We’re incredibly blessed in Suffolk that thereare so many well maintained footpaths tofollow. Health, woodland, coast, arable landand river banks are all widely accessible andduring May and June you’ll see them all attheir very best.

The Maybush at Waldringfield, just a coupleof miles from Woodbridge, enjoys anenviable position perched on the banks of the Deben with stunning views along theriver. It’s a perfect spot for walkers to stop forrefreshments as food is served all day everyday so there’s no racing against the watch toensure you’re back before food service closes.Relax and enjoy your walk at your pace andthen enjoy all the Maybush has to offer asyour four legged friends are also welcome inthe bar as well as on the sunny patio.

We’ve mapped three routes; one along thebeach and then through the fields above thevillage with breath-taking views, the secondheading up-river towards Woodbridge andthe third takes in the sister pub just down theroad in Newbourne – The Fox – beforewinding its way back along the river again.

ROUTE 1 Blue RouteIf your dog likes to swim there are some lovely opportunities on this walk. The first stretch is along the little sandy beach infront of the pub so, depending on the tide, a first dip could beenjoyed here but beware; at low tide the route to the water’sedge will be muddy so you might be best keeping to the lead.Further along the path there’s a small reservoir with lovely clearwater which Darcy has often enjoyed. If you’re following thecombined map please take care to only follow the blue numbers.

ROUTE 2 Purple RouteHeading up river towards Woodbridge this is a short walk butenough to work up a thirst. On warm summer days it’s often justenough to give your dog a good leg stretch without you (andhe) over-heating. There’s some good shade too once you leavethe river bank. This loop can be easily combined with Route 1 fora neat figure of eight. If you’re following the combined mapplease take care to only follow the purple numbers.

ROUTE 3 Red RouteIf you choose to follow Route 3 please note that our printedinstructions start and end at The Fox in Newbourne so you’llneed to take this into account if starting from The Maybush andinstead dive straight in from point 8. It’s an ideal way to take inboth villages and both pubs with their individual styles andmenus but both enjoying the Deben Inns hallmark qualities.When you reach the path between points 4 and 5 take yourtime to stop and take in the view of the Deben because there’snothing quite like it. If you’re following the combined mapplease take care to only follow the red numbers.
