people. We know from the letters of St. Paul that in the early church men and
women worked together to build up the kingdom of God by spreading the message of Christ. In forgiving the sinful woman in the Gospel, Jesus outlines a path to be taken in achieving the common good, a path of forgiveness and healing. These are not easy virtues to exercise in the
political world, which is often a cutthroat, winner-take-all type of endeavor. As Christians, it is our duty to influence our legislators on the issues that will promote the common good of all rather than the personal
good of some. As Luke's writings in his Gospel and in Acts of the Apostles points out, Christianity is a religion of community. In both our
private and our public lives we profess our faith in Christ and we care for our neighbor.

PLEASE REMEMBER THEM Please pray for the priests and deacons who have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully and whose anniversaries of death are this week:
June 13: Rev. Joseph N. Panavas (1993) June 15: Rev. Joseph Hagemayer (1951) Rev. Louis G. Duray (1966) June 18: Rev. Paul J. Roederer (1963)
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Three boys were arguing over whose dad was the greatest. One said, “My dad is the greatest because he is the president of the town bank.” The second boy said, “That is pretty good, but my daddy owns two grocery stores in town!“ The third boy said, “That's nothing, my dad is a preacher, and he owns hell. He came home last night and told my mom that the Church Board gave it to him!”
THE LORD IS KIND AND MERCIFUL
Blessed is the one whose fault is taken away, whose sin is covered. Blessed the man to whom the Lord imputes not guilt, in whose spirit there is no guile. R./ Lord, forgive the wrong I have done. (Ps 32:1-2)
“I have sinned against the Lord.”
“Lord, forgive the wrong I have done.”
“So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love.”
It is very safe to say that our readings today speak to us about (1) the fact that we are sinners and that (2) with the Lord, there is forgiveness.
Sorrow, contrition, repentance, these are all the hallmarks of a person who is a true believer. We realize that, when we fail to love, we hurt others by our sins.
As we make that realization, we are called to repent.
The other hallmark of a believer?
Love.
The woman in the Gospel is forgiven her sins because she has shown great love.
Let us be mindful of our sinfulness today and let us love one another as Christ calls us to love.
As we continue the Year of Mercy, I want to remind you that an additional opportunity to go to Confession is being made available to you every Tuesday afternoon from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Our parish has been designated as one of the places in the diocese to go in order to receive the indulgence for the Year of Mercy. The other places in our deanery for the indulgence and confessions are the Salvatorian Fathers in Merrillville, the Carmelite Fathers on Ridge Road (both available for confessions any time you may wish), and Holy Name Church in Cedar Lake.
FAITH ACTION: When was the last time you truly asked the Lord for forgiveness, particularly in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. At the very least, examine your conscience and make a good Act of Contrition this day. In addition, seek pardon from another whom you may have hurt.
THE BRITISH ARE COMING. THE BRITISH ARE COMING.
Or is it, The Festival is coming, the Festival is coming?! Our annual festival begins Wednesday, June 22nd and ends Sunday, June 26th. I hope that you will be able to join us for some good fun, good entertainment, and good food. Invite your families and friends. Remember, this is our major fundraiser each year.
FAREWELL RECEPTION NEXT WEEKEND On Saturday, June 18th and Sunday, June 19th, we will have a farewell reception in the school cafeteria for Fr. Ted as we wish him well in his new assignment as Administrator of St. Joseph Church in Dyer. Go to the cafeteria after Mass next weekend and take the opportunity to thank him for his past two years of service at our parish.
ANNIVERSARIES The past couple of weeks, our deacons have all celebrated the anniversaries of their ordinations to the diaconate. You may not realize it; however, our deacons are very involved in our parish life. They teach baptism preparation classes as well as
baptize our children, they visit the sick and the shut-ins, they coordinate pastoral care, they deacon at funeral Masses and do committal ceremonies at the cemeteries, they coordinate the marriage prep program or act as mentor couples, and they perform a whole host of other services as well. Congratulations on your anniversaries, Deacons Dave, Dan, Joe, and Napoleon, thank them for all that you do at our parish. Thank you, as well, to their wives for all their support of their husbands’ ministries!

Vocations Committee Have you ever wondered, “What is my purpose in life?”
The answer remains, “to praise, have reverence and serve God.” We were mandated by our Baptism to be like Jesus,
compassionate, forgiving, loving and healing toward others, particularly in time of need. Also, remember, this is the
Year of Mercy, proclaimed by our Pope.
