Spend a full day exploring Toledo! DAY 3: Tuesday, September 22, An Outing to Towering Medieval Toledo Perched high above a winding river, Toledo looms from a distance. Toledo’s historic roots run deep. Once a Roman town, it was occupied by the Christian Visigoths in the 6th century. Later, in the 8th century, Muslim armies swept across Spain, and Toledo became a thriving commercial center where Jews, Christians and Muslims peacefully co-existed. Finally, after several hundred years Catholic forces returned again, turning this city into their Christian capital. Together, we’ll take an in-depth look at Toledo’s historic cathedral, El Greco’s premier masterpiece The Count of Orgaz, and visit one of Spain's oldest and stunning synagogues, Santa Maria Blanca. The late afternoon is yours to stroll Toledo’s many cobblestone streets or visit the Alcazar. Return to Madrid for an independent dinner. Sleep in Madrid (B, L) DAY 4: Wednesday, September 23, Depart Madrid for Salamanca via Segovia

This morning we depart for Salamanca. Along the way we’ll stop at a stark and haunting royal residence, El Escorial. This palace was once home to Europe’s most powerful monarch, Philip II. After a private tour, we’ll make a short drive to the emotionally moving “Valley of the Fallen” monument created by Spain’s dictator of thirty years, General Francisco Franco. Once victorious, General Franco forced thousands to toil in this valley in order to build Spain’s largest memorial, dedicated to the soldiers killed in Spain’s bloody civil war.

Just one hour farther north is the celebrated town of Segovia. Well known for its castle, cathedral and Roman aqueduct, Segovia is well worth exploring. For lunch, you will feast on one of the region’s most celebrated dishes: roast suckling pig (vegetarian options available) before heading two hours north to Salamanca. Your guide will suggest options for your independent dinner in Salamanca. Sleep in charming Salamanca (B, L)

Spend two full days exploring Porto, a World Heritage City! DAY 5: Thursday, September 24, Salamanca, the heart of Castille This morning, with the help of a local expert, we’ll visit some of Salamanca’s most interesting sights. This elegant World Heritage town is the home of an ancient Roman bridge, towering Gothic cathedrals and a thriving university. Salamanca also boasts Spain’s most beautiful central plaza. After a morning in-depth stroll, the day is yours for an independent lunch, perhaps a siesta, and time to seek out your own Spanish treasure. This evening, let’s gather to sample some local Spanish wines and enjoy a typical Spanish custom of tapas for dinner. Sleep in Salamanca (B, D) DAY 6: Friday, September 25, It’s Harvest time in the Douro Valley Wine Region, Portugal This morning we say “adios” to Spain and “bom dia” to Portugal. Our destination, the Douro Valley, is a majestic wilderness, a Unesco World Heritage site since 2001, one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world and a surprisingly tranquil place, apart from three bustling weeks of harvest each autumn. We will spend the day exploring this scenic region, enjoying multiple wine tastings with the producers, a panoramic river cruise at Pinhão, the heart of the Port wine production region and a wine pairing lunch. Our day concludes in the town of Porto where you’ll have time to relax and stroll the colorful streets and enjoy an independent dinner. Sleep in Porto (B, L)

An evening of Fado music is included! DAY 7: Saturday, September 26, The Heart of Porto The Baixa district is the recommended location to begin a tour of Porto, as it contains many of the city’s iconic tourist attractions such as the magnificent Praça da Liberdade, the bustling shopping streets of Rua de Santa Catarina and the lively area surrounding the university. Enjoy a pleasant walking tour this morning with a local expert, followed by a group lunch, then a free afternoon for personal exploration. One lovely free time suggestion is the short boat cruise along the Douro River: ideal for a view of the city from the river, floating beneath the six bridges of Porto. Meet up again this evening for an included dinner. Sleep in Porto (B, L) DAY 8: Sunday, September 27, The City of Vila Nova de Gaia Occupying the south bank of the Douro River and the traditional home of Port wine is Vila Nova de Gaia. The scenic riverside road Cais de Gaia is a charming drive with its cafe terraces and expansive views across the river, which is lined with vast cellars, filled with the local Port. All of the major Port producers (Graham's, Sandeman, Taylor, Warre and Ferreira) are within walking distance of each other, so you’ll be treated to a tasting (or two, or three) and lunch in one of the charming local restaurants. We will return to Porto in the late afternoon where you’ll have dinner on your own. Sleep in Porto (B, L)

Discover Lisbon! DAY 9: Monday, September 28, South to Lisbon via Coimbra (A World Heritage City) After breakfast it’s a short drive to the college town of Coimbra. Many think of this as “Portugal’s Oxford University,” for inside the city center you’ll find one of Europe’s oldest universities. The town is typically packed with joyful students, spilling out of the cafes lining the streets. We’ll enjoy a tour of the fascinating historic center and lunch together before making our way to Portugal’s exciting capital city, Lisbon. Upon arrival, we’ll tour the district of Belem, famous for its outstanding monuments, one of the most prominent being the monument of the Discoveries, built in honor of Prince Henry the Navigator. We’ll also visit the beautiful Monastery of Jeronimos, Portugal’s most impressive piece of Manueline architecture. Settle into the centrally-located hotel this evening, and dine on your own. Sleep in Lisbon (B, L) DAY 10: Tuesday, September 29, Discover Lisbon! With our knowledgeable expert guide, we’ll spend the morning visiting Lisbon’s most interesting districts: the Bairro Alto, the Baixa and the Alfama. You’ll have free time for lunch and your guide will give you an excellent layout of Lisbon before setting you free to discover her charms on your own this afternoon. Meet up again this evening for an included dinner. Sleep in Lisbon (B, D) DAY 11: Wednesday, September 30, Scenic Excursion to Sintra With its rippling mountains, dewy forests thick with ferns and lichen, exotic gardens and glittering palaces, Sintra is like a page torn from a fairy tale. Its Unesco World Heritage–listed center, Sintra-Vila, is dotted with pastel-hued manors folded into luxuriant hills that roll down to the blue Atlantic. Our local expert will fill us in the history of this magical spot and make suggestions for lunch options. We’ll return to Lisbon for some down time, then reconvene for a farewell Fado dinner concert.
