REACHING MORE CHILDREN

PAUL KRUEGERPresident and CEO

The Make-A-Wish® South Dakota Board of Directors and staff worked collaboratively to develop a three year strategic plan, which was approved in March. In creating the plan, we reached out to our volunteers, donors and most importantly, wish families, to get your feedback. Your advice, our own vision for our chapter, along with our experience and direction from Make-A-Wish® America, shaped our plan. Our main focus over the next few years and beyond is to reach more children. Our four strategic priorities are:

1. Mission – to increase the number of wishes from the historical average of 57 per year (baseline average 2010 to 2014) to 65 per year (target average from 2015 to 2017) while maintaining wish quality and turnaround time.

2. Public Awareness – increase public awareness of Make-A-Wish South Dakota to target audiences with a goal to create a better understanding of our mission, the referral process and the impact of wishes.

3. Funding Sustainability – continue to run successful events while diversifying funding sources and better engaging event donors.

4. Organizational Effectiveness – increase the organizational effectiveness in order to facilitate the core mission.

We look forward to sharing more with you in the coming months. Most importantly, we ask for your continued support and commitment. The grassroots efforts of Make-A-Wish are one of the key elements that makes our organization so unique. To reach more kids, we need to better educate the public in all corners of our state about how kids are referred and who qualifies. We need to better engage our wish families and develop stronger relationships with referral sources. Our mission is powerful and the hope, strength and joy each wish provides is immeasurable and essential to kids facing life-threatening medical conditions. Join us as we boldly work toward achieving our vision of granting every eligible child’s wish.

Finally, summer is upon us! There are many events to benefit Make-A-Wish over the next few months, including the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Hot Harley Nights and our 15th Annual Make-A-Wish South Dakota Golf Tournament. Please see the calendar on page 20 or online at southdakota.wish.org.

Thank you for all that you do to help us make wishes come true!

NANCY WAHLSTROMChair, Board of Directors

Wish Perspective

There are no words that can be said to express the feelings we are left with after my daughter’s experience with Make-A-Wish! They made Madyson feel like the most special little girl through this entire journey and that is something she will never forget and that I will be forever thankful for!

In Madyson’s short 10 years of life she’s already had to deal with more things than anyone should have to deal with in their entire lifetime. Her Daddy Branden died in 2011 when she was only six. He had two aortic dissections within four months. The second one caused his already tired body to fail and he had a massive stroke which took his life at just 32 years of age. His father also succumbed to aortic dissection at age 39. Due to the strong family history, I took both of my daughters in for genetic testing. They took part of Branden’s aorta and both Kaylee and Madyson’s blood and ran a DNA test. Sadly, Madyson’s was an exact match to her father, a mutilated gene called MYH11. Since the diagnosis, I take her to the cardiologist every year to get scans done and she also takes medicine daily to help her heart pump slower. She’s already had heart surgery and many other procedures. We don’t know when she will have an aortic dissection, but we live life to the fullest every day and love her more than we ever thought possible.

I know how serious her condition is but when her cardiologist asked me if he could refer her to Make-A-Wish, I lost it! On the surface she looks and acts like a normal little girl, but underneath we have no idea when the “bomb” is going to go off. I had no idea she would even qualify to get a wish because I have always thought Make-A-Wish was for terminal children, but it’s not; it’s also for kids with life-threatening conditions like Madyson.

Once she was referred and approved, we were getting very excited for the trip of a lifetime! Her wish was to go to Walt Disney World and to meet Elsa from the movie “Frozen”. We spent months looking up all the rides and different things we were going to be doing and we couldn’t wait to go!

The week of our trip was beyond amazing. It made us forget about doctors, tests and what the future holds. We had many laughs, tears of joy, and heartwarming, emotional moments, but most of all we had a blast!!! This trip gave us new hope and a new fight for life. Again, thank you Make-A-Wish and the wonderful people who adopted Madyson’s wish, Angels With A Dream. We will be forever grateful!!

Sincerely, Mindy Bloom and Family, Sioux Falls 1

WISH ASSISTSFrom time to time we assist other chapters in granting wishes. The home chapter reimburses us for all expenses.

Make-A-Wish® South Dakota wishes to thank the following chapters for their assistance in making wishes come true for our kids.

Participation in Kids For Wish Kids® will bring Make-A-Wish South Dakota one step closer to the goal of fulfilling wishes for every child with a life-threatening medical condition. Kids For Wish Kids puts kids in charge. They take the lead to brainstorm fundraising ideas, develop plans of action and then watch their ideas come to life. Kids across South Dakota raise money through their schools, teams, churches, organizations, or on their own, all to help make wishes come true for other kids. We are grateful to the following groups and individuals who have participated in recent months.

Name: Matt & Sara Odden

Hometown: Matt - Ree Heights, Sara - Pierre

About you: Matt: District conservationist for USDA-NRCS, member of the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee and involved with 4-HSara: Civil engineer for City of Rapid City

The Oddens enjoy hunting, fishing, running, snow skiing and outdoor activities. They have two children, Noah (5) and Audrey (20 months) and a 9-year-old Aeridale Terrier named Brandy.

Your connection with Make-A-Wish? In college, Sara became involved with Make-A-Wish through the Chi Omega women’s fraternity at SDSU, of which she was a member.

What made you want to start volunteering for Make-A-Wish? Matt: I volunteered with Sara at several events and decided to become an official volunteer. Sara: As the SDSU Chi Omega chapter president, I was able to attend a national convention at which a local California chapter delivered the news to a wish child that her wish to meet Cinderella was going to come true. Seeing the expression on her face when she realized what was happening was something that I will never forget.

How long have you been volunteers? Matt: Since 2012. Sara: Since 2005.

Why do you volunteer for Make-A-Wish? We volunteer because we have a passion for bringing joy to children and their families at dull times in life.

What is the best part of being involved with Make-A-Wish? Being rewarded for time spent with smiles, hugs, laughter and the remarkable high that comes from having made a difference in the life of a child.

Tell us about a memorable wish experience: Matt: During a recent shopping excursion- watching a wish child’s excitement as he explored the store and debated the tough decisions of which video games he wanted to take home. Sara: At an airport pickup of a wish child and family I had met with for the wish planning, an almost 18 year old young man gave me a giant hug and sincerely thanked me for helping make his wish come true.

What would your one true wish be?

Matt: To go to Hawaii as a family and go parasailing. Sara: To travel to Rome to see the Colosseum and other ancient ruins that I spent three years of high school Latin Class learning about.

For more information about volunteer opportunities in your area, please contact Kerry Pollema, volunteer and outreach director, at 605.335.8000 or [email protected].
