WIT STUDENTS’ UNIONDear student,

We hope you are enjoying your time in WIT. Just to make things a little more enjoyable we here at the WIT Students’ Union, in conjunction with WIT Journalism Society, have put together this new publication, WIT it!.

WIT it! is a bimonthly publication which will keep you up to date on news, events, campaigns and much more. We’ll have the occasional competition thrown in for good measure too!

In this issue you will be introduced to your Students’ Union team, who will inform you on ways to make your year in college more enjoyable with useful tips on student welfare, education and house rental. You’ll also see a few photographs, which were taken at recent WITSU events – perhaps you might find yourself in there!

What/Who is the Students’ Union?

The Students’ Union is an organisation set up for, and run by, students. As a student of WIT you are automatically made a member of WITSU. Your union is made up of five sabbatical officers, three full-time and two part-time. We are here to be the voice of the student, to make your college life more enjoyable and to ensure you are being treated fairly in all issues relating to your academic, social and personal life. We need your input if we are to make a difference for you, so please call in to see us at our offices in the Courtyard, Cork Road Campus, and let your voice be heard.

CONOR DOYLEWITSU PRESIDENT

Hey WIT Students,

I would like to express a very warm welcome to all our incoming students and extend that to everyone who has made it back for another

year of college. I hope you are all looking forward to the challenging year ahead and of course, to the fun that is an essential part of

college life in the midst of all the hard work. Also, always remember, the Students’ Union is here for you, so if you have any problems, no

matter how big or small they are, we are here to help!

DENISE MCCARTHYWELFARE OFFICER

My name is Denise McCarthy and I am your Student Union welfare officer this year. For those of you I haven’t met yet, welcome to WIT and I hope you have settled in and enjoying your time here in WIT so far. As Welfare Officer I help with non academic issues by providing support, representation and raising awareness for students in relation to several issues.

I wish you all the best of luck in the upcoming year, play hard, work harder and be safe.

JAMES LAMBEEDUCATION OFFICER

Hey Everyone, My name is James Lambe

and I’ll be your Education Officer this year. I was elected last year by you to represent you. It is my job to help you with any of

your academic needs, be it registration, coursework, exams, repeats, grants or fees. Basically anything nerdy, make sure you call

to me. This year keep an eye out for our new grinds database and our second hand bookshop.

I look forward to talking to you soon!

Entertaining You!

With five weeks of our college year already having passed us by we are fast approaching our Christmas exams, and before we know it we’ll be in the middle of our end of year exams! So in between all this study madness we have lots of events organised to keep you entertained. To date, we have had a very successful Fresher’s Week; we sold over 600 tickets for the Fresher’s Ball, had a packed Dome Bar for hypnotist “The Real McCoy”, enjoyed crowning our Hunk n’ Trunks winner Mr. Tom Barry with the prestigious title of WIT Hunk of the Year; and to end the week we all raised our glasses at 17.59 in the Dome Bar to Arthur Guinness. During Know Your Union Week we held a BBQ in the Courtyard for 400 students, which was a huge success.

On an entertainments front I’m sure you’ll all agree that we have had a very successful past few weeks, but trust me when I say it’s only getting started. Coming up in the next few weeks we’ll have our Lovely Girls Competition (Wednesday, 13 October) and our annual Halloween Fancy Dress Party with J90 (Monday, 18 October), both of which will take place in the Dome Bar.

As Entertainments Officer at WITSU I will do my best, with the support of my colleagues, to make sure you enjoy your time here at WIT for the 2010/11 academic year. Keep an eye on the WITSU Ents Facebook page for updates on all events taking place and make sure you keep an eye out for the second edition of WIT IT!

Until the next edition….happy reading,

We Talk, But We Also Listen!

Believe it or not, all students play a part in the Union! We need you to give us feedback on anything that we do or

anything that goes on in the college. We need to establish a strong communication system between the Union and the Student Body. We welcome all feedback,

this means any criticism to let us know what we’re doing wrong and especially the odd compliment to let us know when

we’re doing something right. You can contact us in many ways. All the Union contact information is located on the

contents page of this magazine. Or simply call into your local SU shop or office.

PETER FEENEYENTERTAINMENTS OFFICER

Hi All! As the title suggests I am responsible for the running and co-ordinating of all

Students’ Union entertainment events here in at WIT. These events include Fresher’s Week, Raise And Give Week, WIT Fight

Night, WIT Fashion Show and other big events throughout the year. I will also assist your class reps to organise your class

parties and class trips. All events throughout the year will be advertised well in advance on the WITSU Ents Facebook page and also on www.witsu.ie/ents, so

check them out regularly for updates.

EAMONN KELLYCOMMUNICATION OFFICER

Hi Everyone! My name is Eamonn and I’m

your Communications Officer here in the Students’ Union. Im here to make sure you know who the Students’ Union are and what

we’re doing. This involves doing all the SU posters and publications, like this one. Alot has changed this year in the SU and we’re all

Welfare & EducationI Cant Seem to Settle InIf you think back to your first day in secondary school I’m sure you will remember feeling like you would never get used to it and would hate it forever. It will take time to settle in so just keep this in mind and give college a chance; it will be worth it I promise.

I Am Terrible With MoneyAs I said starting college is a massive change in your lifestyle and some people may seem to be adapting to this better than others. Everyone will be finding it hard but some will just find it easier to cope than others. If you are having difficulty settling in there are schemes in place to help you so just give us a shout in the students union office and we’ll be able to point you in the right direction.

Everyone Else Seems to Be Loving College But I’m NotI n t h e s t u d e n t s u n i o n handbook there is a section on how to budget your money so that you can match up what your income and expenditure will be. You can also call into your local SU office and get some advice on setting up a budget and managing your money.

I Have No MoneyGoing to college can be a very expensive time in your life, especially for the first few weeks where you have to pay out the registration fee, a deposit, rent and books. We have a jobs l ist in the students union if you want to get a part time job. There are also funds and structures there to lend a helping hand to s tudents in ser ious financial trouble. Again just give a call into the students union and we’ll be able point you in the right direction

I Can’t CookDon’t worry, there is even a section in WIT IT every month with a simple recipe and there will be a section on the new students’ union website with a collection of easy dinners to cook. Be sure to eat a balanced diet and do regular exercise, walk or even cycle to college. Have you seen our bike shop?

Work in Progress...I would like to express a very warm welcome to all our incoming students and extend that to everyone who has made it back for another year of college. I hope you are all looking forward to the challenging year ahead and, of course, to the fun that is an essential part of college life in the midst of all the hard work.

My role as President of the Students' Union is to oversee the overall day to day running of the Union. My aim, for the 2010/11 academic year, is to put in place a Union with proper structures, so that at the end of my tenure the Union will be seen as a professional organisation that has assisted the students of this college to the best of its ability. Having been previously elected as a sabbatical officer for two years running, I have a very good idea of what it is the students of WIT want from their Union and I will work together with you to achieve our goals. I hope you all enjoyed Fresher’s Week. All of our events were very well attended. The behaviour of the vast majority of WIT students was excellent, however, a small minority’s actions were totally unacceptable and they will be dealt

with by WIT College Authorities and the Gardaí.

The big battle that students in third level education are going to encounter in the government budget is the possible threat of a cut in the maintenance grant and also an increase in registration fees. I, as your SU President, will fight these threats tooth and nail with government ministers. By the time this publication goes to print I hope to have met with these ministers and I will report back to you on any important outcomes. We will be having a rally on Wednesday, 20 October, in Waterford and we will also organise bringing students to Dublin for a National Protest against these possible cutbacks to third level students.

Class reps are the backbone of the student movement, so when you are electing your class rep it is vital that the person you select has a strong voice, as they will by your voice. Class rep training is on Tuesday, 5 October 2010.

An area in which I promised to assist with in my election manifesto was the car parking situation in WIT. The first step that I have taken is to introduce the SU Bike Shop. We are selling great bicycles at cost price. Please see page 15 of this edition for more information. Get active, get cycling and let the parking problems be a thing of the past. I am also lobbying with the college management team for more bicycle shelters, along with discussing other travel management plans.

The new recreational room in College Street should be completed within the next couple of weeks and I hope it will be to your liking.

If you have any issues, questions, concerns or just want a chat, please come into the Students' Union Office. I promise to ensure that the sabbatical team will do everything that they can to assist you. My office door is always open for you. All casework dealt with by the sabbatical officers is done so in a confidential manner. Remember, you have elected us, and we are here to serve and represent you. You are our number one priority.

EDUCATIONI’m James Lambe, YOUR Education Officer. I’m here to help you with any education related problem you may have. All casework will be treated in the strictest confidence and if I can't help you, I'll find the person who can.

I deal with various types of casework. Students will always have problems related to their course and it is my job to help you sort them out. I sit on various committees where I air the views of the student body and fight for your best interests. This year I hope to run some of the first Education Campaigns in WIT so look out for our Take Control of Your Future Week and our Wireless Campaign.

I wanted to do this job because I felt I could add a lot to education support in WIT. So far I have been recruiting grinds tutors from across the county for our new Grinds Database, which will be available on our new website when it is launched in October. Unfortunately our previous database of people who were willing and able to give grinds was quite small and thus many people were left to help themselves and struggle on with their studies. Our new database will be larger more accessible.

I have also been recruiting as many second-hand college books as I can in order to set up WITSU Second Hand Bookshop. We hope you use these services throughout the year to make them a success. You can make a little money by selling your old college books and save a little money when you want to buy them. By the way if you are looking to sell books just call into your local SU and simply fill out a seller’s form.

I am also responsible for the class rep system. Class Reps are a vital part of college life. Your Class Representative is the spokesperson for your class and is the first point of contact between you and college authorities. The Class Reps are collectively responsible for deciding the policy of the Students’ Union. I have been recruiting all class reps by calling class to class holding nominations. If I missed your class I’m sorry but make sure to call into your local SU to find out more. Class Rep Training is on Tuesday, 5 October. Make sure your Class Rep attends and hold them accounted for Class Rep Council every month.

I look forward to meeting with you throughout the 2010/11 academic year. And don’t forget – I’m here to assist you.

11

WELFARESince the academic year started, we have seen the start of Condom Wednesdays, where WITSU, with the help of three Super Sperm, hand out 1200 FREE Durex condoms in both College Street and Cork Road campus’ every Wednesday.

As part of the role of Welfare Officer I have been working on various casework items relating to finance, accommodation, general well being of students and relationship support. All casework is done with the utmost confidentiality and without bias so feel free to call into me no matter what the problem is.

On the 13th September I ran my first campaign, RESPECT, where the main aim was to encourage students to respect – yourself, our community, WIT (staff, lecturers, classmates) and diversity (disability, international students, age, gender, sexual preferences). The local Gardaí came in to speak to some classes about antisocial behaviour, we had display stands with graphic posters and literature and a very helpful student dressed up as “Ali G” and ran around asking for respect and handed out ‘Don’t be a fool’ flyers.

I have introduced an Emergency Student Welfare Fund which will assist students who find themselves in financial difficulty due to unforeseen circumstances during the academic year. This fund will be funded by WIT Students’ Union, Campus Services and some fundraisers we are planning for the year.

I am also starting a pilot scheme in WIT where the Samaritans will choose twenty WIT students to be trained by them to be active student listeners in the college and may be there for a friend or a classmate, who is either, feeling down, wants a chat or has no one else to go to. This scheme has not been tried in any other college yet and I am delighted to say that WIT will be the pilot college.

September 20th – 24th, we saw the Fresher’s Ball which was a sold out event, on Tuesday, the real McCoy came to the Dome Bar where students climbed on each other to see the lucky dozen who had to do some hilarious tasks. Wednesday was a highlight for me as the WITSU team and I organised Hunks N Trunks where we raised money for the Emergency Welfare Fund and saw six fine young men strut their stuff and much more. Thursday was Arthur’s day with music in the Dome, what more can I say.

There are many campaigns and events to come during the year, the next campaign is ‘Love your Body’ week (October) where we will emphasise men and women’s health with some themed days and some visitors on campus.
